Thanks for showing support for performing arts kids! 34:39 I did marching band all 4 years of high school, and it teaches just as many if not more lessons than some other sports. The level of dedication and commitment it takes to perform at the highest level makes us who we are. So so happy you made that group of your listeners feel included ☺️

In marching band I played trumpet for 3 years and baritone for my senior year when I had to get braces that fall. Primarily a trumpet player but my favorite show was from my junior year when we did HERO, a tribute to any and all kinds of heroes whether they were personal, medical, military, or other branches of emergency services

Former band kid here! I was drum major and used to do 3 a day summer band and had practice every morning before school and evenings after school. It’s a LOT. For my district (or it might be a Texas thing) it’s a big deal that they consider band a sport. It’s a lot but it was super fun. It teaches discipline and real world skills on top of musicianship, being a performer, and heath. I would recommend any parents or students to give band a try!

In high school, my band camp was INTENSE. We did four weeks of camp, starting with eight hour days and ending with 14 hour days. It was a blast! We didn’t have a practice field, we had a parking lot. My high school used to be known as the “giant killers” because we would have this tiny 2A sized band knocking 4As and 5As out of the competition. I miss marching band greatly 🥲

I was capt of the drum line for two years, and being in band from 7-12 was like having a other family. My school was 7-12 so we all grew up together with the same director. They were there when I was dealing with my anorexia, and all so supportive. I won this big solo contest for marimba in the state and it was a big deal. All of our homecoming queens were in the band.

I do appreciate y’all talking about the arts, as someone who was in marching band and the drum major my senior year, I didn’t like how Lauren said band wasn’t a sport. It most definitely is, we had two weeks of band camp where we would be out side in the Georgia heat from 7am-5pm Monday-Friday, we never had an off day, we had competitions on Saturday, we had to learn an 8 minute show with body (dance) and they a horn and move all over the field at the same time. So not only is it a physical sport, it’s also a mental sport. We even get letters after our first year because of how hard the sport was. We had football player do what we did once a year on a Saturday (head coach would make them so they would stop talking bad about us every year) and what they did was so hard, some would throw up and at the end the all walked out saying marching band was hard. Btw our football team when to state 6 years in a row and won 2 years in a row.

The band section made me laugh because we have 2-6 day weeks of 10 hour band camp starting July 31, then before school each day we have 1.5 hours of band. Plus the competitions each weekend for a month, and all of the time outside for practicing😂it’s a lot of work to be in band!

I will be a senior in August. My school has variety of clubs. My freshman year I did not do anything since it was the covid year and most of the school was online. My sophomore year I joined BAB which is my school's club for community service. My Junior year I continued with BAB and joined HOSA (medical honor society) and even won a medical reading competition. Now as a senior I want to continue in those 2 clubs and hopefully join NHS and the French club.

I was in band from 3rd grade-12th grade. I went to a high school that had a huge music and art department. I could go on FOR DAYS about my experiences in band. We had a two week "band camp" for marching band at the end of August, and rehearsal every day after school from September - October. It was very intense. But fun. At the school I teach at, we also have an E-Sports club. There is also a rocket club where all the 6th graders can learn how to build little rockets and they launch them at the end of the year. I am hoping to start a true crime type club at my school this year, because I noticed a lot of students have an interest in that.

My freshman year, I was one of the very first kids on my school's speech team. For group speech, my team was composed of my brother, his best friend, another friend, and me. I was a sub on the team so I wasn't even supposed to perform, but I did and we had such a blast. Then, one of my friends and I were the only two to do individual speech. Two years later, we've both gone to state two years in a row and this year our improv team (just me and my friend, because everyone else graduated) went to state too. Speech is one of probably ten extra curriculars that I'm a part of, and it is by far the one I love most.

I didn't do many sports but for a few years I did Ballet, Tap and Gymnastics (never got to the bar part of things). The place I went to do it, did a 2 yearly show, and in 2000 someone told the owner to send in the video from the show for the chance of some of us to dance at His (her at the time) Majesty's Theatre in London, and me, along with 4 other groups from the dance school I went to got chosen. I'm a massive musical addict and adore Phantom. Being surrounded by the set pieces, the costumes, getting a peak at the mask was the best experience ever, and I still haven't actually been and sat in the audience, just danced on the stage.

