I’m a diesel mechanic & I’m judging based on how many issues I see with each brand of truck, I gotta say our customers with Peterbilts have the least amount of wiring or chassis issues by far. I would say the worst for wiring issues would be Volvos or internationals. Freightliner seem to just be meh okay. But they’re the cheapest option too.

Currently in my first Volvo, it's CNG and the damn thing sucks. Gutless, constantly developing missfires, it even managed to break the wiper motor in heavy rain, due to the fact that I had the audacity to turn the wipers on full speed. Garbage. Hell, my dad's now ancient Astro 95 with air powered wipers was more reliable.

The brand new Peterbilts have a transmission fault issue that also goes for the Kenworth but the Peterbilts have it more often and it's a bitch trying to get the truck started and to move after that

@@westernstar9121 can’t say I have seen any of that, most of the peterbilts & KW that come through my shop are Manuals so we’ve done a few clutches but that’s mostly it

Very first truck I drove in USA was a Peterbilt so it remains my favorite, having said that all the brands have advantages and disadvantages.

@@kevinkwiatkowski7197 Cummins X15 from Peterbilt 579 is a lot better than the Detroit DD16. Although DD16 is a 600 hp engine, but both the cummins and detroit share same torque, about 2,050 ft lbs of torque

Volvo for me. Smoothest ride, best driver comfort. Important to me cause I spend weeks away from home.

i drove a volvo it is smooth and quit but it just did not have the power we needed for logging we got 300 a load so if you could get an extra trip means 300 more a day with the 505 cat i could always get an extra load if not 2 in a day. this is y u will find logging trucks going balls out to get extra money, a normal day was up too 3 loads a day but 4 or 5 loads u can see my point and this was back in the 90's

I'm a girl and I don't know a whole lot about trucks, but that International Lonestar is one handsome truck. . Somehow they managed to make it aerodynamic and still keep the traditional look. I love that grille and the tall dual exhaust pipes. We don't have cool trucks like this in Germany.

Still driving my 2000 Peterbilt 379 with C-15 Cat 600 and 18 spd.Built to last.1.4 million miles on truck and platinum engine overhaul in November. Still the ole Cat had very little blowby.Regular maintenance is the key.

Hey man serious question for you, how many engine hours did you have when you did that overhaul? And was that your first overhaul or had you had a previous in-frame done?

I started with a Peterbilt 359 EXH, 3406B Cat and a 5&4 transmission. Loved it! Moved to a 379EXH with a 450hp Cat and Eaton Fuller 18spd. Another awesome setup, so you can kind of see where I stand on these..lol

as a truck technician working in a fleet of peterbilt 579s, so far, they are junk. the digital dashes are freezing affecting drivability and ecm mileage to odometer mileage, the side fairing latches and strikers are worn out after 100k, the bendix side radar and front radar are causing so many issues we have drivers threating to park their trucks as they are constantly beeping at everything from overhead bridges, guardrails and even vehicles in other lanes up front, unplugging the sensors dont help, its a programming issue bendix is trying to work on. If a top brand as Peterbilt are having extensive issues, i cant imagine what the other brands are having for issues, kenworth is also part of the paccar family so they will have the same faults as petes. Give me an early 2000s pete 379 with a series 60 and 18 speed any day of the week over this new crap if I was a driver...as a mechanic, I love it as it keeps me busy all day long.

I've had the same adaptive cruise issues with the rental Cascadia I'm in and that has cameras as well as a radar sensor. Still does the same stupid crap as my older KW.

Volvo is the only one that has airbag and reinforced frame for safety. I pick them cause they seems to be the one that care more about drivers

I am north European owner driver. I don't really understand why Volvo do not want to bridge flag ship engine 16 litre 750hp. I have second teuck with this engine and last one is even more boosted with hydrohen and output is 830hp. I do understand usa has more flat roads. Nut torque and lower idle speed makes better engine live.

