This particular story isn’t true. But like all celebs I’m sure he’s had some creeps write him. He said Dido’s song inspired him to write this. When he first heard “thank you” it immediately made him think of an obsessed fan. You know between this song and some of the lyrics in The Way I Am. It always made me think Em always felt some kind of way about his fans and his fame. Like once he had it all he didn’t want any of it. Could be wrong. Great reaction 😊

Eminem has not revealed if this is a true story or not (not that I have read or heard), but "Stan" has entered the lexicon as a term for an overly-obsessed fan of someone or something and is used colloquially to express fandom of all kinds. The sample from Dido is what really sells this song for me.

This let people know Eminem was here to talk real like no one else in his field ever had. Anger, tears, pain, fear; all of it was an open book for him and he was going to spill his heart for you. It is a powerful thing when someone is truthful with their listeners on that level. When you see the humanity in your heroes, they become that much more real and relatable. You create and attachment that makes us actually feel for them. There are many that achieve this but the one that pops into my head in a weird way is Robin Williams. I never knew him beyond his performances and interviews, but to this day I cannot watch his movies after he died. It hurts too much because I felt like I lost a family member in some strange way. Eminem creates that same bond in his music through his honestly and candidness.
