He was such a talented actor...such range.He leaves behind grandparents and a little boy. Much love and prayers for his family. He was also a play writer. He was detoxing from alcohol when he suffered heart failure. I've got a friend whose boyfriend is under medical supervision for that,and even with medical supervision,it's dangerous. You can't even have alcohol based soaps or shampoos,bc w/the drugs they give you to ease you through the rehab,if you use those,you become violently ill and can,God forbid,die. He was only a year older than myself..39.I'm lesbian,and when he played Lafayette,he had *me* fooled.It was only when he was interviewed by The Advocate that he revealed he was straight. If you want to see some more of his work,watch Secretariat..he plays the groom,and he was amazing in that role,as well.RIP,Nelsan,you beautiful queen!

I love the True Blood series. Lafayette was definitely one of my favorite characters along with Eric Northman. I wish most gay guys had his sort of attitude to really shake up the homophobic community. Being gay had nothing to do with it.... Lafayette just seemed cool as hell and like someone it would be fun and hilarious to smoke a blunt with. He'd definitely always be invited to my party. RIP Sir

In the commentary, Alan Ball mentions that the actor came out like that on set one day (doorag and eyelashes) and they decided to keep it. Nelsan chose Lafayette's wardrobe from that point.

this guy was what made the series for me, im not a full straight american like id expect to riducule this character but i was on edge at the time and i grew to love him! he made this series what it was, like how Terry was that sweet but loving soldier guy, laffiette was the, in the know, caring guy and its a shame we didnt get him for the whole series, they did well with leading him off the show though, i didnt feel like he went too soon but at the same time i didnt know he died back then, i think i was still hyped he was selling V haha
