FYI: JD2 no longer sells the Model 3 bender, they are moving focus to the model 32. They will still make dies for the model 3.
How much does it actually cost to have a tube bender in your garage? If you have dreamed of building a roll cage, tube front end, or bash bars then you are in the same shoes I was in. After selling off a project I decided to invest in a new tool.
The JD2 bender is the standard when it comes to tube bending fir small shops and DIYers like myself. They have been building quality tools for years and they have a reputation for building amazing products. A quick search on there website shows you can own there model 3 bender for just over $300. Sounds like a deal but how much does it actually cost to own a tube bender?
I take a deep dive and look at the total cost for me to buy and install a bender in my home garage and go over the things Iv learned along the way.

I bought my manual bender back around 1990 to do race car roll cages , on drag cars and circle track cars . I have made lots of different things with my bender , and have the 1" , 1-1/2" , 1-5/8" and 1-3/4" dies . The best way to not get any squish on the inside is to lock the leading end of the pipe with the bolt so it can't slide back into the die . The thinner the tubing , the more important it is to lock the tubing in place with the bolt . I have done .063 1" tubing and it comes out nice . The Jd Squared bender is going to live forever , I know mine is around 32 years old and has a LOT of bends on it .

Was that difference in the bend due to not going a bit past 90 ? The tube swings back when tension is released ? I’m about ready to get one but am going with the new swag hydraulic mount. I may look at doing that swivel too. My anchors are threaded & recessed for bolts. Safer when not in use. Thanks for your insight on how good JD2 is.

I had a model 3 bender for a number of years and bent 1/2" to 2" tubing for a number of projects. The bender worked flawlessly every time. Before buying the JD2 I tried a friend of mine's no-name Chinese bender and it failed miserably on 1", 0.065 wall tube. You get what you pay for.

In Oz we have a lot of options along with a local "knock off" of the JD. Prices for the JD here would make you weep (well they make me weep) but it's really the only one to get as nobody has a bad word to say about it.

picked up a heavy steel tube 6ft 3 1/2" with drilled flanged ends from a local scrap yard, the the very nice guy let me have it for free. will cut in half and use for pedestal. a 3Ft piece would have been too good to be true. Im going to see if I can calculate the wall thickness from the external dimensions and just remembered I have a set of telescopic internal gauges, nice maths project for my kids, steel weight and externals should be enough to calculate wall thickness, I couldnt directly measure the ID due to raised welds in the mouth, maybe thats why it was scrapped.

What do you think brother if you had to do it again spend the extra and setup for a hydraulic ram and put it on a pedestal with casters? I apologize if you covered that I bounced around in the video. I'm currently trying to decide if I'm going to buy everything for bending myself or a cagekits jobber, first project is tube front on my LS1 S14.

Petrol360 Great video and info. I just received my model 32 bender and added the electric/hydraulic pump. I spoke to Brad from JD2 multiple times and he informed me that lubing is not necessary on their followers or dies so I’m a little conflicted on that issue. My question to you is, will you be doing videos on upcoming EBike builds? I’m very interested in that area of fabrication. Thanks.

I ordered it a few years ago and it was in stock so it shipped out the same week. I did however order a new die a few months ago and it took a month for them to ship it. Customer service said they have been very busy this year as the whole tool industry so they can’t keep up with the demand.