@@thomtrucker1925 Not counting special routes or permits, the standard load for US truckers is 80000# while it's 140 000# for trucks in Sweden where Scania and Volvo is from. And they're in the process to potentially upping that to over 160 000# if I'm not mistaken. They even have 1 truck hauling fuel for a powerplant at 216 000# (it has special permission though as it not only has an extreme weight but also is the longest truck in europe far exceeding the normal lengt). And the terrain there is more twisty and have frequent and high degrees of elevation changes. That is why Volvo and Scania made those super powerful engines. For most truckers in the states with their regulations on loads and the typical straight roads with not as frequent elevation changes that power is not needed and only means a more expensive truck overall. I think Volvo have probably vetted the market and deemed it not financially feasable to offer that engine there because most US truckers would not buy a truck with that engine.

@@antioch4019 Good summery! The weight limit was increased to around 163k more than 5 years ago. This year the length limit was increased to 34,5m. I can also mention that Volvo D16 was available in the US, it was however discontinued as demand for it were low for the reasons antioch4019 mentioned. They also had manufacturing issues in the US with problems to maintain the very tight manufacturing tolerances required for the D16 engine.

I drove for Marten transportation and Schindler national started with a cab over Navistar. Ruff ride shot frame. Drove a Volvo white GMC next leased to SNI again. The last 6'years Marten transportation I drove Freightliner. With a Detroit engine. And a super 10 transmission. Got a new truck every year with Marten transportation. Frightshaker LoL was the best for me from 1989-99 a million miles 48. states and Canada. And I drove 2 1/2 tons truck in Vietnam 68-69

International is definitely my pick. I currently drive Peterbilt. 85% of the company is International. I used one of the new ones and I'm not gonna lie it was tough getting back into my pete. Even the auto shift wasn't bad. They have a Paddle shifter so you can manually shift if you still want to.

In the last year iv gone from a freightliner to a international, to a peterbilt, and then back to back freightliner just got into my 3 freightliner afew days ago. The peterbilt was spacious but felt the stiffest to drive. The first freightliner was decent and new(40k miles at start) good power and drove smooth, but the other 2 were crap, drive rough and alot of interior things were annoying, (300k-420k at start) the international was the best in my opinion. I really liked the drivability and everything in the interior worked like it was supposed to. It struggled in the wind though and once it hit 300k thing keep going wrong with the motor. Before it hit 300k I loved it though and went all over america with it. Out of the truck I drove 2020 international is my pick. The freightliners im in now ate the oldest iv drove being 2019 and the only Newish truck I drove was a 2022 cascadia.

i work for rush truck centers, who is mainly a peterbilt parts and repair center, i work the warehouse with all of the parts, and it cool to see all of the stuff that goes into these machines

As a long haul Owner Operator , I went with comfort and bought a 2019 Volvo Vnl 860 Globetrotter Automotive 12 spped. I lived in that truck with my wife for 3 years ( she learned to drive in it ) I had other trucks before , but this is the one I kept , reliability not bad ( injector cups and 1 starter ) it has 705,592 miles on it so far . Keeping it till the wheels fall off

To me, the perfect truck would either be a Peterbilt or Kenworth with a 90” sleeper with a queen size bed that lifts up and you have a lot of storage underneath it like freightliners and western stars. Also, Kenworth and Peterbilt need bigger refrigerator options. My wife goes with me and the queen size bed. I shouldn’t have to go to buy a new truck and put a bolt sleeper on it to make that happen. Yes, there are many drivers that don’t stay out very long. I’m not one of them. We stay out 5 6 7 months at a time. If we look at it as getting paid to see the country.

I can't comment on other brands except Peterbilt, but drove most all of them. I put around 750,000 miles on a long wheelbase double bunk cab-over and a very long wheelbase walk in long nose. I never had any problems with either. They were flawless well proven trucks. The long nose was cramped in the front. The Cab-over was like the Starship Enterprise. Complete with a huge 1 piece windshield and 3 windshield wipers. (1982) It blew a turbo on it's very first trip, but that was a Cummins issue with a new style turbo they were using for the 400's, not a Peterbilt issue. And they flew the part and a mechanic out in a private jet to Laramie Wyoming to get it fixed overnight. I just love the Peterglide air ride and consider it far superior to anything else out there; including the Kenworth 8-bag and that mess Freightliner uses. I did spend a little time in a Freightliner and they don't call them Freight shakers for nothing. What a horrible truck. Yee Haa, it rode just like a buckboard.

