I owned a 1995, 300 tdi wagon 110 hardtop in Perth Western Australia where they are extremely rare.sold it and regretted selling it now ! Just recently I have come across another super rare beast 110 hardtop,this time a 2013 2.2 litre hardtop. And the timing could not have been better as this is exactly what is going to go on top,an Alu cab camper conversion due to the massive space available in the 110 hardtops. Nobody wanted HT 110s but this modification makes the hardtop 110 super desirable👍👍👍

I haven't seen many of your videos, but from what I've seen, there's a clear distinction between how you approach things and the usual camper builders! The problem solving, forward planning and dual usage ideas are typical of someone that's spent many years welding and engineering and such like. I only wish I'd learnt to weld when I was younger!

Thanks Shane that’s so nice of you to say, I’m obsessed with trying to make things easy to use and dual usage, sometimes it’s my downfall tho as sometimes I should just get on with it and use what I’ve got as it is 😂😂

i like the way that the bulkhead has only been cut behind the drivers seat. i was going to take it out all the way along with a proper kit but its only me that needs the extra legroom so i'm going to do the same as you and take out just a small portion so i can fit extra length seat rails, then leave the middle and passenger section of the bulkhead for mounting electrics to etc. and maybe going to put my diesel heater in the middle seat position and then have a vent through the bulkhead into the rear section and a vent into the drivers area for defrosting in the winter. thanks for the great content and inspiration.

Hi lift Jack, reduces departure angle, will go rusty really quickly from road grime from rear wheels, and get clogged with mud when off road. Speaking from personal experience, I had mine in the same place, and moved it behind front seats in the end as it wasn’t used an awful lot.
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
I’m gonna make or buy a boot cover to cover the actual workings of the jack so it will just be the long bar which is really open to the elements. I agree with you tho it’s not the best place but it’s the best place where I could think to put it as there’s not much space left really and I wanted to keep the weight low, I’ll see how it goes but thanks for the heads up 👍

@@truebluetravellers I would recommend you use a bottle jack with chocks if you are going to ever change the wheel, The jacking points on these can be very dodgy with hi lift jacks, They are prone to slipping, a few lads have had a couple of close calls with the lift jacks, when changing the wheel. I binned mine off and went bottle jack, my dad finally did the same thing, just goes in the battery box, under the seat. If you are going to use it for getting you out trouble id buy the proper odds and sods for the hi lift.

Very inventive and skilled work. A tight budget brings creativity 👍 question, what’s your opinion on using marine ply?
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
Thanks allegro, if money wasn’t an object then I’d use birch ply first, then marine, and then normal hardwood ply, but the prices the boards are now are ridiculous, the best part about marine and birch is there is very little voids in the boards on a cut edge so you can stain the wood and it looks good, normal ply we have to fill the edges on some bits but as we always paint the wood it’s never to much of an issue 😁

Have you done a weight audit? You are adding quite a lot of weight to the landy, that front bumper and winch for a start, irrespective of whether you are bothered about staying legal any weight you add will affect performance and MPG which you will care about.
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
Yep weight is definitely a factor that I will be keeping an eye on but it’s a trade off between as little weight as possible to what I think I need on the vehicle , the plan is to take the defender to Africa and go to some off the beaten track places so for us the winch and bar are worth the weight
@Jabber-ig3iw
@Jabber-ig3iw Жыл бұрын
@@truebluetravellers I’ve decided not to put a bull bar on for our Africa trip, mostly due to the weight, but also they aren’t needed as much as for instance Australia, just seen Grizzlynbear have removed there’s in Africa, just going to run a winch bumper, I’m even tempted not to take a winch, again to save weight, same goes for high lift Jack, too heavy and bloody dangerous. I’m torn on the winch, really reluctant to lug around something really heavy I may never use, but on the other hand the one time you get stuck you will really wish you had one, we are going to travel down the west coast and are planning to stay ahead of all the bad weather and avoid the worst roads if possible, plus there’s always someone around to give you a tow or push if needed. You think you are in the middle of nowhere but the second you stop to go bushy bushy people appear out of nowhere.😁
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
@@Jabber-ig3iw yeah that’s exactly the same thoughts I have with do I don’t I, when we did the Australia trip I put some rubbish spot lights on as I never intended driving in the dark, turned out we needed some decent ones really as we drove in the dark a few times and nearly hit some kangaroos, so that’s why I’ve gone with some big spotties on the defender, will probably turn out that I never use them and didn’t need them 😂, same goes for the bull bar, hopefully I’ll never use it but at least if I ever hit a dear or anything like that it might save us from being stranded

