TRUCKING CALCULATOR: truckercalculator.com
Question 1: Should you get into trucking?
Question 2: If you are in trucking, is it time to get out?
These are the two questions I will try to help you answer today. Everyone is different, everyone's operations are different, and I hope this video will give you clarity on whether its a good time to get into the trucking industry, whether you should change from an OO to a company driver, or whether you should leave this industry for now.
Thank you Denis from Alvil for being the inspiration for this video! / @alviltruckinginc

Paid off equipment, able to do minor repairs, only way you will be able to keep from stressing and losing it. I sit a lot because I refuse to run those insulting rates, and when I do go out with a good paying load, I take short ones towards the house.
@Joe-qv6jh
@Joe-qv6jh 12 күн бұрын
Yes, if the load don't pay enough to dead head back to the house and still make money, then don't take it. Today, you must make ALL the money on the outgoing load from your house, or you'll burn your profits chasing pennies after you drop. At the drop, never hang out for more than 48 hours looking for a decent return load, or your eating up your profits in living on the road costs. If you can get a return load to pay fuel and it gets you close to home , take it. Set the cruise at 55 and tea total your way back. If not, set the cruise at 55 and head for the house while scanning for loads in your route.

@@truckerwayne Yup, you aint the fool. Absolutly the least stressfull way to roll today. I am many years into retirment now but I still get load rates in my emails , and keep an eye on a few load boards and these yu tube channels just to see whats happening, and maybe offer a little advice where it might help someone. I had a great time with trucking and made real money with heavy haul. One pretty 500 hp 18 speed rig, only me behind the wheel, my friend/ secretary/ banker, taking care of the paper work, a good accountant telling me every quarter if I needed to be spending more or spending less, a damn good mechanic who I let use my shop, rent free, to run his business out of, in trade for keeping my rig in tip-top,shape, plus paying him $35 an hour for any major repair or rebuilding work. I kept a tablet on the dash, and no matter if it was a burnt light in the dash, or a noise, or a squeak here or there, I wrote it down as it happened, then gave him the list when I got back , and my rig was well maintained , and back to perfect when I rolled out again. It was a win-win for everyone. I still miss driving that first class set-up. Getting to run s great truck to the four corners of the country and some of Canada, and pulling onto the fuel islands owning (free and clear), something a man can be proud of was pure entertainment all by itself. It never goes out of my thoughts.

I am 80 years old and purchased my first truck 60 years ago and have always owed trucks. All of my equipment is paid for and well maintained. But old customers are going away and spot loads are a disaster. I sold off about half of my fleet last year and prices were terrible at Ritchie Bros. Auction. I look at the RB Auctions results occasionally and it looks like it is till a bloodbath. I have seen downturns before. Two oil embargoes in the 1970's triggered crazy inflation. In 1980 prime rate was at 20% and that was the same year that trucking was deregulated. But I made money through all of these times. I always had a nitch that made money. I transport bulk commodities and they are not quite as volatile as dry boxes, but it is getting tighter all the time. If it wasn't that I have other income, and that trucks have always been my life, I would have sold everything a couple of years ago. I was a director and on the loan committee of a bank for many years. Back in my day, I would have never approved loans with practically nothing down and paying crazy prices for equipment. I hate to be a preacher of doom and gloom, but until all the carriers that are under water or hanging on a thread go away, I don't see things getting better. I'm afraid a lot of trucks were purchased by people who are clueless that they just can't walk away from an under water truck. I put a lot of blame on lenders that allowed people to get in way over their heads. By the time I got into banking, I had been running trucks for 15 years and had survived the 1970's. And I turned down a lot of loans that I could see a train wreck coming. Even though equipment is very cheap now, I wouldn't recommend anyone to get into the business right now. If you are losing money, cut your loses. I was a 20 year old kid when I bought my first truck and I was optimistic. Possibly being 80 years old changes that optimism.

@@TheDudeChronicles If you have a solid profitable contract lined up with someone you really know, you can do ok. If not, you are going to go into debt to buy a job, not a business. With current rates, if you have to rely only on load boards ,your are going to see at tax time, that you have a low paying job (if you are profitable to pay yourself wages ). This is a terrible time in history to go into trucking. Once your equipment is dot road ready, you still need $30 grand cash up front to get legit with your own 48 state authority, and still have a little operating capital. I hear of guys paying $24 grand a year in the required insurance policy's. If you own your equipment outright , you're still not making sustainable yearly income because you're not loaded enough over give away rated loads that you must refuse to pull or you'll go bankrupt over rolling maintenance and fuel. If ya just have your heart set in driving a truck, then (at this time), I strongly advise you to find a company to drive for. All aspects of truck loads are 95% depressed in both availability and survival only profit margins. Why take on debt to bet on a lame horse ? I sold out and retired from my heavy haul operation in 2013 because of this same no money environment. I was a bought and paid for, one rig, 7 axle gig with me driving and a good mechanic who came to my shop when I needed him. After 2008, trucking started sliding down. I've been watching load rates ever since. Other than dealing with the COVID thing, rates have only gone down since I got out, and costs have only gone up. The woman in the video knows what she's talking about. She gives you all you need to know that trucking is about the last to enter today.

