I joined Slave as lead singer in 1982 ....When I landed in Dayton Ohio i walked off the plane and Roger was there! Slave, was NOWHERE in sight man. Why and how he happened to be there I will never know but I went up to him and of course i was just flummoxed. I introduced myself to him and he gave me a hug and wished me luck. Later we had a best band contest against Roger and Zapp.....They won! It was in Columbus Ohio. Losing Roger was like losing Prince and i will always be grateful for his guidance and his talents. He would always say to me"When you gon stop drinking that wine/Alcohol? Which really is the reason that my career was a failure. Well now i have over 15 years with no relapse through Prayer...... We lost him way to soon and May he be Eternal!!

I met him in the mid 90s. I was a Night Manager at Echo Sounds Recording Studios in Los Feliz near Hollywood in Los Angeles. When we shook hands he said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you” and I replied, “It’s an honor to meet you”. He was killed two weeks later. A one of a kind musician, he will be remembered for having his own style and a unique voice.

@@waynefoote3781 Thank you. Meeting him was truly an honor for me. I had listened to his music since I was a kid so even shaking his hand was awesome. I was sitting at my desk in the studio office one day, watching the television in there. All of the sudden I saw on the news that he had been killed. Everyone in the studio just lost it because he was literally just there two weeks prior to that tragic event. Bro, I’m not even related to him but I was hurt. I had just shook his hand so his death really disappointed me. He was already an icon to me as a young musician and producer myself at the time. I will never forget his genuine humility.

So sad. That’s what I assumed before researching his death. My mom told me that his own brother shot and killed him, then killed himself. So tragic. Hollywood can really ruin an entire family. Look at Carrie Fischer, Debbie Reynolds, The Jacksons, Aaron Carter and his sister, Winona Ryder, etc.

I was in the military and serving in Germany from 87-90. My brother in law took us to an NCO club near Schwäbisch Gmünd to see Roger play for the troops. I was already a big fan and had several of his recordings. It was a small venue but Roger and his band Jammed for several hours in this small club on post. My wife and I were drinking at a table close to the stage and he was playing "Do Wa Ditty "Blow that Thing". I was singing along and having a damn good time when Roger walked across the top of the table, stuck the Mic in my face and said "sing it white boy"........then handed me the mic. He started wailing on that talk box and I sang a few more lines. It was the best time I had ever had. We had some drinks with the band afterwards and they hung out with all the military folks there for a long time. I really admired all of them and have loved all their music for all these years. I felt really bad when I heard that he had been killed. I'll never forget that night of dancing with my wife singing and drinking with Roger and the band and watching them treat us troops to a damn good time! God bless you Mr. Troutman....RIP!

1990-1995 we would see them in concert in Anaheim celebrity theatre and at low rider shows in LA and LA county. We would take limos as teenagers we would all put money in. Show up like the men all paused. Anyways Roger Zapp their openings with the Ohio Players was the most amazing performances by both bands. Talented Geniuses all of them both band sky high performances atomic. These guys were the best performers and when they performed they went to work they were fun magical superstars. I understand that they buried them together. I pray for their family and send them love and healing and hugs respect and honor. Thank you for your beautiful gift to this world blessings. I blast Zapp and Roger in Boyle Heights on Whittier Blvd at least once a month.

John Singleton as director is who I first thought of when the unsung video of Roger came out. All the comments and stories written to his surviving family( on KZbin) were really nice reading. John Singleton had passed as well. Even though it was a tragic ending to Rogers career the story and legacy live on. A whole lot of people were uplifted by him and his family with their showmanship and stage presence. I never did get to his concerts but family family told me all about it. I'll be watching for sure.🤞

Roger's music was an anchor for my memories, helping me get through a tough time the past few years as I worked through some stuff. His talent renewed my interest in getting back to my roots with music and changed the way I produced. I could hear passion in his work, since The Many Facets of Roger. I love what he's created, and he ended up shaping a huge evolution in west coast hip-hop in his lifetime. Undoubtedly a legend. I hope Larry and Roger found peace after this life.

I grew up listening to Roger Troutman‘s music. When I was younger I never knew what the talk box was. When I heard more bounce to the ounce when I was three years old I actually thought it was a girl singing because of the high pitch harmonies. Then I would hear low voices and thought that they were men. I later found out through the Internet that it was a talk box. I’ve been playing the talk box since 2004. I got my first keyboard from Terry Zapp Troutman himself. I have met him as well. He and his wife are very nice people. The last album that Zapp produced was an album called Zapp seven Roger and friends. This came out in 2018.

I am still Devastated of the lost of both brothers but, mostly Roger. Once saw his performance ( DC ) Carter Barron Theater late nineties I only maybe 50 feet from him when he came up to the Sound Check Box. One Awesome Person and Musician.

ehh kinda. Auto-tune and using a vocoder are really two different things tho. Automatically tuning your voice does kinda give it a robotic sound if you set it to fast correction. A vocoder is a keyboard that uses speech input to change the sound and usually the player will play chords giving it a harmonized sound. T Pain just overdubbed his tracks with his own voice to harmonize. I guess they achieve close to the same thing but in very different ways

Roger’s final recorded performance was for Kansas City Hip Hop artist Tech N9ne’s 2001 album Anghellic on the album’s closer (the song was recorded some months before his passing and there’s footage here on KZbin.)

I didn't know that Roger died until I saw Shirley Murdock's Unsung episode, Larry was jealous of his brother and to bury Roger with his murderer is not right, I understand that Larry and Roger were brothers but why bury them together knowing that Larry murdered him. Rest In Peace Roger ❤🕊️🙏🏽🎹🎤🎸🌹.

Larry was a jealous hearted, envious person who decided that if he couldn't be the one making money off Roger then no one else was going to either. Only reason he committed suicide was due to his cowardly fear of going to prison. He reminds me of my late older brother, he was jealous hearted too. He once stood guard outside my house while his friends came in and robbed me.

I can say I have seen James Brown (1st show age 8), Zapp, Funkadelic, George Clinton and all his rollouts, Bootsy and his Rubber Band, Slave, Confunction, Slade, Gap Band, Rick James, Prince NPG/Revolution, etc, so many tight, funk-driven bands. I am glad to have experienced such a time in music. Time when real musicians played real instruments. 🎸 👏🏽
