The REAL Reason Truck Engines Is Placed HERE
The placement of engines in vehicles has evolved over the years, leading to a variety of configurations, from front-mounted engines in standard cars to mid-mounted and rear-mounted engines in high-performance and exotic vehicles.
but on the big trucks engines have always been in the front, but why is that, what are the benefits behind, and why did the American trucks went from cab-overs to conventional long nosed ?

I'm just glad we no longer use Cabover trucks in the USA, those trucks were a nightmare,thank God for conventional trucks with tandem axles and large sleepers.

But on the other hand, America can't build a Channel Tunnel, Gotthard Base Tunnel or Fehmarn Belt fixed link without standard truck lengths. Imagine not needing a sleeper because you can just park your truck on a train in Kansas City, be carried underneath the Rocky Mountains and drive off a ramp in Sacramento a few hours later.

Well I can say from my experience with my 79 kenworth lw 924 , it has a 3408 cat , 30 ton Columbia logging rigging , when my truck was empty , with no trailer on or hooked up or off completely, it had traction issues with the big v-8 cat up front , but put a load on my lw and no traction issues at all, plus the big cat helped with great weight over my steers For them nasty switchbacks

Well, you can't have the engine below the cargo space (flatbed, box or whatever). It would steal space. This is the main reason. Just look at the old Volkswagen vans where the engine was in the back. The floor wasn't flat and the loading height was high in the back. But almost all full size buses, at least in Europe, today have their engines in the back, behind the drive wheels. The bottom of the bus is like a basement with luggage compartment and th passengers sit above it so the location of the engine doesn't matter. Less engine sound and heat is transferred to the passenger area and the bus drives better on slippery roads compared to a front mounted engine. And obviously no problem with cooling down the engine either.

Can you tell us something about New Zealand 🚛?????
@dallasfrost1996
@dallasfrost1996 3 ай бұрын
Kenworth & International/Navistar actually still make cabovers for the Australasian market, the Kenworth K220 (built in Australia) & the International 9870 (built here in New Zealand exclusively for us). Alongside these American cabovers New Zealand & Australia also have American long nose trucks as well, from brands such as Mack, Kenworth, Freightliner, International, Western Star. We also have European and Asian cabovers as well (Volvo, Scania, DAF, MAN, Mercedes, Iveco, Hino, Isuzu).

A collision is not worse in a cab over because of the nose. Neither truck is going to mushroom by impacting a car that weighs 30x less, and those cars are so short they can't reach the can over windshield to impact the driver

Honestly, for calculating the maximum length, it makes more sense to calculate it by looking at the combined length of the truck to the trailer. For example, there are still many situations where trucks and their trailers get loaded on car ferries or trains to be shipped around like cargo. That means the total length is the limiting factor, so that standard is justified because there are physical limitations in the real world. That's why Europe can build major infrastructure projects like the Channel Tunnel or the Gotthard Base Tunnel. But if you only look at the length of the trailer and ignore the truck, what's the point of that?

@truck Topia, again another video with misinformation, European trucks, have a better ride and are more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient than American trucks, the cabs on European trucks have a 4-point suspension system which makes the ride very comfortable, also the cabs are well insulated against the noise of the engine before I retired I drove a 2014 Mercedes Actros MP4 in the UK, I had to open the window to listen to the engine, just to make sure it was running that is how well insulated they are, Also looking at the fuel efficiency and aerodynamics, it's not uncommon for European trucks to return 10/12 mpg running at 44 metric tonnes(97,000lbs) compared to American trucks running at 36 metric tonnes(80,000lbs), each European country has its own speed limit for trucks, which is usually between 80kph and 90kph, most Western European countries allow 90kph, except the Netherlands which is 80kph, also to increase fuel efficiency the trailers are close coupled to stop the dirty air between the tractor unit and trailer, fuel efficiency and aerodynamics go hand in hand, so again European trucks lead the way where American trucks follow, so again I will say to you guys, do your research before making your videos, I will say this time and time again until you understand that the only advantage that an American truck has over a European truck is the living space.
@bricefleckenstein9666
@bricefleckenstein9666 3 ай бұрын
And American trucks NEED that living space, when we have common long runs in the 3000+ KM range for a SINGLE trip. You'd have to cross pretty much all of Europe to travel what US truckers routinely travel INSIDE the country. Moscow to Paris is appx. 2800 km and crossed multiple countries the LONG way - and is right at the same length as Indianapolis to San Diego which isn't even a "across the USA" route, as Indianapolis to any city on the East Coast is another 1500 km appx.
@davidjames990

@bricefleckenstein9666 , I'm not arguing that point. European trucks are far more advanced in every other way, as I stated in my comment, so much misinformation, due to lack of research.

Your fuel efficiency info is grossly inaccurate. I have 5 Freightliner Cascadia from 2014 to 2016 in my fleet hauling around 42,000 pounds of grain we average at 70 mph 11 to 13 MPG. You haul heavier loads at slower speeds which is where you pickup the mileage but aerodynamically speaking the streamlined US trucks are at least the equal or superior to the Euro cab overs. The only way your argument holds water is if you only consider the traditional long nose brick-ish rigs like your Peterbilt 389's and Kenworth W900's. They do get the lower mileage that you state but are far more comfortable due to the longer wheel base and far larger berths.

Why would rear engine make the vehicle longer? You just say that without providing a reason. The truck is already adding length by being a dog nose, just rearrange where the cap is in relation to that nose
