Man, I loved the Ultraverse. I got into comics in the early 90's and the Ultraverse was the first time I got to get in on a whole universe from the ground up. It gets trashed a lot when brought up these days, but I miss it all the same. It's a damn shame their premiere character is forever stained from having been created by what turned out to be a real-life monster. And it's not the only title that feels weird in hindsight. Jones also wrote Solitaire and Freex, both of which feel all wrong given context. Also, it was Jeff Johnson who penciled Solitaire.

I remember that bullet hole comic 🤣🤣🤣 I think the worst was the issue of Lobo that was completely blank. People were FURIOUS!

Thanks for this video! I’ll always have a soft spot for the Ultraverse, it’s a shame those characters are being completely ignored by Marvel. For all of Malibu hyping their writers, they had some great artists. Norm Breyfogle deserves to be celebrated and Rune had some gorgeous BWS art!

I really loved PRIME when it came out. A sorta 90s Shazam. Did Breyfogle draw Prime for its entire run??? I really liked Gerard Jones writing (although feeling ick now). He did FREEX, which was another Ultraverse comic I liked. Norm Breyfogle did METAPHYSIQUE for Bravura, which I never saw. I can't find that.

Marvel also thought they were buying back some market share, but that wasn't part of their public statements

Breyfogle is one of my favorite artists. Maybe someday you could review his 1992 Metaphisique? Great black and white art there... plus he wrote those stories, I believe. It is worth an extra sized artisan edition.

More Malibu Comics coverage would be awesome! Still have all my Protectors, Ferret, Gravestone comics. Hidden gems for sure!

I agree with the "more Breyfogle" sentiment here in the comments!

In Wizard magazine, Norm said he had to come up with a whole new anatomy for Prime. It was a challenge. Prime is just the idealistic image of a superhero from the mind of a 13 year old kid.

I wish that Marvel either relaunch or sell the Ultraverse comics line, what a waste in all these years not to have them back 😢

I was not aware they made a Necroscope comic. The books were pretty good.

Is Prime (as a character) entirely DOA based on the actions of one of the creators? Separate the “Disney/Marvel isn’t going to do anything with the Ultraverse characters” argument…Prime is a good example of the dilemma of separating the creator from the creation…

Should he be? Yes. That being said, if it was feasible (monetarily of course) for Marvel to use him, I’m sure they would.

So sad that Gerard Jones also wrote one of the best books about the Superman creators and the early comic book industry. Love the art, but can't defend the artist...

I mean it’s mostly sad that he preyed on children. Him writing a book people like that they can’t read due to his crimes is pretty far down the list of sad thing’s associated with Gerard Jones

Martian Manhunter: American Secrets written by Jones was also great. Terrible dude was a stand-out writer unfortunately.

As you've done Prime, how about a review of The Exiles?(mixture of x-men villans & ultraverse charactors.) It seemed an alright series.
