TRUE STORY. This video IS NOT ABOUT THE PRICE OF A GUITAR! Today a great guitar can be bought at ANY PRICE. This happened a long time ago and was just a joke between sales guy and customer, so don't take it too seriously. There were better guitars available for $100 but the store that I worked in chose to carry a piece of UNPLAYABLE garbage and sell if for $100.

Glad you clarified in the comments about that particular guitar, and not the price. low retail priced modern guitars are often CNC built to better tolerances than top end guitars used to be. Difference comes down to set ups. A good set up can make a cheap guitar play like a midrange or higher. Adjust truss rod, tweak nut, drop saddles, adjust pickup heights, tune up to the note not down to the note for good stability, use an electronic chromatic tuner. I have fixed $1000 guitars that shipped from branded factories with uneven frets (fret level required) while a $100 unit had perfectly level frets.

You are so right! Bad guitars came in to our store all the time in ALL price ranges. I worked for a Mom & Pop store(not a franchise) so when one was bad, we just sent it back and got a replacement! The big box stores don't do that. They just mark them down and sell them when customers return them! Thanks for watching and for the very informative comment!

EricBlackmonGuitar Eric, I haven't owned my own guitar but I have been playing awhile at school and at my friend's house, I can read lots of chords and play them and scales and such, would a 90$ davison electric guitar off of Amazon be worth the purchase or no? I what's considering a fender squier but my birthday's around the corner and I can only afford the Davison e guitar, your thoughts and opinion?
@DMSProduktions
@DMSProduktions 7 жыл бұрын
You GET what you pay for. It's probably OK, but will need much set up work to be really playable. You spend $90, but then you will need to spend another $120-200, of set up work by a qualified luthier. MIGHT be better to spend that ~$300 on a better guitar. IF you are really ON a budget, GO to Guitar Fetish, they have very good acoustic and electric guitars for not much more. And they will be much better set up out of the box than a $90 big box move sale on Amazon. Good luck.
@EricBlackmonGuitar
@EricBlackmonGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
Hi David! Buying a guitar for $90 is only risky when you don't know what you are getting. I just bought a guitar for $45 that is great, but I got to check it out before I bought it. I ordered one online for $100.00 and had to return it because is was totally unplayable and unfixable. It wound up being a waste of time. I know it can be hard, but try to buy something that you can see, touch and feel. It will save you a ton of time and grief. Thanks for watching! Here is the story on that guitar! kzbin.info/www/bejne/poi6h2uGe8lonpo

store owner: "you cannot say that a guitar is bad. no matter how bad it is." why would they even keep those guitars in stock?
@EricBlackmonGuitar
@EricBlackmonGuitar 8 жыл бұрын
Money. They got those guitars for practically nothing. That is why they were worthless. They were in stock for people who could not afford better guitars(ever heard the term "affordable" which really means "crappy"?). The sales guys tried to tell him not to stock them, but our advice fell on deaf ears. I am just glad to now have my own business and don't have to put up with it anymore! Thanks so much for watching my video!

The guitar that the customer wound up buying was a great one, and probably worth more now than he paid for it. That is the beauty of buying a really good instrument, whether you are beginner or not. It appreciates in value. Crap just gets more worthless. Thanks for watching!

I worked in a music store years ago (family business), similar thing happened except it was cheap violins, they weren't just cheap but playable as some would be but they were trash. Family wouldn't listen when customers who'd bought them kept bringing them back (no shit every single 1 of them was defective) until the owner had a customer bring 1 back n he had to deal with it. The fingerboard snapped off n dropped on the floor as he was tuning it. As for why they sell them there are many who can't afford or won't pay more than $X (whatever amount in their mind). They may want the american made gibson or fender but its waaay outta their budget. Real problem is not all cheap guitars but those that really are crap.

