A bit late to the party with this one. but here you go, haven't played Endwalker, haven't even gotten to finish a free trial for that matter. Maybe I'm not an MMO guy but who knows, maybe I'll get into it someday and make FFXIV a Realm Reborn in a nutshell for real

They never expected the kind of success that this game had, and they couldn't just have a bunch of empty servers taking up space because managing upkeep on servers isn't cheap. Not to mention 2020, 2021, and even 2022 for that matter were all of shit show when it came to manufacturing technology in general because of covid so it was not like they could buy and set up more servers with such insane success.

Yes, it has. The newly released and revamped FFXIV: A Realm Reborn had to stop selling copies because the servers couldn't handle all of the people who kept wanting to play the game. And then there was the time where critically acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV sold out of DIGITAL copies because too many copies were being bought in such a short period of time. So yeah. This was the third time it's happened.

That was 5000+ for European data center with the most peupled world, and that not a long queue as well, in fact the issue was not the queues, it was players getting a ton of errors in a raw for like a month who's give a feeling of a 20k+ queue D: And we got the same thing on Shadowbringer (in 2019), Square didn't even do anything for their servers yet there were more and more players :(
