Samuel Cook[4] (January 22, 1931 - December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Considered to be a pioneer and one of the most influential soul artists of all time, Cooke is commonly referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive vocals, notable contributions to the genre and significance in popular music.
Cooke was born in Mississippi and later relocated to Chicago with his family at a young age, where he began singing as a child and joined the Soul Stirrers as lead singer in the 1950s. Going solo in 1957, Cooke released a string of hit songs, including "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Wonderful World" (not to be confused with Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World), "Chain Gang", "Twistin' the Night Away", "Bring It On Home to Me", and "Good Times". During his eight-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Pop Singles chart, as well as 20 singles in the Top Ten of Billboard's Black Singles chart.
In 1964, Cooke was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles.[6] After an inquest and investigation, the courts ruled Cooke's death to be a justifiable homicide; his family has since questioned the circumstances of his death.
Cooke's pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the work of Otis Redding and James Brown. AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
The first funeral service for Cooke was held on December 18, 1964, at A. R. Leak Funeral Home in Chicago; 200,000 fans lined up for more than four city blocks to view his body. Afterward, his body was flown back to Los Angeles for a second service, at the Mount Sinai Baptist Church on December 19, which included a much-heralded performance of "The Angels Keep Watching Over Me" by Ray Charles, who stood in for a grief-stricken Bessie Griffin. Cooke was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

@@jbo6096 In no particular order as i feel they are all outstanding. Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Ben E. King, Jackie Wilson, and someone many have probably not heard of, Ted Hawkins. I saw and met Ted Hawkins back in 1990 singing on a milk crate in Venice Beach. I was astounded by him and his guitar as were so many people who were strolling by and stopped dead in their tracks, it was like people were hypnotized by him. Never forget that. Had a VHS of his story, and many notables in the music industry spoke very highly of him, Harry Belafonte, Mavis Staples of The Staple Singers, and more. I know this is more than 5 but, i couldn't leave any of them out. Only Johnny Mathis is still with us, may they all Rest In Paradise, their music lives on with me. Sam Cook was a Groundbreaking Singer. He was Handsome, Well Dressed, Articulate, and a Gentleman. He had a Gift and a Talent that we want see the likes of again. The Ending of his Life was Tragic, and it’s very clear that there was foul play (At Work) in his Death. The likes of which will never be solved but God has brought it to it’s Proper Conclusions. For it is not How he Died but what he left behind that’s Important. Thank You for Sharing some of : The Life of Sam Cook. It was Well Done Respectfully. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

They have more detailed story out about how Sam Cooke signed documents that he did not agree and basically they stole his music and the royalties how the record company got it and passed it on to his family. Sam’s assistant was very suspicious about the record company owner, producer and did not trust him as well as Sam’s friends. Yes they did set him up and killed him because he became very suspicious. He’s not then only one that has met his demise for not just walking away.

One conspiracy theory remains: Sam Cooke was not only a singer, he was a songwriter, managed other up-and-coming talent. He also did his OWN publishing! It is said he was approached by some syndicate people (unknown to him) asking if they could take over the publishing. He refused. Also, his clothing was stolen, he had in one shoe, and his fingernails were shredded. Movies have never been made regarding his life. There is fear, still, and threats to the family.

The GOAT! As far as his murder goes…truly one of the biggest mysteries of the last century, not to mention, a crushing blow to ‘Black America’ & the music industry as a whole. Today, Sam should represent the independent creative spirit that harbors in us all. And while that may ring true for some, others who get a glimpse into the window of his life become duped by the ‘official’ story of the way he died. With a simple read, one can see that it’s outright ridiculous. With in-depth analysis of the time of day, the landscape of LA crime/mob/law, his business dealings along with his own nature & habits as described by his closest friends/family, one can come up with various scenarios that all point to a tragic & gruesome end (that places the 2 women supposedly involved simply as outsiders who knew to hush and play ball). I believe you’ve done a good job in presenting the details simple enough that some will be intrigued to look deeper. Thanks for shedding some light on the immense talent that was Sam Cooke!

