My opinion may not be popular but I think it was selfish of John to think the people of that island "needed" to hear HIS beliefs even if it meant exposing them to sickness. They made it clear they weren't interested twice and he wouldn't stop. Believing is one thing but forcing it on others against their will and putting lives on the line is immoral.

Not to mention how many Fd Up , terrible people Christians there are. Growing up most people I knew were some form of Christian tho many were not involved in church so I never really thought about afterlife regarding other religions. Around 20 I became good friends with 2 sisters who were from India & Sheikhs. I would spend time at their house & spend the night sometimes. They had an entire room that was set up for prayer with shrines & would hear the parents praying. The parents were very nice & welcoming. I remember having a clear thought one day that god would not punish these people or make them suffer because they weren’t Christian. And no one was x

I can't believe they started a murder investigation, that boy knew what he was getting into and his death is his own fault and his alone..He also isn't the first missionary to be killed by a tribe who wasn't down with the gospel.. To be fair, the murder investigation was directed at the missionaries who encouraged him to go, not towards the natives, and I do think the people who "helped" him with his idiot quest should have a share of the blame. But ultimately I'd say even they were just guilty of manslaughter at best - he made the choice to try and force his beliefs on these people, with or without the encouragement from his peers. I don't think the natives were guilty of anything, because our idea of "crime" doesn't apply in a society that lives so far apart from everyone else and just keeps their own law on their own land. They warned him twice and he was still delusional enough to go back and try a third time. They had every right to do what they did.

I find it strange that people think they should be charged with murder, because the people who think that, arrogantly assume the Sentinelese should abide by our laws - Not that we should be respecting and abiding by their laws, on their own island. Nor the laws of India that say you should not trespass on the Sentinelse. I think it's rude, kinda of racist, and a total coloniser mindset. "Make the natives abide by our law!" - Nah bro, how about you don't look at them as less than you and your society and your morals. Those same traits as seeing people as less than themselves and arrogance relate to those Christians, like John Chau, who think they can use their religion as a weapon to force people into their morals, change a countries laws into their laws, or to do what they want. Making people live how they want based on their religion. Even if, like John Chau they do it in a well meaning way, itnever turns out well. I don't personally know any Christians who behave in such a pig headed, arrogant or selfish manner, but we all know they're out there. Esp in politics. What on earth would the Sentinelse people want with Christianity? That brutal, abusive and violent Christian idea of 'civilizing the natives' has lead to all sorts of destruction in this world. Like the generations of children who survived and died in the abusive residential schools. Over policing and imprisoning the African American population. Or the Maori people losing a lot of their language, history, their own religions, and all of their land. Many around the world are left with nothing but poverty and jesus. While a lot of the original people of many countries have learned this well after it's too late, at least the Sentinelse have a chance.

In an alternate reality where they are charged with murder, it would probably be a strong argument (aside from the obvious) that our modern laws just do not apply to them based on the fact that their people haven't evolved with the rest of us. Another argument in their favor would be that they are so isolated that they may not even understand that other human beings live in the world, even more jarring that the people they saw were white. In their mind they were facing an unfamiliar threat. Definitely in self defense.

I studied anthropology at uni and I believe they should be left alone. So much genocide (intentional and unintentional) has been committed by people trying to educate or ‘save’ people who are living their own lives. I’m glad you mentioned sickness because even a mild illness could wipe them out. You’re an awesome KZbinr and I’m stoked people are seeing the wrong committed against people of colour and indigenous communities. We need to treat each other with respect and and not impose ourselves on others. Sending love ❤️❤️❤️

I wish I knew why he was so fixated on these people specifically, it’s hard not to think he wanted to be the one to do the seemingly impossible for ego purposes. He had no connection to these people from across the world, if he wanted to spread the gospel there’s a whole planet full of people he could preach to. There’s plenty of people who desperately need and WANT help, so why did he have to go through all these hoops to preach to a group who clearly didn’t want to be contacted?

Part of it could be that A lot of Christians believe that Jesus can’t come back if Everyone hasn’t had the choice to know and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. These Christians ie evangelicals, Mormons and the like will do everything they can do to help usher in the End Days. It’s also why they are so for Israel because it he to be a Country and things have to happen IN Israel for the End Days to happen. It’s all about ushering it in.

I had heard about this case, but didn’t know the Sentinelese had been “successfully” contacted before by anthropologists (with the coconuts) or that John had actually gone up to them and had an exchange. This is all mind blowing. Also wonder if there are any other tribes like them or if they’ve ever tried to build a ship and explore beyond the island? Or they’ve just never been interested in leaving and just happy and content in their home. Wow. A very interesting world.

I don't understand how we as society don't comprehend that colonization is going to destroy native people. I don't think their is anything wrong with how the people attacked him. He knew it would happen, for one. For two, this culture exists as cultures existed thousands of years ago, when that kind if a greeting was commonplace. Hi, archeologist here! I have a lot of understanding for anthropologists who wanted to "study" the tribe and find out how the evolution has treated them. That information would be very valuable when interpreting other materials left by our ancestors, and we would be able to have a clearer picture of how they used to live. However, even though this is a unique opportunity to learn something new of our pasts, it would be way too easy for us to ruin these people's habitats, and lives in general. I'm glad they're under the protection of the law, and I hope that one day we'll be able to make contact with them safely, learn some things, and let them live their lives in peace. Thank you for covering this! 🥰