As much as we all need loads, I think that it is time all truckers need to stop accepting low rates. We are leased on to a small carrier, yesterday I refused a load paying $1000. To take a 44000 lbs load from Longview WA to Carson CA. It's over 1100 miles. Our dispatch wanted me to do it just to get back to CA for a better paying load that would average out. I refused and went Bobtail 750 miles in protest to such a low rate. Thankfully, we don't have a truck payment. What do you think about me refusing the load? I like your channel. 😢

If you are trucking as O/O, here is your simple deciding factor . If it has come to the point that you can no longer easily afford to have your rig washed once a week at a commercial truck wash, and you cant afford to have all of your aluminum wheels and tanks polished once a month at a commercial polish shop, then you have an unsuccessful business, and it's time to execute your exit from the industry. Things are tight and going to get tighter. The usa and European economy's are dying a slow and painful death, and western sanctions snd borrowed war bucks have put "BRICS" in a position to sink the dollar and Euro currency's into zero global value. This is not the bottom. Even if Trump, and a full Trump Congress gets in, it will be two years mininum to see (IF) anything gets better in trucking volume and rates. Migrants are being hired by the big carriers which is driving down their costs and rate bid drops will follow until all O/O, and big carrier competitors are pushed out ! These are the brutally, hard, cold facts ! Push everyone you can find to Vote in november. YOUR country's future is on the line !!!.

Lots of reasons to get in and out. Generally speaking if you dont know if you should get into trucking that is a sign that you should not. If you can't do your own math to figure out your operating expenses also a sign. That being said maybe you want to lose your house and go bankrupt because you never have. That is a good reason to get into trucking. Great learning opportunity.

I would only add that after market warranties on a used vehicle are trouble. In my experience they are incredibly slow to reimburse for covered repairs and play a waiting game knowing that you lose money the longer it takes for them to process a claim. Many drivers simply pay the repair to get back on the road more quickly realizing in the end that saves them money. if given the option again I would not have spent $25,000 on a warranty that I feel is practically useless.

I’m a company fuel driver. 2 companies here in Colorado recently closed the doors. First one, kinda had it coming. Young Indian owner, with a bunch of very young Hispanic drivers. They had a couple of bad accidents recently, so DOT shut them down. (Extreme Petroleum ) 30-50 trucks. The other, a small mom & pop with 4 or 5 trucks. One of their big customers Kum &Go was acquired by Maverick. Maverick staffed up, & got more drivers. So the small company owner wasn’t getting any loads, & decided to close the doors & sell everything. His wife drove, and I worked with her at another company before Covid. I am 100% independent owner operator, spent 35k on repairs and maintenance back in 23 + 10k on credit card mostly replacing tires on truck and trailer. My 2016 Volvo had 622k when I bought it. Today it has 868k and runs okay. Still paying 1,226 monthly for another few months, plus insurance 200pm. Planing to continue using it until I exit late 2025. If something going to happen to a transmission, I’ll replaced it with used one for around 6k. That’s it. The only thing I don’t like is that d13 consumes around 6.5mpg (unlike never once with 8mpg on average). 8pmg could save me 25k in 2023, that 2/3 of my repair expenses.

Love the hard numbers and facts. Its honest and refreshing. Most people interacting with this industry BS us and tell us what we want to hear. Its annoying af and disrespectful as if we're too stupid to not recognize when someone is completely vomiting word garbage. "ai trucks will help the driver shortage." "Theres a driver shortage." "These new laws are for safety." "It will only be an hour." (4hrs later) Thanks for the info TMS

Thank you very much for the content, much appreciated. I'm currently running 2 trucks as an investor under 2 different carriers by hiring drivers. So far i'm not happy with the earnings. One carrier can do rpm of 2 USD while other performing worse, therefore lowering my total income. What would you recommend to investors (not owner operators) while choosing a carrier for such operation like mine?

Clearinghouse Status and CDL Downgrades As established in the first Clearinghouse final rule, drivers with a "prohibited" Clearinghouse status are prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) on public roads. The second Clearinghouse final rule (Clearinghouse-ll) further supports this by ensuring that drivers with a "prohibited" Clearinghouse status do not continue to hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) or commercial learner's permit (CLP). Beginning November 18, 2024, State Driver Licensing Agencies (SDLAs) will be required to remove the commercial driving privileges from the driver's license of an individual subject to the CMV driving prohibition. This would result in a downgrade of the license until the driver completes the return-to-duty (RTD) process. Note: SDLAs with legislative authority currently have the option to voluntarily query the Clearinghouse and downgrade CDLs for prohibited drivers and may do so before the November 18, 2024 compliance date. Learn more about the second Clearinghouse final rule

I can't think of one single reason where I would advise anyone to get into trucking right now unless they just have a pile of cash they want to get rid of. I have one truck of my own with a reefer trailer. I hire someone to drive it. It has been parked since last August. I'm also a broker and have been doing that for almost 30 years. I'm starving to death with that right now too. If you are pulling $2 per mile freight do the industry a favor and just quit, you will be out soon enough anyway.

A few things that weren’t mentioned. Your payed vacation and holidays are gone when you are an OO. Your social security tax is double when you are an OO. Your health insurance is going to be another $800/ mo. Figure out how much you need to take home and find a good company that will give you that amount and weekends off. I think we are making this harder than it should probably be

A company called Aurora is almost done testing their autonomous semi trucks. They plan on having tens of thousands in operation in 3-4 years. They say the trucks will run 24/7 and lower shipping cost for companys. That sounds like the end for is drivers. Should we start transitioning into a different industry?

When you say your old truck cost so much. I have to ask you what year was your old truck. I'm betting that was DEF truck! And my next question is what speed were your drivers driving at. Don't get me wrong on this question i drive the max speed limit. I have a good reason to ask this, to weight out my thoughts on why those expensive break downs took place.