Years ago I did a little work for a music shop M********. They sold Satellite guitars 6 on the side headstock style. Kid comes in wants the guitar, but 3 on each side. I told him that Crymbles did that style. The same guitar, just different headstock. I suggested he and Daddy went and bought that guitar there. So they did. Boss was furious, you should have offered him a discount etc. I said but he’d always have wanted the other one … Boss was angry. 30 minutes later, the kid and Daddy return to the shop with the Crymbles guitar. They then bought bought a VERY expensive valve (tube) amp there in M********. I asked them why in front of the Boss. Because you didn’t lie to us … The truth is the way!

You are right. All that stuff just confuses newbies. You can educate customers over time about those things. This is why I had a problem with selling customers the cheapest thing that we had in the store. After they return to the store and talk with a sales guy a few times they start asking "why did you sell me this piece of crap??! I did everything that I could to make sure that players were happy with what they purchased. Customers always return to the guy that meets their needs. That's how I got to be top sales guy. The other guys tried to get there with volume. Didn't work out for them. Thanks for watching Kevin!

I'm glad I read your comment. I thought something was wrong with my ears! I normally don't touch guitars that are over $799, but II was curious to find out what the difference was since I always see people in guitar center playing them. I didn't hear anything different. Some project more, some have more low-end, and some are brighter, but like you said you can find any one of those that you desire at $400.

I have found the same thing to be true. They tend to need more TLC to get them up to potential but after that is done it is a matter of vanity and nothing more. LOL not that, that is wrong. Hey I have a 3k acoustic that turns heads, but honestly, I spend more time playing my YEP $ 400 Guild with some upgrades. 😽👍

I spent about $500 on an acoustic a few months ago, not a brand I'd ever heard of, but man did it sound better than any Martin or Taylor in that price range. I don't know how their more expensive ones are but brand does not mean a damn thing as far as I'm concerned, and I ain't paying for a name.

a $1000 is out of the price range for a lot of people, and a $100 guitar can be discouraging, especially for a beginner. I think Seagull, Cort, Teton, and some other companies make good guitars in the 200 to 500 range.

Let me tell you a little story. There was this young man. He was poor as the day is long. He couldn't afford an expensive guitar. So, he had to take what he could get. After saving up his money, he bought that cheap guitar. He learned how to play on it. He learned about the parts of the guitar and how to take care of it. And then, after a while, he joined a band. Then, the band got famous. His playing skill made him famous. Oh, he has many names: Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Eddie Van Halen - the list goes on and on and on. So, before you drop your drawers and take a steaming dump on that $100 guitar like you just did in this video (figuratively), you might want to think about that. That $100 guitar could make you MILLIONS upon MILLIONS.

The same story happened to me. I now own over 100 guitars. But it could not happen with the one in this story because it was worthless. Or you could get frustrated with the shitty guitar and give up like 90% of people. You're just using an exception as an argument. Plus, a $100 guitar back in the 80's would be like $300 now and at that price you're actually looking at decent guitars.

When I go into Guitar stores, I act as if, I know nothing! Then, I ask questions, I already know the answers to. This way, I soon learn if the sales person knows his/her stuff, or are just trying to sell a product they have no passion for in their life. Granted, some guitars are better than others, but an expensive guitar will do nothing but collect dust, if you don't know how to play. I always try to tell people, first buy a quality used guitar and see if you have the passion to stick with a practice routine. If, after a month or so, it ends up in the closet collecting dust, sell the guitar and get your money back. You have lost nothing, but you have still not learned to play guitar. Peace!

