I did exactly what you recommended and I passed on a 2008 Duramax after checking the water hose and looking for blow by and the exhaust. It was blowing white smoke from the oil cap and the water hose was hard to squeeze also. I looked for a small whole on the water reservoir tank and couldn’t find one. I looked at the tail pipe and it smelled like sulfur and had white smoke coming out of it. I then checked it with a scanner and it had a bunch of codes, specifically, it had all eight cylinders showing restrictions. When I told the used car owner that I was going to pass on the truck, he tried to talk me into it and say nothing was wrong with it. If I hadn’t looked at your video’s before I looked at it, I might have bought it and regretted it. Thanks a lot for the video, you saved me a lot of money and head aches.

FYI:: They are right and wrong about the smoke! White means your burning coolant (bad headgasket). Blue haze means your burning oil (bad rings). Black means your burning access fuel (bad injectors). The darker it is the worse it is. Hope that help someone with their diagnoses.

I know nothing about Duramax...much less any diesel truck. I would like to find something within my "old man, retired, and poor" budget to pull my 5th wheel with. I currently have a 6.0 GMC that will do the job on the flats but when into any hills, she will grunt. (the Alison trans is a good option too) I definitely need to watch more of your videos to understand what LGBTQ, LLY, BMT, XYZ, and all the other Duramax acronyms mean.

I realize this is an older video, 4 years at this point, but A LOT of great information. I just recently purchased a 2019 2500 HD L5P crew cab, and man do I love this vehicle. It is GM Certified less than 75k miles. I work on the big rigs for Kenworth, but have never personally owned a Diesel engine myself, especially not a Duramax, until now. And man, after watching a few of your videos, I’ve learned 1 thing - I’ve got A LOT to learn lol. I appreciate you, your honesty, and the time you’ve spent making these videos. Thanks bud.

Collapsed upper radiator hose most of the time is a coolant tank cap getting gummed up with crusty dexcool. Soak it in hot soapy water for a while and rinse with hot water then blow it off with some compressed air. Happend to me in my LLY and LB7 this fixed the problem. Definitely could be other problems also stated in the video but always start with the easy stuff first👍🏼

I'm not sure if you go over it later in the video but look into the duramax injector cleaning procedure with gm upper end and injector cleaner, this is the system where you disconnect the fuel system and idle off a fuel jug with cleaner and half a gallon of diesel, I did this on my lbz and it improved idle as well as eliminated black smoke at idle and full throttle.

Look under the cap. If you push hard enough, you'll understand that the cap holds the pressure relief valve. That feeds that hose right next to the cap. I guess you could find pressure lower than the limit imposed by the pressure relief valve on the coolant reservoir cap.

Everything else is the same on the air frame. It's not that much more to own a Diesel. Cheaper if you tow a lot. I bought an 05 GMC Sierra 3500, crewca long bed WT, 158k miles for 18k with the iffy aftermarket warranties. Truck was 14,999 beforehand. I checked as much as I could before I bought, excepted there to be a wee bit of work as it was used and came off a ranch. Ran great, drove great checked exhaust etc, as mentioned for color and all. After 4 months the injection pump completely took a crap. Luckily the iffy aftermarket warranty will cover it, but nothing else. So still looking at 5k out of pocket. It is my first personal Diesel, so not super stoked but staying positive.
