Bob and Brad. Both of my parents have passed so I understand what you both are going through taking care of elderly parents while helping them maintain a sense of independence. This helps them so much with their morale. Best Wishes that both of your moms continue to manage on their own for as long as possible. Please take care of yourselves as well. Sometimes that can be the hardest part but it’s very important.

As a dressmaker, I can spot when a woman (I don't sew for men) has one leg longer than the other because the torso kinks in at the waist on the longer-leg side to accommodate the extra length. It makes the fat pad on the upper back hip higher and more prominent and I have to put in larger darts on that side on pants and skirts. There is also a drop on the shoulder of that side. It's very common.
@MS-rm7qh

Yep, I have that on my right hip. very irritating for that fat pad to be there at all, and very noticeable, and totally non- existent on the left. tank tops slip off that shoulder too

I had lower back and knee pain for years. I went to a tailor who told me I had LLD, he put some folded cloth under my left leg and it was fixed. Since then I’ve worn a heel lift and it helped so much.

This doesn't give a full spectrum of what all solutions are!! I was told all through my highschool and college track career that my right let was longer. But then I figured out on MY OWN and later confirmed by a chiropractor, that my pelvis was rotated and my right hip was rotated forward making my right leg appear longer. With adjustments and specific stretching i finally got relief. After almost 10 years of a damn wedge in my shoe that was a band-aid not a solution.

I was ‘diagnosed’ with one leg longer thab the other at the age of 20. It wasn’t until I was 36 years old when, with the help of a good chiropractor doing pelvic manipulation and an exercise regime, that I realised that I shouldn’t have EVER been wearing a heel raise.

Great review and information. I broke my left femur about nine months ago. It was surgically repaired with a rod and screws. I have a significant trendelenberg gait and tightness in my hip capsule and hip adductors. I’ve been working with a DPT for several months and she mentioned that a hip length discrepancy may be playing a role in my gait. I did the measurements and came up with about a 25mm discrepancy. Based upon this video, I’m inclined to continue working on increasing the flexibility in my hip capsule and adductors, as well as strengthening my gluteus medius muscles on the injured side. This video helped me avoid excessive concern over leg length. Thank you.

I was born with an inch difference and now at 19 I’m having disc pain in my lower back on the smaller side, and my spine is slightly twisted and I wear a lift. I’ve had an x-ray and my bone from the hip down is even smaller and has less Cartledge etc. I was also born with a noticeable face difference but grew out of it. Parents didn’t really know about chiropractors and so I was crawling at the age of three until I saw a chiropractor and the next day I instantly started walking.

im 36 year old male 6'2 when i was growing during puberty my left leg grew 2 inches longer then my right ( i had x-ray measurement done). by the time i was 18 years old and i have gradually developed more and more lower back pain (among most my spine all the way to my neck,shoulders ect.) and sometimes if im lifting heavy things at work my hip will pop almost like what a rotator cuff injury feels like (like that half popped out feeling) and every step ill take for days afterwards it will pop an pop and ill get excruciating pain waves down my entire leg straight down to my foot, i have been told by doctors i can do 3 things,have my themur in left leg chopped an have 2 inches removed then have it plated back together, have my lower right leg bone (forgot name) stretched with a series of rings and wires that i crank bolts on every other day to stretch it out looking like something straight out of a hellraiser movie :/ or simply get a shoe lift but a 2 inch shoe lift is alllooooot of lift and its not a permanent solution, But anyways for now until i decide to just get my themur chopped putting me in a wheelchair for 6 months then another 6 months rehab for the muscles becoming a loose rubber band im looking into any kind of stretches that will be safe and relieve some of this pain im enduring, this is actually the first time ive searched youtube for something about lower back pain stretches so im going to try out some of these stretches you are showing and hopefully ill get some results,because as of now im in so much pain at age 36 with this i can barely do anything,i cant do the things i love like hiking, fishing, mountain biking and just generally anything that requires me to pretty much stand up anymore because of the pain i have no ambition for it and it depresses the heck out of me. I fear if i dont do something soon im going to permanently damage my hip or spine for rest of my life so i must find something or have the first operation i mentioned done at this point in my life. Ive subbed and thanks for these videos. also i forgot to mention my spine is very crooked from it and just tweaking my back one way or the other makes it pop and crack in several areas so loudly it actually freaks people out near me when i do it.I try not to do this cause i know its not good for me but its almost like a addiction now cause its so relieving once i do it pain wise.