Hi Rockbay! You are so right! I sometimes go to stores with my students to help them find a suitable guitar. 100% of the time, a salesperson would try to do a selling job on us. We basically tell them to get lost, we will let them know if we need them. I had lots of repeat customers because I did not do that. I try to get students to check out used guitars(all 60+ guitars I own are used except 1). That 1 new guitar was a MF Stupid Deal Of The Day and was 70% off. Couldn't pass it up! Thanks for watching!

hi Eric, thats a great story. the punch line made me laugh out loud. i sorta have my own version; one day, 24 years ago now, i came home from work and sitting in the bedroom was a gig bag with a birthday card on it, (it was my birthday that day), and my wife was standing there with a sheepish grin on her face.. my wife didnt know the first thing about guitars, but went to guitar center and trusted in the salesman.. she told him her budget and she came home with a Sigma DM 2. not the most expensive of guitars. but ive had it now for almost 25 years and it still sounds great. not an heirloom guitar.. but ill hold off on using it for kindling for a while.. lol!! :-D

That was just a great story, with an ending I didn't expect. Right now I'm shopping for another guitar, I'm a seasoned guitar player, but piano is my main instrument, so I don't want to spend a lot on my new guitar, since guitar is more of a hobby. I'm kind of focusing on Mitchell, because my friend got a good one for $125, and surprisingly, it compares very nicely with his Martin D-28! I have a nice Suzuki, a Martin 000-18, and a couple of cheapies, but hey. I'm looking pretty much for a cutaway dreadnought acoustic/electric that I can pull out on stage and do a couple of songs with - country.

Good one. I thought u were going to say the $100 can be just as good if that's the one u like. It's about how it plays for me. Last guitar looked really good so I ignored the fact that it was a horrible playing guitar. Didnt realize it was holding me back. A guitar should melt in ur hands like butter. It should inspire u n make u want to play it everyday n make u confident in public performances. If that is not wat ur guitar does for u u may have the wrong guitar.

I worked in a guitar shop for a short time, and once had to demo a TERRIBLE acoustic guitar for a little girl and her mom...If sounded bad and played hard, and I wanted to direct them to a used but much better guitar...but the owner wanted to push these new junk "beginners" guitars...he probably bought a truck load. So I tried to play a little acoustic Jimmy Page, and the girl recognized it...she was impressed, but they left without buying...and I left the job about a week later. I don't like to sell junk.

BTW, I bought a Tele style guitar at a truckstop about 10 years ago for $100. It is a " Main Street". Bought it as a novelty because it has an American flag paint scheme. Well, at some point I took a notion and put Fender pickups in it and had new pots installed and a little neck work done along with a professional set up. Eric, darned if that old thang don't play and sound like a $1000 guitar. Thought I'd share that with you for a laugh but honest to goodness it is an absolute true story. God bless you man!

these days you don't need to spend those kinds of prices on a guitar sure you wouldn't strike something amazing like a gibson Lp custom for about $400 or less however there are brands that make amazing guitars for a small price Down in Australia ( sydney ) we have a company " artist guitars " they make guitars in china and has a " grungemaster " jazzmaster style guitar $249 AUD new and I've got one and for the price these are amazing and I really like how it plays and feels compare prices to others about that price I'd be hard pressed to find a better guitar expensive stuff is better however the line between a good improvement and great improvement isn't very big but the price difference might say different

Thats not true of all $100 guitars, I have found some very rare guitars, in pawnshops, that had no clue. For one a 1964 rickenbacher same model George Harrison played ( $125) resold within an hour for $500 learned later it was worth close to $12,000. Net a very rare color fender strat mexican made $100 , next a hand made by a master carpenter, identical copy of a Martin Acoustic made from exotic wood..Valued at $1500 bought for $125.

I once almost bought a $200 guitar that sounded better than any other guitar I've ever played including my own Gibson J-200. I didn't buy it; I told the owner what she had. To her it was just some guitar that had been sitting in her attic for over 10 years since her father died. I explained to her what a pre-war Martin guitar was (and yes, I called up the Martin factory. They said it had been made in 1935) and that it was worth thousands. The sad thing was I was just starting to date her and we broke up after one date. I don't know if she really believed me and I shutter to think someone else got a $200 pre-war Martin instead of me.

