When I was 16 and my sister was 13, our family moved house so that, for the first time, the two of us had to catch a bus to and from school instead of walking. We were at different schools and caught different buses, but they both arrived in our new home village at roughly the same time, so I met my sister and we walked the rest of the way home together. This must have happened very soon after we moved, maybe a week or so. The walk was less than a mile. It was a hot day. About half-way there, as we prepared to cross the road to enter the housing estate, a car pulled up at the kerb in front of us and the driver asked if he could give us a lift. The car was red, but that's all I remember about it. I said no, it wasn't far. My sister wanted to accept, but I took her arm and refused. He was quite persuasive and really tried to get us into the car, but I said it was fine, we were nearly there. My sister tried again to let us get into the car. I don't remember exactly what the man said - the usual things about us looking tired and him knowing our parents and wanting to help, I expect, but it was a very long time ago now. He eventually took no for an answer and drove off. I should probably have been more worried than I was at the time. I didn't recognise him and, as I say, we hadn't lived there long at all so it was very unlikely that he did know our family, and it would have been pointless to give us a lift for the very short distance to our house, so I really tend to think he was up to no good. This was in a small village in Hampshire, England, in 1976. I wonder what would have happened if we had got into that car ...
@MalevolentMischief Жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry that you and your sister had to go through that, glad you stayed steadfast in your approach of not getting in that car. Well written and it gave me chills, have you ever thought about submitting this to be narrated? With the 8th highest crime rate in the country, I wouldn't be so stoked about being in Oakland California. Well frankly, I wouldn't be stoked to be in California anywhere.
@MalevolentMischief11 ай бұрын
As someone who was born and raised in Oakland, I can honestly say that I never felt more in danger than in any other large metro city in the nation. Crime rates are crime rates, and those can't really be argued with, I suppose. But don't go to the areas where you shouldn't be, be aware of your surroundings, and just don't be a target. Seems like solid advice for being anywhere though, not just The Town. And California is only a terrible place to be if one consumes certain media without question, and that can be a slippery slope in and of itself.

I’ve lived in NYC all my long life and these days (despite the hype) it’s one of the safer big cities in the US. Still, if I had the opportunity, there’s only one state in which I’d prefer to live: Maine. It’s beautiful and the people are great. I’m only sorry that in the past ten-fifteen years the areas that were known for lovely rustic summer cabins are now overrun by freakish summer McMansions. If there ever was a serial killer in Maine, it’d probably turn out to be some wealthy summer visitor.😂

:44 a very sad fact for the more vulnerable of populations all the world over. Even here, in America. I used to feel at liberty to live my life like the free creature I am born to be but quickly learned that the truth is, we all may be created equal but by no means will most people be treated as such. Be very wary of anyone, really and better believe you are going to be a lot better off to always err on the side of caution and listen to and learn the language of your intuition AND unto thyself...BE TRUE!
@MalevolentMischief Жыл бұрын
In a lot of situations, we are not as free as we'd like to think. Due to societal restrictions, historical acts, and other limiting factors, it is definitely on us as individuals to do our best to think, act, and behave in ways that do not reinforce those same styles of injustices that have gotten us to where we are today. We can only do our best, but "doing" is key.

Thanks for watching!! I think it’s important to note that OP in that story was from Europe, so identifying wildlife sounds here in CA may have not been the most accurate. And (thanks to other commenters) it perhaps wasn’t that the license plate itself was different, but the license plate frame that could have indicated Northern CA vs Southern CA. 😁

Third story..where the f was that girls father and stepmother? Ive been to fairs (state fairs)! Three hours of looking? First why werent pos parents looking? Where were they found? Why weren't they cited by child services? Why didnt girl get help sooner...ticket counter? Info desk? Food wagon? Merch booth? Heck animal exhibit? Probably scared to get in trouble for telling on said " parents" but still at 12 it wouldn't be 3 hrs for me b4 i got help which is literally on every corner! Idk sounds made up after putting myself mentally in that situation. I got lost in a big department store at 6 and panicked and got help. It was 15 minutes
@MalevolentMischief5 ай бұрын
Oh man, you're speaking all the things that I first thought about the situation regarding the guardians. However, I guess I'm idealistic in always thinking that parents are actually gonna.. ya know, parent. As far as holding the kid responsible for their actions, I feel where you're coming from.. but it's also hard to feel like a child should be held to a certain standard. I remember getting lost in a mall when I was a kid, and my first inclination wasn't to find security or ask another adult for help. It was to try and find my mom myself. It ended up working itself out, and I don't really remember leaving my mom's side after that occurrence. Obviously OP from the story, wasn't raised with that luxury. Sad story for sure.

To the girl that had the lady pull up and say your parents told her to take him to baseball practice. It is possible some parents would hire someone to try and get their kids into a car. Makes sense, to have your kid get scoldings for getting into a car with a stranger. You know that kid would never do that again. Pretty smart, for those with means.