35 years ago I went to a chiropractor: took x-rays, drew lines from the top of my hips and across the top of my knees and told me I had a 7 mm leg size difference in my left leg. Referred me to his podiatrist buddy. Today I went to a physical therapist who said my left leg muscles are usually tight, and my hips are rotated too high on the right and I have to strengthen my gluteus, and many other muscles in the hip area, to level out my hips. Claims my legs are the same length. Been seeing another of many chiropractors meanwhile. Allegedly the rotated hip issue once straightened Will help with my arch pain, and my right knee pain, it chronic right-side sciatica.. Turns out I can remember in seventh grade playing tackle football and taking extremely hard tackle that made me feel like I was leaning to the left and walking crooked. And on my right side of my body, my knee, my hip, my low back, suffering all this time because my hips were off and bio-mechanics could have addressed it? I have seen probably six different chiropractors but it was a physical therapist who told me there’s a solution I was about to go see a podiatrist because a 7 mm lift on my left leg relieves a lot of the pain and makes me feel balanced, but now I have to relearn everything including how to walk properly.

The only way you can know for sure if you have a short leg is to get your doctor to order a CT Scanogram of your legs and hips. You want measurements of the bones of both of your legs and also find out if you have any problems with your hips (dysplasia for example but there are many others) that would be the reason for the difference. I had chiropractors, pain doctors and physical therapist tell me that my legs were even and it was my muscles that were creating the difference when in reality, the CT Scanogram revealed that I had an 8 melemeter difference because BOTH bones in my right leg were longer than the bones in my left. The CT Scanogram also revealed some hip dysplasia. Best wishes

There is a high level of confidence that placing a heel platform under one leg (creating a lab induced long leg) forces the ipsilateral innominate bone to rotate anteriorly which functionally shortens the leg (I cited a number of original research papers that all came to this same conclusion). However, an anteriorly rotated innominate bone is a symptom and the question is, standing, what forces the innominate bone to rotate anteriorly (walking both innominate bones rotate around their sagital plane.). This is what I believe to be the etiology of an ascending short leg syndrome based on several of my research projects (below cited): Two abnormal genetically inherited foot structures (the PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity and Rothbarts Foot) force the feet to abnormally (gravity drive) pronate during ambulation (Rothbart 1988, 2002, 2006): • Abnormal foot pronation drives the innominate bones anteriorly (1988, 2002, 2006). • The more anteriorly rotated innominate bone being ipsilateral (same side) as the more pronated foot (2006). • Anterior rotation of the innominate bone displaces its' acetabulum cephalad and posteriorly (Rothbart 2006). • This functionally shortens both legs and hyperextends both knees. • The resulting functional short leg being ipsilateral to the more anteriorly displaced innominate bone. I view the anteriorly rotated innominate bones as one pathomechanical event in a series of pathomechanical events, initiated by an abnormal inherited foot structure. I see this Short Leg Sydrome as one of the sequelae associated with the Ascending Postural Distortion Pattern. You can read more about this Distortion Pattern on my research website (www.IARPT.com). I found a good dentist(s) by having my teeth cleaned at local college that has a Dental Hygiene program. This is a highly sought after program with a waiting list of students and a waiting list of dentists wanting to hire upon graduation. The dentists that oversee the clinics will come by a couple times during the mouth evaluation and cleaning process and you get to know them without doing the Russian Roulette of looking in the yellow pages. I asked a particle dentist for his card and he gave me a list 6 dentists with three of them highlighted. He said he can vouch for the circled ones and that the others were probably good but he didn’t know them.

It's hard to know which doctors to listen too today. Alot of KZbin doctors are saying that leg length issues are most likely really hip/muscle issues. They say the worst thing you can do is to put a lift on the shorter leg bc your are hiking up that bad tight hip even more. They say to put the lift on the longer leg, so the hip muscles in the short leg will relax and loosen up - then the legs will be the same length.

Rather than using a simple heel lift, in my experience (orthotist) it is often preferable to add a small amount of height from the heel to the sulcus, (up to just behind the toes.) A simple heel lift can be destabilizing. Try it out yourself with both methods and see what I mean. Ending it behind the toes is just to leave room in the shoe for the toes. It should be flexible under the met heads for 3rd rocker. Of course, this all depends on space available in a shoe. Sometimes you just have to add EVA it to the midsole.