From a economic standpoint I would have to go with freightliner you can get it with Detroit engine as far as the emissions control engines they get better mileage and less maintenance

Ooh I don't know about the less maintenance but yeah they are pretty damn nice. The best thing is the warranties that freightliner and detroit offer. ALWAYS ALWAYS get the extended warranties.

Ride great, just spec them with a Cummins engine. The Volvo engine harnesses and sensors will drive you insane, if you keep the truck 4 years. Drove a buddy out of business. He manages a small fleet, in the North now.

Maybe if you only drive on.main highways. All these truck brands have a niche market. Mack is vocational to concrete mixers, and refuse trucks. Volvo makes highway haulers. Navistar is cheap short haul Same for freightshakers Western star makes logging trucks Pete and kw make everything in between and for less.

@@geneconnelly3852 I liked how the interior was designed on my Volvo. Was also nice having a roped in windshield instead of glued on. Even as a midroof truck, I felt that I had enough space to store everything I needed to bring.

I drive a concrete mixer have been for 8 and a half years! Drove sterlings, kenworth, peterbilt, freightliners and Western star by far western star are the most comfortable the company that I work for just purchased 4 of them and I got one the best truck ever in my opinion.

I still miss my KW T-2000. It drove down the road like a conventional, plus it had the largest standard sleeper at the time. Backing up, it was like a cabover. You could see everything and I got it in and out of the caves here in KC without any problems. Had a bit cat, which got horrible fuel mileage, but I could top Mt. Eagle in 9th, fully loaded passing trucks that were empty.

I’ve gotten 11MPG out of a 2022 Peterbilt 579 full roof sleeper with Cummins x-15 450HP engine 12-speed automated transmission but mostly what I get is about close to 9mpg average is about 8MPG not bad for a fully loaded sleeper truck with a Thermoking tri pak APU.

Correct me if im wrong to what ive notice via research is kenworth T680 was the first to introduce the digital dash and that technology was incorporated into the Peterbuilt are both of these companies working in partnership

Try spending many months in each truck otr like I did and u will find that Freightliner has the best interior design hands down. I can store a weeks worth of groceries not just leftovers. More storage cabinets. The dash layout makes more sense. Can back in tighter spots easier without opening the door to look. Low price tag. Lower maintenance cost. 100+ more dealer shops than the rest. Best fuel economy. I see the other brands gradually follow Freightliner innovations. There are other things that make the other trucks better like smoother ride, quiter cab. I'm just getting straight to the point. I like to shop for groceries and cook my meals and workout with dumbells in my truck. I'm not bias. I also never thought I'd even be saying this one day! They are the workhorse of the industry! That's the BottomLine!

European trucks have not had manual crash boxes for over 20 years. All their manual transmissions are fully synchronized. Which means they have to use the clutch on every shift, but most clutches are light pressure with air power assist.

Buddy, the last thing you ever want in your truck, is a manual transmission. The only reason US truckers still prefer a manual is because their trucks are still in the experimentation phase of making their own automatics and are still not that good at selecting the correct gear. European trucks (most of them at least) perfected this long ago. Don't make the mistake of thinking a manual is more "fun and engaging" to drive. Fun is for you own private car to joy ride on weekends. In a work truck, you want as little labor as possible. 20 years of rowing through gears is going to leave you with the "shakes" in your senior years.

The new T680 and 579 are the best looking trucks out there. Freightliner might be a cheaper truck, but the Paccar products have a better look. I definitely like the interior design of the Paccar trucks, especially the T680.

A bit rough, nothing flashy, but started out driving Internationals. I respected them because they were tough, rugged trucks. Guys used to beat livin' hell out of 'em! They took it & kept on running.

