Yeah. I don't tend to make a habit of BD-to-4K upgrades - the difference is often simply not worth the expense most of the time - but DVD-to-4K is often a no-brainer. The problem is that I've already upgraded the vast majority of films that have any importance to me to BD. True Lies and The Abyss are a bit unique in that they've never had BD releases before now.

It doesn’t sound like it’s the unwatchable disaster I’ve been hearing about since December. There was also these odd images that surfaced and they are clearly drummed up fakes that people peddled to back up their biased views. I’m not sure I’ll buy True Lies, only because it’s not a top favorite of mine. But, certainly happy to hear it’s a major step up from what we’ve had. Thanks for the review… 👍🏻 Now for Aliens! 🤞🏻

That's a good score by any means. Also if some problems are inherently from the original source, to fix them can be very difficult sometimes. Own the film I'm all the physical releases including VHS, LASERDISC, DVD and the Spain very and to tell you truth they compare, and the sound is similar on all of them. Of course VHS is Stereo Surround. The volume on the DTS LASERDISC is louder.

It might only score an 8.8 …. But I remain confident this will be a big upgrade on my old Laserdisc version (complete with brief intermission to change side … those were the days!). Same with Abyss and my old copies of Aliens. In fact, I think this will mean I will (pretty much) end up with copy of every single format Aliens was ever released in. I just wish we might see a shiny new release of T2 to go with this set of movies. Sadly, I’m expecting to have to import Abyss thanks to some petty issues with some scenes potentially offending individuals of a delicate disposition … these same scenes being perfectly acceptable back in the day. That’s progress 🤐

I know why you cant do it, but as someone whose 'lucky' enough to have a "grey area" bluray release of this, I would love to see a companion between the quality, especially with all of the digital tampering. The shot of Jamie Lee Curtis's face and the Tom Arnold one clearly look DNR smoothened. It's extremely unnatural and there's barely any natural skin detail left. AT the same time, some of the other shots of Arnold look much more realistic in terms of facial detail. So, yes, it's a mixed bag, but the AI DNR method has me really worried about the fate of home releases of other movies in the future. More studios might take a cue from these releases and just DNR the heck out of their older masters to create a false "4K" image and call it a day.

I would love to see an interview with Mr Cameron about the 4K restoration process that he is involved in, particularly questions to him about why some of his movies turn out better than others when he is directly involved? You know what I video(s) would be really fun, James? If you would do quick reviews on all the current Arnold Schwarzenegger 4k UHD Blu Rays available, in print right now. You could even make it a series going in chronological order of Arnold's filmography. I would be curious about which current Schwarzenegger 4k Blu Rays are the worst transfers, and which are the best. I would love to hear your disc review on Predator, Total Recall, Commando, and others. I hope other Arnold Schwarzenegger films that aren't yet available on 4K, like Terminator, get released soon too. I would even be open to buying Pumping Iron and Hercules in New York on 4k Blu Ray...lol. I'm a fan of his films. Thanks for the honest, and thorough reviews on all these new disc releases, James. True Lies actually did get a Blu-ray release but only in Spain. In case you didn’t know. Also, for Aliens, something outdated is on the back of the slipcover and case

🙄FYI: As I talked about & explained in this video it did NOT🚫 get an official release authorized by the studio! That Spain Blu Ray release is considered a grey area release & was NEVER authorized officially by James Cameron or the studio themselves!! So that’s exactly why it’s called a grey area / bootleg release!!!👌😉 If you need more information I already explained a bit more details about that exact Spain grey area Blu Ray & my comparison to it inside this in-depth video!!👍 Hopefully this helps you understand all of this info a bit better!!🤟

1080 Disney plus version a year ago had a really nice grain structure. Looked very natural with depth and detail. They’ve actually gone backwards with this release and should have released that 1080 version on disc.

Because hdr10+ is only on Samsung tvs Lg and Sony don't have it Sony and lg are pro dolby vision

HDR10 and Dolby Vision are the dominant and preferred HDR formats from the majority of studios. HDR10+ is basically an imitation of Dolby Vision created exclusively by Samsung, to prevent from paying Dolby Laboratories the licensing fee to implement Dolby Vision on their TVs.

How could you have purchased the VHS from Blockbuster when they went out of business in 2014? By that point, they stopped renting out VHS as that format ended production years before. Maybe you meant you obtained a VHS copy from Blockbuster well before they went out of business 🤔

@ForEternia Do I remember the exact date I purchased the movie. No. I just remember having picked up some movies at the going out of business sale. Maybe I rented it as a VHS but bought a DVD. Who knows. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast sometimes. Yes, I still have a VHS player and tapes. I can't always find some of my favorites in disc form. The price I pay for some of my odd movie choices.

At the 13:20 mark the comparison of the two images appears that his head is more narrow on the streaming version vs the 4k disc. Sort of like the difference between the early Event Horizon Blu-ray and the 4k disc or is it just a optical illusion?

I have heard some concerns about the possibility of AI/AI upscaling being used in these 3 new Cameron 4Ks (Abyss, True Lies, Aliens) and that that might not look the best or cause some issues. What are your thoughts about that?

It's not necessarily "upscaling" that you've been hearing about. The AI implementation that has everyone upset over is about DNR. In his review, when he talks about digital artifacts, "shimmering," etc- DNR is what he's referring to, and even though he gave this a higher score- based on the screen grabs he showed, the one that have been leaked all over forums, and based on his own descriptions, it sounds like this looks like an absolute s***show visually.

There isn’t DNR here this is something entirely different. You would lose detail w/ DNR that’s not the case here.

Part of it most certainly is DNR, but you're right and that's not the whole picture. I forgot to mention that it's also Sharpening. Those two AI implementations are why this movie looks like s***.

Mate I respect your reviews immensely so don't take this as skepticism, but im just genuinely shocked at those digital stream screenshots. They are terrible! It can't really have been that bad can it?? They look like some early HD rips I 'acquired' nearly 20 years ago that were 4gb hd movies compressed with dvd era codecs... Like back in the bad old days where you had to DNR the every loving **** out of something to get it to compress on to a CD...

What about the DNR? There were more than a few scenes in the digital version that were so smoothed-over they looked like cheap CGI, like a Playstation game graphics, usually most noticeable with Schwarzenegger's & JLC'a hair...

Well looking at the comparison shots, the digital version DOES looked DNRd to all hell, but the disc images do not. they look night and day better. He said it wasn't a T2 like release

This was one of my most played Laserdiscs, the director approved Pan and Scan version !!!!! So what we have here now is a Director approved AI scrubbed version with some of his software killing the picture quality ?

If the Spanish release is considered a boot, it’s a high quality one. The 4k seems to get it right in some areas, but in others it’s full on DNR waxworks. All of Cameron’s old work looks like Avatar to him now. Mentiras Arriesgadas siempre! I’d rather have a copy where that film looks like film. They Michael Bay’ed the color on the 4k which makes sense since that film was a Bay spoof to begin with, but I’ll take the one that looks closer to my experience in the theater

It isn't The bootleg is from a crappy TV recording the static isn't film grain static because they didn't use a 2k print The only way to get a real hd quailty verison is the latest release

It's sharper. I bought it. But its still a problematic image. Those faces and her arm in the one shot is not natural looking. It's what we're getting.