Last year my school had the worst football coaches! The team was nothing but behavior issues. A few of the boys were caught stealing packages off porches. A home owner posted ring cam footage on Facebook. In the comments of the post there were a bunch of people replying hey that is so and so they go to the middle school. Then you see the coach chime in saying he was handling the situation and going to have the boys go apologize and do yard work for the guy! I was LIVID. This coach had no management skills, he hosted a lock in and the boys were out of control and they trashed the gym. The PE teacher confronted him about the mess and all he said was oh they wouldn’t clean up. Like realty Bro!

I love helping out with sports and extracurriculars. I was a volunteer assistant coach for tow different schools for a couple years and a volunteer alumni assistant at my high school for several years. However since the fall of 2022, there’s been a growing problem in my district. So many extracurriculars have ground to a halt because of county politics. More specifically, it’s literally devolved into people left and right backstabbing and pulling all sorts of ridiculous BS tricks in order to get to the top. Head coaches throwing their assistants onto the fire. Assistant coaches and head coaches having heated arguments in front of the kids. The schools blaming the coaches for things that we cannot control. Two of my coworkers and myself were cut from the staff of the team that we helped so much by the new head coach who refused to even meet me. That’s an asinine and illogical thing to do for someone coming in who is completely new to the already long-standing program. It still makes me so sad and angry that I am now out of coaching and there are no more discernible opportunities in this district.

I am president of Creative Expressions club at my school in Nevada! It started as Creative Writing but I wanted to provide a space for students to express themselves in whatever way works best for them. This year, it will include writing, art, music, dancing, and planning events like show cases and dances. Now, it’s been built up to helping students becomes more active in the student body and school events, while teaching them how to take steps out of the comfort zone and achieve their dreams with no apology or fear. This year, we plan on doing a Horror night where they will show off their finished project (first one of the year!!) and be able to enjoy a night of Halloween fun with the parents, family, teachers, students, and friends. Wish us luck! It’s my senior year, so I hope to make enough of an impact that future students feel free to be unapologetically themselves.

I absolutely love your show! As someone that primarily listens on apple podcast I have found that recently the “ads” that are put in have been put in in such a way that some of them will cut in right in the middle of someone talking. This is something that has made me want to move away from your show. Is there no way to work with them and come up with a way that works for ads and your show? Again, absolutely love what y’all do and love the show!

I’m in Marching Band. My favorite memory was us girl clarinet players had our own bus because there was 35 of us. we would put the windows down and scream music if we won. most of the time though it is late like 11:30-12 am so we went to sleep and we’re silent. I just finished band camp and it was horrendous. It was 110 degrees and our air conditioning was broke. Band camp is no joke at all.

One year when I taught 5th grade, instead of “Study Hall/Interventions” on Fridays each teacher had a Club. Kids could sign up for what they wanted. I had a crafting club and it was a lot of fun and it was something we looked forward to. We got a new principal the next year and they decided it was a waste of “academic time”.😢

I was in my school’s tech crew last year in 8th grade. It was so fun! I was a runner for a while and then they promoted me to doing the lights. In the 6th grade I wanted to join the girls volleyball team. We were told that if we wanted to join but our grades weren't good enough to participate to join anyway and we would have 6 weeks to raise our grades so I joined. The 6th grade math teacher saw me in line for the volleyball team that first day and asked what I was thinking because I would never bring my grade up for participation (math was the only subject I had a bad grade in because I wasn't turning in my homework). He pulled me out of line and sent me home. Soured me on sports and him but not math. At the age of 45 I still get upset when I think about it. I found my niche in the 8th grade when I joined choir and stayed in it until I graduated.

Did the basics if I am being honest: swimming, baseball, basketball, band, jazz band, freshman house, sophomore house, and cooking. Though with sports and clubs today, there is no accountability for the horrible behavior. If the coach needs you they will keep you around and make excuses. Parents need to chill out about sports being a kids life, back up plan is always needed. Final note: esports should only be a club, not a actual sports team. Pro esport players say that they are not athletes and shouldn’t be looked at the same standard as others❤