Gentlemen, I first tried a self made heel piece under my shoe. It felt as THE solution for my walking problems. MS and dropfoot!)Then I had a professional take a look and he came up with a profi made higher heel for the same shoe. After some months I did no more feel that it was better to walk with this "high heel". I think my body adapted to this spoiling and the psoas/iliacus became even shorter! So I would need a still higher heel under my shoe... and so on. Since I discovered the information ( not only yours, but also others) about psoas/iliacus and about SI joint instability, I removed the extra heel pieces and I walk on even shoes and... I do excercises to relax and lengthe the psoas and strengthen the SI joints and muscels. That feels a lot better and I walk more balanced than with that extra heel piece.

At age 40, yes, I can say this is the solution. I've been diagnosed with a "normal" (listening to these two men) discrepancy of 11mm. I've been having problems for 13 years now. They've been getting worse every year. The "chain" of problems has gone so deep in my muscles that many functions have been impacted: stomach, intestine, balls ache, diagphram... Until the dicrepancy has been discovered, one year ago. Before that, I spent so much money with therapists... Now I'm in the process of "healing"... Stetching, exercises with weights, and so on. I am, slowly, getting better. But it's not true that 11mm descrepancy it's that normal for the body to compensate, not for me at least.

@@Frank80BB Yep, I've had left sided chronic pain for 20 yrs. It started in my neck but there was slight scoliosis present and misalignment all throughout. I resisted a shoe lift for years on advice to not use one. I could barely walk in my late 20s before I started using a heel lift at first. Health professionals did not help at all; chiropractic made it worse. Heat packs help somewhat, but light to medium gym program, keep stress down (do less unfortunately), stretching esp. legs/core, low sugar and no or low caffeine seems to be the recipe.

@@JPond-wi9wv Oh My God!... You have just told the story of my life... Also my problems, tensions and pain mainly, started from my neck. Then all the way down to my back. Then back knee pain, the shorter leg one when standing up or kneeling down. Together with a rotation through the whole body. I arrived at a point when I had to leave all my sports. Also walking was a problem, and doing basic stuff at home. Also my voice has been involved for muscle tensions in my neck and jaw. Many years, many treatments, nothing. At first nobody found the leg's discrepancy, but even after the correct diagnose they insisted with treatments without lifts because they were convinced of its uselessness. 🤦🏼‍♂️ And the time passed. Until an orthopedic forced to use the lift. Legs discrepancy, the real one when bones are different in length, is a serious problem. If ignored the body accumulates problems over problems, and you do get crazy. Everybody tells you that you're stressed, you exaggerate things, etc. I'm glad you found the way btw!

@JPond-wi9wv

@@Frank80BB oh wow bro!!! Sorry to hear you're going through the same/similar thing but I am very interested in your situation perhaps as you are regards mine. You might not believe it but my actual first problem was right knee pain; everything else has been left sided. My right tibia was broken when I was four; I suspect this is a factor in my case. CT scans show my right femur is shorter. I suspect we've had some kind of damage to a growth plate above the right knee. My knee pain is fairly minor to this day, but when I was twelve I had a mini marathon race that I had trained for all year. My right knee caused me to lose so I remember it very well. I suspect we'll have some differences in symptoms but it sounds like a lot of crossovers. I had quite bad sinus issues in my late teens but that may be unrelated. I had a head tilt to the left growing up and have too many symptoms to list, but the neck/jaw pain and hip pain are my greatest concern. The hip relates to tight back muscles on the left side. Re surgery to lengthen, I have thought about it, but not too sure about it especially since 95% doctors don't accept LLI theory. Also the lift definitely helps and what the lift doesn't do is probably entrenched from years of being misaligned. I'm happy to share my stretching/strengthening routine if you want to provide an email address.

I was 11 when diagnosed with this. The orthopedist measured me from the iliac crest to the instep on both legs after a curve in my spine didn't move for over 18 months. With a lift, the spine straightened out. At the time, I was told to keep my back flexible and wear the lifts. Flexibility is VITAL in living with this even with the lift. And...it's a genetic trait in my family. I'm not the only one who has it. It's a real thing and from personal experience, flexibility and stretching well is the key. and the lifts when on the feet all day.

The reason why the lyft corrected the leg length in equality is because it might have been from that curvature but it's a functional scoliosis not an idiopathic scoliosis. Which means there is muscle imbalance involved causing abnormal rotation of the iliac bones.