In the early 70's, when I was 12, I really wanted a guitar, so one day my father came home with an "acoustic guitar" he got at Western Auto for $10. It was impossible to tune and had an action more suitable to a high-wire act. That was firewood. A couple of years later, a friend with an actual guitar taught me to play my first song, John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." I saved up and ended up buying a Yamaha FG-180 Red Label, which s a D-18 copy, and well made. I still have that guitar, although I haven't played it in years. These days, I practice 2-3 hours most evenings, and have graduated to a small stable of very nice acoustics, plus a couple of electrics. I've just started checking out your website - thanks for making so much great stuff available!

When I buy one it takes a place in the family, a good sales point is to get personal and ask about how much they play and how long in other words find a common ground and work that.an do they plan on in the future that could increase a sale. Well I got to say you are right AND wrong. If for a $100 you gain a life long passion? Best $100 ever spent. Just like anything, when I get asked for my expert opinion in my fields, the question back is always "What are you going to use it for?" That question tells you whether you need $100 or $1000 whatever. I have a lot of $hitshow guitars that I love, mainly cause I fixed them. So for $50 you might get to learn how to do a fret job or action job etc... Good story though and TRUE!

Let me clarify. If a guitar is unplayable, you just threw $100 into the fire. I have a great guitar that I bought for $5.00, but it was not bought at a NEW RETAIL STORE. You could not buy a decent guitar at the store that I worked in for $100. They only carried garbage for that price. Other stores might be different. Thanks for watching.

FYI: Did you know that many companies don't just inflate prices for bottom line? Most merchandisers know by now that people equate cost to value. And so if I had to pick between 300.00 or 100.00, on a budget, I'd probably go with 300.00 just because of my own head and nothing to do with quality or sound.
@EricBlackmonGuitar
@EricBlackmonGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
That's right V.Z.! That's why the decent models of NEW guitars start around $300.00($299.99). The figure that customers think the good guitar should cost. Those ignore their perceptions by shopping for the best guitar I can buy for next to nothing, which is why I have a stable of guitars that range in value from $200-1500, but I only paid from $1-$200 for them all. :)

I think that the value of a guitar is directly proportional to your feelings about that guitar itself. I can be satisfied with a 100 $ guitar even if it's just scrap woods glued together... But... It's also true that a 1000 $ guitar is a fine instrument and you can eventually play it and it can can be "saved" for your future children. It depends only to the use that you want to do with your guitar: take some few lesson just to impress the girl you like, for example? Take a 100 $ guitar: when you reach your goal, you can forget about that poor guitar ;-) Would you like to be a professional musician or try to be a professional one? Take the 1000 $ one.

If you're just starting, wouldn't it be wise to not spend so much? Start with a cheaper guitar then as you get better and plan to play live, invest in something more expensive? My first guitar was about 80 bucks. Next one was about 200. Then, my current one (my baby, my heart my soul, my reason for living) was an $800 Gretsch.

It all depends on the budget of the player. Some folks have so much money that they simply will not buy a low priced guitar or anything else. If the guy's a beginner, shouldn't you have told him he's better off spending more than 100 bucks but not as much as 1000 bucks ? I spent 300 pounds (UK) on my first guitar and it's served me well but I'm on the lookout for a more expensive guitar now that I know what's what.

That's great. No disrespect. I saw people buy $5000 guitars who never played guitar before. He wanted the $1000 one to begin with, he just wanted to know why the prices were so far apart, as many customers did. He made the choice and was happy with it. One rule with sales is to NEVER DECIDE FOR A CUSTOMER. Give them the facts, and let them make their own decision. Peace.

To the contrary....take a $300 Yamaha FG830 and a $1200 Taylor 114. Turn your back & listen to them being played by Tommy Emmanuel and there is no way you can tell the difference.

