This video outlines the proper technique to perform a true leg length measurement. First place one end of the measuring tape over the ASIS, then place the other over the medial malleolus. Compare side to side.

This is only valuable for someone who has such high leg length discrepancy, that measuring it is worthless because its obvious at first glance.

You're measuring the part of the pelvis with the leg. Rarely, is the pelvis symmetrical.

So could someone tell me what the average leg length to height ratio should be for a 5’8”/5’9” white male? I believe my legs are too short but it could be my build like a bodybuilder with some excess fat that makes my legs and arms appear short.

My height is 5'7 and half and my leg length is 111
@Mattwolf1186 Жыл бұрын
@@hellcat553 From where to where on the legs did you measure from? That seems very long for 5’7. You’re not talking about where the leg pivots at the upper thigh but where you would pull your pants up at top of hips right? Still that’s very long.

@@Mattwolf1186 ik its sounds unbelievable, i did exactly what told in the video and also assistant who can help me with. @@hellcat553 Seems like you would have an unusually short torso. Your legs would actually be like 45 or 46 inches if measured to the floor because that was only measured to the ankle. Mine are about 39 inches to floor and I’m 5’8” 1/4. Where my legs pivot at the greater trochanter/hip socket is 36 inches which I think is normal for my height after all and I’m a guy. Are you male or female?

@@W_T_D Hi there, to answer your question I will qualify why I can! I have been studying leg length discrepancy (LLD) for 30-years and I am a PhD researcher in this area too. Firstly, you can measure LLD accurately on a couch. Much of the research says it is less accurate. The best method to measure LLD is X-ray and even that can yield 1-2mm differences between raters. In this video he is attempting to measure from the medial malleolus to the anterior inferior iliac spine (ASIS) with no markers. Even with pen marks he isn't measuring anything clinically useful. It's all 'smoke-and-mirrors'. The only useful way to measure leg length is from the centre of the femoral head to trochlear surface of the talus (and knee in between also if you want to take into account any varus valgus angles at the knee). Every human I have ever assessed has some degree of pelvic torsion (twist) which means that the right and left innominates are never symmetrical in orientation. When lying supine like this a posteriorly rotated innominate with measure longer than it actually is from the ASIS, and an anteriorly rotated innominate will measure shorter than it actually is from the ASIS. To further complicate they do the opposite in stance: a posteriorly rotated innominate in stance will lower the acetabulum (hip joint socket) by as much as 4mm and if there is hyer-adaptation present for e.g. on longer limb it can function shorter i.e. a longer limb can function shorter than the actual shorter limb. An anteriorly rotated innominate in stance will raise the acetabulum by as much as 4mm and if there is a larger enough anterior orientation of the innominate it can appear functionally longer. To further complicate further an anterior orientation of the innominate can lock up the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) on the ipsilateral (same side) which will apear as the longer limb - when i fact it could actually be the shorter limb. There is a really good way of assessing your LLD using board testing. See paper by Aspegren DD, Cox JM, Trier KK. Short leg correction: a clinical trial of radiographic vs. non-radiographic procedures. Hope this helps. In summary, you will only find LLD lying on a couch if the LLD is so large you can't miss it! However, the average LLD across the planet is 4-6mm and the fine details and adaptation for it will be missed with this assessment technique. Therefore avoid!