I don’t drive a Volvo myself, but I will! I’m not a big fan of American style trucks, but I was surprised by how good Volvo’s truck looked. Perhaps it’s their generally square design that I like about Volvo design wise. They never disappoint

Personally, I hate all these trucks. While I recognise the fuel efficiency of the aero style bodies, I find them rather ugly; and the replacing of analogue gauges and buttons with digital displays seems incredibly stupid to me. Half the gauges are hidden, requiring the driver to search through menus to find them; or have been removed entirely in favour of sensors. I think it's much safer to be able to quickly reference a gauge than it is to search for it in the menus. I also want to be able to see if my engine is starting to overheat, or if I'm losing air pressure BEFORE they reach the critical range, where the sensors will start going off. In my honest opinion, I feel that manufacturers nowadays are designing their trucks with new and inexperienced drivers in mind; and while that is a good mentality, it also means that unqualified drivers can drive their equipment. A reviewer (I cannot remember their name), with zero experience driving truck, test drove the new Western Star 57X on Western Stars test track and likened it to driving a Camry. This should be a massive red flag to manufacturers. These machines are not meant for just anybody to get in and use. They require skill and training.

I love the over hood visibility of the 2014 Kenny I drive now. But the small cab doesn’t give much space for two people and their stuff like hardhats and lunch boxes. Being in Canada, it blows me away that the driver has only one floor heating vent that points at the side of my right shin. The dashboard vents are carried over from the 80’s. Why Paccar, why bolt the ECM directly to the engine? The same year Western Star I drove previous had poor, pedestrian and even car hiding visibility but a huge cab with lots of space.

I drive for a maga carrier, they buy Pete's Freightliners and Internationals, they are all garbage because they are speck for a CEO who don't even have or ever had a license to drive a truck, so the performance of all the brands are terrible, and a new driver wouldn't no it because it's the only thing they know. They've mad strides on automatics, but not enough, manual transmissions are still the best. Better feul economy, normally means poor performance for the driver. Trucks are designed for mega companies, not drivers, until that changes, trucks right off the line will just be ok.

Most comfortable truck I used to drive is Volvo 760/860. Worst trucks International, Mack and Freightliner I’ve ever driven. So, my pick : gold medal : Volvo, silver medal : KW, Bronze medal : Peterbilt KW and Peterbilt use under license Paccar engine/transmission that are DAF engines (European truck company from Netherlands) Freightliner are assembled in Mexico. At least, Volvo builds its own trucks from A to Z, engine included.

Early 379 long nosed Pete, with headlights up on the bumper. Powered by 425 Cat , 13 speed and 370 rears. Pure bliss!!!

i am not at all impressed by the limited engine choices in the KW and the Pete. so i guess i will stick with my old junk freightliners with 60 series Detroit's.

i grew up on a 4 and 5 with a 2 speed reared i thought i was living a wet dream when i started driving a 13 speed with splitter the meanest truck was a kw with a 505 cat running 750 hp logging truck it was fast as hell going over the mountain pass at 65 fully loaded with plenty left over. the only thing i didn't like was the extra 6 inches on the front for the engine to fit

My personal favorite truck is the Kenworth W900 with a Cat C15. Now the next truck I'm going to buy is going to be a Freightliner Cascadia with a Detroit Dd16.

the Mack Anthem 6X4 2-Dr High Roof Sleeper Cab should do well in prime Europe markets . . . features like higher ground clearance, actual leather upholstered the cab, Infinity or BOSE® in-cab entertainment system, smaller & compact microwave & large multi adjustable captain seats trimmed in fine Nappa leather . . . to drive in the EU full feature ADAS is a must . . . modern day semi trucks could do without the huge bulky fifth wheel coupling piece of kit to which the trailer is attached . . . because their are better, more convenient tow systems available for semi trucks that doesn't even need the fifth wheel coupling . . .

KW and Peterbilt are good trucks, but the problem with them is the Paccar engine; They don't offer Detroit or Cummins which are both better engines.

@@chakagillis I was thinking they only offered Paccar for a while there. In the 80s and early 90s I maintained a fleet of T-800 KWs, and we had Big Cam Cummins, 3406B Cats, and we even had one with a Series 60 Detroit. Our Cummins engines outlasted the Cats between overhauls.

Freightliner/western star is the best hands down because of the Detroit engine. Cummins give you more power but detroits are more reliable and cheaper to work on when they do break.

Who else agrees that older semi trucks just look better. I get that now trucks are more aerodynamic and made for max efficiency but still older trucks look cooler.

I am not a trucker and with how the industry is going i most likely never will. But if i could buy one and use it for work and all i would most definitely take an international prostar with an x15 sleeper mid roof or higher roof, and manuel transmission. Sorry not taking any automatic