2 stories. My mom had knee surgery. One leg 1/2 inch longer than the other. Told doctor. He measured and said well I'm planning on doing surgery on your other leg and then they'll be the same length. That was 4 years ago. She has 1/2 inch of extra insole in all of her shoes. Its a pain. My story... i hurt my back. Serious pain. It irritated the femoral nerve so bad i lost 95% of my left quad strength (not hip flexors). And every time i took a step my left hip hurt. Well my left leg ia actually 1/4 inch longer than right. So i put 2 extra insoles in right shoe and that pain went away. I also have 8mmx8mmx3mm disc fragment floating around in there. Leg length doesn't matter much if your ideal body weight. But im 5'11" and 330 lbs. So basically being the weight of 2 people i think has made that difference in leg length a factor. And of course a lot of back injuries are an accumulation of bad things over the years. Which is me. So if your obese a difference in leg length could become a factor in your back problems.

This accident was 14 yrs ago & now causing me much discomfort. They both told me to wear a lift in my shoe on the shorter side which is a quarter inch lift in my shoe..

I have had chronic displaced hip for 20 years that I know of could be longer. My hips now are not even. Sometimes I trip on my left foot because my right hip is higher . I can tell how much of a difference by my Shorts. My shorts will hike up higher on my right side. Doesn't matter what pair of shorts I wear.

I simply put my feet tightly together. When I do that, one knee sticks way out, and when I stand on the opposite foot, the heel of my other foot comes off the floor. That's how I can easily see the discrepancy. I should be able to stand like that with both legs staying perfectly straight.

I was interested in this one particularly because over twenty years ago Chiropractors have mentioned that one of my legs was longer than the other. I never really knew the difference and they did not tell me by how much, they just adjusted me.

Thank you for another interesting video. Do you have one on what to be looking at if the problem is being lopsided in hips but leg length not a problem? Good question. Just caught it. First off these guys are my favorite p.t.s. second thing is I'm a retired chiropractic. So I think I will be able to answer you question and prompt youto do more online research to confirm the explanation. Now an antetior hip rotation means that one hip at what is called the iliac crest the sharp ridge type shelf you can lay the inner web of the the thumb Index finger on has shifted up and forward. This would cause the leg on that side to appear longer. It is usually due to a biomechical phenomenon called subluxation displacement. This would be the result of a muscle imbalance of one or more hip muscles.as long as the practitioners went through the proper accessment and positioning of that person while they are prone-face down with the arms by their side with fingers pointed down palms up. It is best to ask that patient to turn the head to the left and then to the right. This activates a reflex in the spine that at times may coorect at least temporarily the difference if slight.The correction is usually then 2 to 3 procedures if no cjange Please note that the other leg may thus appear shorter.First the therapist exams hip and back muscles on both sides. If tight and tender they apply some thumb, hand, or elbow pressure in different directions up and down side to side and circular for a few minutes. Then stretch applied to legs including moving both legs up in down with a forward upperward equal pressure while feet souls and heels firmly and equally held by palms and fingers. If there is no change then the therapist/doctor would either by instrument or manual manipulation adjustment with the patient lying on the side with the ant. hip up thrust down.Then re exam face down. If still no msjor change then the other hip would be adjusted up. Of course the sounds confusing few this is the most basic procedure that physical therapists chiropractors should use. Schedule of more complex because their other areas of the spine in the body that can caus leg linked efficiency because of the connection between the muscle through the nervous system. Brad Bob didn't want to if the Hill lift is a simple. solution However I can tell you this anyone that has a consistent When inch leg when shortness the does not change too much when the heel of taken out. Needs to look for further if there's discomfort associated with it. They kind of alluded to that theory briefly. I hope that didn't confuse you too much. Good luck

My parents told me that when I was a baby, the doctor told them that when I got old enough to go to school I would have to have some kind of bone severance/reattachment surgery to avoid the asymmetry between my legs. I have one leg that I suspect is shorter (using the word suspect because I went to check it a few years back and the xray showed it wasn't, according to the doctor, but it still feels VERY OFF, he said I'm just imagining it but I highly doubt the pain is imaginary), but it's also thicker, and weaker in general. When I'm running this leg tires too fast for no reason, it's just weak despite being so thick. What should I do? I can't run, I can't do leg exercises, I can't walk for long distances, I can't lift heavy objects, I feel backpain when I do these things and a lower right back discomfort (where the shorter leg is), probably because I put more stress on it if it actually is shorter, but I don't know. Sometimes I feel discomfort in my chest when I try to breathe deeply while having that pain. If my parents hadn't told me about that weird story from when I was a baby I would have looked into other things and dismissed the length difference thing, but what if he saw something that the other doctors missed? How do I make sure once and for all what my problem is?