This was before my time. After I got in my 20s his story was one worth looking into. I took 4 years of criminal justice. No it was no self defense, I don't believe for a minute that Mr Sam Cooke took her there to Alledgley Assault her. I don't believe it was a chance meeting. I also believe those two women knew eachother. Learning of thier Alledgeld history. She could of ran once he got out of the car. No she saw that was of cash knew she was going to get it.we talking about the 60s. Young Black Talented, Singer, Songwriter not to mention Good looking. Many artist played around. Alledgley. It's sad, tradgic. Reguardless. I don't think he did anything to deserve the way he died. If all the records were kept. It's possible this case could be solved. Lot cold cases have been solved. But his was probally listed as justified homicide. Many records of the report and trial may no longer exist. I love all kinds of music. Anytime a young Artist die you have to wonder. But thanks Scott. For showing us Mr Cooke final resting place. My mom loved all kinds of music, and Mr Cooke was one of her favorites. It's funny how back then teenagers listened to a lot music, loved what they loved. I don't think most teenagers were as racists as a lot of adults. I might be wrong. Music is music. If you love it reguardless of the color of the Artist, you bought it, listened, danced to it. Didn't care what others thought. I know I don't. I know I probally won't get to go there. I'm glad you did, paid your Respects, to both Mr Cooke and his Son. Was it a year later that he was killed after his son died.?. That's Sad.😣. Take care, yeah I talk a lot, part of my Profession. 😁. RIP Baby Vincent Cooke and Mr Sam Cooke.🙏🕊🦋✨🌠🌻🌷💐💜. Love, respect and positivity always. 🧘‍♀️🙌👍✌🦋🌠🌻💜💫🖖. Neita james. 🙂👋.

Glad to see this video. I always thought that there was something off about the way the women said things happened at the motel that night. Singer Etta James claimed that both of his hands had been broken and crushed. And I believe also she said that his nose appeared to be broken. I just always had a feeling that things didn't happen the way these two ladies said that it did at that motel.

I find it to be off as well, because Mr. Sam Cooke was aspiring to have full control of his music and label. For him to die like that, has the mob written all over it and back then the mob will muscle the artists to do things their way or suffer the consequences which is death....even Motown was immersed into mob ties and Berry Gordy was the head honcho there, but the mob controlled him and as we all know, Motown had the artists that were of major substance. The artists didn't get paid for their singing abilities and worth like they should have, but Berry Gordy and the mob did...just think about it for a minute. The mob has serious connections when it comes to boxing matches too...that's how Mr. Sonny Liston started out and his death is also mysterious. I'm sorry to be going way out on this topic, but back then gangsters ruled the music industry and so many other businesses, because it was and still is an easy cash cow.

@@sufundasamuels2313 Very true. In July 1966 Bobby Fuller was found dead in the front seat of his mother's Oldsmobile and Erik Greene who was related to Sam Cooke, I don't recollect how they were related at the moment, he cited similarities between the deaths of Mr. Cooke and Bobby Fuller.

@@plymouthduster225 Yes, I believe Mr. Erik Greene was Mr. Sam Cooke's great nephew or something like that. Scott, don't know if you read it or not, but Etta James gives a chilling account of what she saw when she observed Sam's body. (You may mention this in the video, but haven't yet as I paused to type this). I think there is WAY more to this than the "known and accepted" story. I love this style of videos you do. Cooke was taken out because of his influence then his plans. He owned all his master's to his music he was gonna go global/ independent with distribution. The Mafia wasn't having that. Used a woman to lure Cooke over they beat him to death and staged the scene . Other artists later tried the same thing Cooke did it didn't end well for them either. The Mafia will let you own catalogs n masters but who distributes it will always be them. Hope this helps

They made Micheal Jackson fake his death to get back the Beatles n Elvis catalog only because Micheal owned it all outright so he was in the distribution clause aswell . Warren Buffett sent a plane for prince the poor guy never saw it coming. They got him too. Dave Chappelle rebirthed Rick James career look they got him too. In the music industry a black man is only gonna make it so far with some exception. They allow Jay-Z and Kanye to become billionaires to continue stealing talent distribution rights etc. They prop up the few to scam the many . I found out some pretty disturbing things having access , my family has been in law enforcement in many places for long times .
