Great call drive. The average banksman/labourer has no idea of trailer length/axle configuration, same with unit, All very well waving you in from rear, but have no idea you have to take into account where cab n/s is in relation to obstacles. Had it many times where I've stopped to get out and check, with banksman raving what I'd stopped for. When shown my n/s is showing close to a bollard, picked up by my pavement mirror, they go quiet. Well done for knowing your own/your rig's limitations - THAT'S PROFESSIONAL !! 👏👍

We have an old saying as truck drivers, an inch is as good as a mile. Just remember the overhang on the turn and understand that a trailer reverses on its back axle and pivots on the front when going forward. I only drove trucks for about 30 years but I've yet to hear of any other driver refusing to take a load out because in my opinion it was loaded unsafely. The consignor then had to unload it and reload it to my suggestion and after a few hours sitting in the cafe it was ready for the late delivery to site. I've had lots of challenges with sites expecting me to reverse it down narrow lanes even into tight openings. The rules are that it is the responsibility of the consignee to organise the unloading and receipt of their goods under RHA and normal industry rules. If they request a lorry loader equipped delivery they still have to provide a safe and satisfactory area to do the unloading. You should be aware that any damage sustained or caused is the responsibility of the driver to report this however, if it's because of an instruction by the consignee then they could be liable to pay for the repairs. Bear in mind that sites should have proper insured liability for the type of work they do.

I doubt very much that any construction worker there is a HGV driver, and at the end of the day it's your call and not theirs. I worked at Pilkingtons and one of my early roles there was FLT, Bray shovel driver etc. We would fill up the large refuge containers, and then when full they would be picked up by a wagon. A few would burn out their winching tackle trying to lift the full containers onto their wagons, and my manager had to sort them out. I wasn't trained to be an external wagon driver, so wasn't aware of the wagon loads or legal road stuff. The good drivers just knew their weights and what was bad. They would wave you over and say there is too much stuff in there and can you take some out, and so we would. You couldn't go off the fill line, as it was a mixture of wood, steel, sand and general waste. I would rather have a driver know their stuff, what they can do and can't. I would have also thought (I could be wrong) that when signing up or contracting the delivery they have agreed to delivery conditions. Otherwise, I could order 10,000 bricks dropped off at my house in a single one-way street and want you to drop them off in my back garden with a ten-foot garden wall around it.

If the truck won't fit, it won't fit. If you can't straighten up in time the trailer will just go into the scaffolding. It's possible that one got round there earlier, but I'm guessing that the scaffolding wasn't there at the time. They should have just unloaded from the road anyway. I've been to a few of these building sites, and they usually don't like you driving on there unless absolutely necessary

The thing is with the "pro drivers" they can always do it. Cars parked on your side didn't help. Neither did the fact you had a lift axle unit. Up or down there are harder to take the swing off in tight situations. Regardless of the above. It was tight. I've turned up places and had the same spill. Explain, argue if needed. Or offer them the keys to do it themselves. They soon shut up. I've been driving class 1 for 20 years and if I'm not comfortable. I don't do it. Regardless of what the next big head says.