I wish I had watched this last month, before i paid in advanced for 7 sessions with a chiropractor! My left leg is short by 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. It pains my left hip when I work out, especially on the treadmill ..and doing squats is pointless because my right glute is so weak that it's impossible to build any muscle or firmness. Today I went to the chiropractor again, it didn't seem like he knew what he was doing!! He just cracked my lower back and yanked my left leg, something popped...but not an ounce improvement! The session lasted less than 10 mins! UGH!! I'm gonna cut out foam boards and even a layer of paper box and place them in my left shoe...thank you, I really hope this works!! I miss working out 😔 🏃 🏋

My right leg is 1/2" longer following a (right) total hip replacement 10 years ago. It is a real nuisance as my left shoes need to be built up or I have to have a heel raise in the shoe. Recovery from my surgery was also affected because the muscles and tendons in the right thigh had to stretch to adapt to the increased femur length. I had to use heat and massage my thigh a lot until things settled down. Not fun.

My left leg is 1.5 inches (4cm) shorter than my right, i’ve had it since birth and had a operation when I was a kid to help level out more (must have been worst like 5cm beforehand) I’ve been to the doctor many times as a kid (so many x-rays) and now as a adult I just wear a shoe lift which I got from the doctors. If I don’t wear it I definitely limp and there is some pain in my hips (knee and back) and the next day I ache. Sadly the job I have does involve a lot of walking so If I don’t wear the lift I definitely notice it.

This is a older video , not sure if Ill get a answer. I had THR Nov 4 /24 . Now My surgery leg is , what feels like about a inch longer , surgeon says no way , lol..... it is now killing my back . I have had back surgeries , and I feel like Im not going to heal as quick from this surgery. Started PT out of the home a few days ago . He said it is for sure noticable when I walk. I bought a couple diff things off amazon for my shoe. One heel riser IS a inch . It pretty much evens me out , but its not real comfy. I just ordered a gel one that you can build up in the shoe . So will this correct its self in a couple mths or so after this tight hip settles??? Like the surgeon claims? I joined a hip group on FB , and most say after a while it settles . This is awful, causes so much pain , on top of my already pain, lol. Any thoughts on what type of shoe insert would be more comfy??

I have had both my hips replaced. I was limping because of the pain. Now that they have been healed I am still limping. I have tried to correct this by being mindful of my gait. During this all I have had issues with my lower back. My goal is to become as healthy as I can possibly be. My chiro measured from somewhere on my hip to my knee on both legs and came up with a difference of an inch ... I went to a foot doctor and she did the measure with the tape but with my butt at the back of a chair she came up with a 3/4 difference. Why divide the difference in half? ... I can see that gradual change would be better ... in my case I have had some sort of issue or an other for years. One hip done about a year ago and the other the year before.

To some extent, the only reason you want to know your limit is to ensure you won't break the limit. That was why many fathers gave their daughter an alcohol test when they became an adult. Having said that, the safest (& physically healthiest) measure is to avoid alcohol completely... In that case, not much point to know the limit in the first place. Some people may think, no alcohol may make life miserable. However, that feeling itself is quite subjective, and, can be altered also. I used alcohol as an example. But the idea can also be applied to many other aspects.

I also kinda think that possible that me left leg or hip is kinda in the wrong position or I mean rotated to the right because I never done physical therapy so maybe you can help me... My balance sucks my lower left side hurts soooo bad and if I try to lean over and do a lateral stretch to the right I can feel the tight painful lower left back .... Could you please give me advise I been in pain for years and every one tells me to suck it up but they just don't understand it's like permanent punishment.... Please help .. thank you

I've had the leg length x-ray done so I'm assuming that the results are accurate (1 cm difference) and not skewed by my foot that pronates or my hips that are uneven or my scoliosis; is that right? I know all of these things are related to each other and I want to confirm the source, which I'm assuming are the legs based on the x-ray. I've put in the 1 cm lift but am having a difficult time walking; should I do physical therapy? Is it best to increase the height over time, incrementally?