If you can set it up and it does what it supposed to do, Its a good guitar. If you can't get the relief you want because of buzz its a bad guitar. Now I know how to fix that problem but any newbie wouldn't. And that problem comes with many or all cheap guitars. But it is in a lot of more expensive guitars but not as much. If you are one of the people that have had that problem with cheap ones and bought a more expensive one and still had that problem. But never figured it out. They are the ones that have bad attitudes when buying another guitar if they even do. So all the cheap bad guitars are just evil! Lol. Could of been a great musician that was cut down before they ever started. The moral to this story is, Never sell someone a cheap guitar unless you have went over it and made it playable. And if you don't do that and sell cheap bad guitars, I hope you get punched in the face and lose your business and get punished for misconduct or lying in a business transaction. Or just some good ol"fashon smash the guitar over your head!

I bought a guitar at Goodwill for 20 bucks in 1981. Took it to a Roy Orbison concert and after the show waited out back for him. He gladly autographed it. Might be worth more than 20 bucks now.

that is still considered lying. why? well, you can pass the 100bucks guitar to your children either if you take good care of it. not throw it in. its not a use and throw sh*t. the main diffrence is yes like you said earlier "The $1000 Guitar is a Fine Instrument" and i know in this story that you aren't allowed to say "bad". so just say that $100 guitar is a beginner guitar who want to start playing guitar. and obiviously the $1000 sounds better because it's made for professionals and you can feel the diffrence between $100 and $1000 after you play the $1000 guitar.anyway if youre ran out of wood in fire camp you can burn that $100 guitar. easy XD

You don't seem to understand. I saw that guitar. It was a piece of GARBAGE. We should not have been selling it. Good guitars can be found at any price. That was not one of them. It would not hold tuning, no matter what you did, and could not be made to play well, no matter how much you spent. If you passed it to your kid, they would have thrown it out into the garbage after you were gone. My daughter, whom I love very much, gave me a little guitar similar to it that she bought on an overseas trip. Because I love her so much and it reminds me of her, I will keep it always. If someone I did not care about had given it to me, I would have smashed it into little pieces to make sure no one else could be corrupted by it. Believe it or not, there is a difference between a guitar and a piece of cheap plyboard with strings stretched across it. Thanks for watching.

Hey GS! You know how it is. Better is a relative term. To me all guitars sound different. They are tools that the artist uses to bring out his thoughts and emotion with music. I have had expensive guitars that seemed OK and inexpensive ones that I thought were amazing, and vice versa. What's important is that YOUR instruments satisfy YOU. I will be posting something on this subject eventually! Thanks for watching!

Any good reputable store should have a good selection of excellent intruments. Not bad ones.So quite rightly you would not say, therefore, that an instrument that came from your store was bad. It might not be as good , in whatever sense, as another, but it's just not bad, because you are knowledgeable experts and only deal with any instrument above a certain standard.
@EricBlackmonGuitar
@EricBlackmonGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
All that sounds good, kind of like a politicians view. If I have owned that store, the crap would not have been allowed. Only good quality instruments would hang on my wall, AS THEY DO TODAY. I no longer work at that store, NEVER shop there and NEVER recommend them to the many musicians that ask, because of their dishonest policies. That is what trying to palm off garbage merchandise gets you. A reputation is only good if it is a reputation of QUALITY. Talk the talk and walk the walk. My customers deserve only the best that I can give them, and that is what they get. Thanks for watching!

Good on you Eric! Just curious would the comparison between a 500 dollar guitar and the 995 guitar have been the same?
@EricBlackmonGuitar
@EricBlackmonGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ray! When I was working in that store, the difference between a $500 guitar and a $1000 one was not that great. There were many very nice guitars to be bought for $299 - $500, but anything less might be questionable. The $1000 and up guitars were higher priced because of the brand or the frills that were added. Thanks for watching!

i spent 850 on my acoustic. the guitar sold itself just had to play it. ive had as many as 12 guitars at one point in time and ive let them all go but the one. with my experience id say the difference is the materials the guitar is made of and the amount of craftsmanship that went into building it.
