I was born in 1980 and raised in Houstons Heights. In the 80s and 90s we could do as we pleased and wander the neighbourhood all hours of the day or night because most of our parents worked and we were left to our own devices most of the time. The heights was a awesome place because it was very metropolitan but there was heavily wooded areas as well. There where secret alleyways creeks and bayous that you could travel through easily. The areas were so heavily wooded that if we skipped school and we had no place to go you could easily walk Into the woods be as loud as you want smoke as much as you wanted make camp style fires and no one would know you where there. We would build occasional large structures out of palettes to prevent from getting when it rained on us. I'm not sure why but everyone always makes it seem as if the heights was a very expensive well off part of Houston to live but it was the exact opposite in the 80s and 90s and I'm sure the same in the time of dean corll aside from its small historical district. When the nineties hit I was starting to come of age and much like these stories of the victims of corll there was a lot of drugs and alcohol and older men and women that liked spending time with us younger kids maybe because it made them feel younger or that they liked we always had lots of girls around us and many friends. Many of us that wandered the streets came from broken homes and looked up to the older crowd but many of them did not have our best interests in mind as well as providing drugs and alcohol. In the 90s there was also a rumour of a man I never met who sold candy and was molesting children that worked for him. I knew many kids who had sold candy for him as well and he actually had a white van from what I heard. I do not know what came of him aside from him being attacked and run out of the neighborhood by older adults of his victims. The older I got the more dangerous I realised some of these people were that we were around. It's a wonder nothing happened to me in all the bad situations and people's houses I ended up in but I can't say the same for some of my friends from back then. I remember growing up hearing camp fire rumours of a man who sold candy in our neighborhood and was murdering children. To me it was rumours/urban legend but something I never forgot. Then one day around 1992 I found a book that my big sister had on serial killers and Charles Manson was on the front. In that book it had Dean Corll the Candy Man and that's when I knew that it was a true person and it had really taken place in our neighborhood. I've always said these are the real monsters the worst ones to be caught by people like Corll, Gacy, Dahmer, Ramirez, Bundy. They will do worse to you than what Freddy Jason Michael Myers would do to you. Even though it is stated people don't realize how horrific terrifying and demonic of a situation it must have been to go through for those young boys. There was a big blotch of woods right next to the bayou right across from an HEB and K Mart on 18th street in the heights that I used to skip school at with my friends. I would always find pieces of bones and on different occasions I would put them next to my arm or shin and they where the same size and tell my friends look these are probably human bones but none of them believe me they would always say they are animal bones. Then one day I found a small part of the front of a skull that fit right over my eye and nose and they still said it was animal bones. That area of woods was torn down years in the mid to late nineties and they found me mutilated body parts fresh and old in that thick blotch of woods. That same large concrete bayou if you travel it went into to our neighbouring neighbourhood oak forest where another tragedy happened the Jennifer Ertman and Elizabeth Pena murders that really shook people up back then. I joined the army in the year 2000 and I am still in the military till this day. I come back to the heights occasionally because my big sister lives there now and it is extremely metropolitan and there are no blotches of woods left and the houses are all $400,000+