Nice build madame/sir… One technical question for you. Did you cut the bulkhead in the back of the driver seat..? Don’t you loose your road worthy certification with that..? Unless I’m been to hasty and you strengthen the whole thing with a bar or something else… 🤔 Greetings from Germany everybody…👋 Owner of a Landy 110 HT
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Edhardt, The bulkhead cut out was already done when I bought it and it does give you allot more leg room, I don’t think it affects the structural intergrity if anything it seems to strengthen everything up, all it is is a bit of angle iron welded into a u shape and then bolted to the bulkhead, there a link below that I’ve found where people sell something similar on eBay but to be honest it’s that simple, if you have a welder I’d say it would be really easy to make, with regards the the roadworthy certificate strangely the uk it very easy going with things like this, I know in Germany and Australia they are very strict with things like this but here we can pretty much do what we want in this regard, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221907887675?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=dMcgEXoMRUK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

@@truebluetravellers just a quick question. The link you've provided for the diesel heater is for a 8 kW version. Reading around i'm told that 8 or 5 is too high and to go for a 2kW heater. Just wondered in your experience what you would recommend?
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
@@goexploremore hi James, I think it’s a tricky one as each has pros and cons, as it’s such a small space in a defender a 2 kw is good as it’s not got much space to heat, but then defenders are terrible for heat loss due to the little amount of insulation you can fit to begin with, in a van I would insulate with 20mm celotex where as a defender only has some 10mm foam for most vehicles, add that to the fact that most door seals don’t seal properly, all the single pane glass and the fabric of the tent from the roof and it’s not very good at keeping heat in. My reason for getting the biggest was I’ll get grief if Jess is cold as we like it warm and have it on most nights, and no matter what the temp outside the 8kw should keep us warm, also it shouldn’t be running flat out, hopefully it should just tick over where as a 2kw would be working hard, I suppose it depends how toasty you want it inside to be honest mate to what to get but I can always turn a 8kw down, hope this helps 👍

@@goexploremore hi James, quick update for you on the night heater, not sure if u are aware but the cheaper ones don’t cut in and out by themselves like eberspachers do, the more expensive ones you set the temp and it cuts in and out when reached the desired temp, just like a combo boiler, where as the cheaper Chinese ones don’t, they just go into low heat mode when they hit the desired temp, so they are ok if you want to use like that but if you want to put on for overnight then it would just keep heating, also if u are intending to use on an alucab the top part of the roof is pretty sealed so if you put the bed panels down then not much hot air gets up into the top but the bottom half is toasty, just thought I’d let u know as we took it out on the weekend for a test run 👍

Guys, maybe you already have shared this bit of info, but what do you do for daytime jobs? And how much planning went into your first build in advance of actually building it? Thanks!

Hi, we are are actually unemployed at the moment 😂 we saved a pot of money and quit our jobs at Christmas to travel. We are have have quite a few questions about this and our old jobs so are going to do a Q&A video soon if that’s of any interest to you. In terms of planning for our first build, we just watched loads of KZbin videos and looked at lots of different layouts to get an idea of what we wanted and didn’t. Motorhome and Campervan shows are really useful for this.

👍 thanks, yeah I won’t run it on the vehicle all the time as I’ll probably just put it on for the big trips, I did think about maybe somehow making a cover for it too

8:17 Are you worried wind or the wife's guns swinging the back door to hard and the window hitting the tank holder and breaking?
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
Yep i do worry that she is a bit heavy handed 😂 but the window should be good, it looks very close on camera but there’s actually quite a gap and luckily the wheel will hit the body before the door would hit the gas bottle 👍

Hi John, I'm in the market for a tyre changer and balancer and I was looking at the automotech ones. I'm not sure but is that the type you have? If so what's your thoughts on it?
@truebluetravellers
@truebluetravellers Жыл бұрын
Yes mate that’s what I’ve got, pretty decent for what I need to be honest, the ramps I have are automotech too so can’t complain with the quality, I had the balancer too but didn’t really have the space for it for the amount of wheels I actually do, the only thing I would say is mine hasn’t got a helper arm which again is ok for the tyres I run but if you are doing any low profile tyres then it’s hard without a helper arm to keep the tyre from sitting in the well when fitting them 👍
@davidchase7166
@davidchase7166 Жыл бұрын
@@truebluetravellers Thanks for that, it'll mainly be for hobby use to be honest and for friends and family's tyres. I had enough of changing tyres when I was in a garage so don't want to do it commercially but hate paying someone for something I can do myself. And like you I may have a bit of a tool addiction...

@@truebluetravellers thank you for the link. We are so inspired by your Sainsbury's van build we are in the process of buying our own sprinter fridge van to allow us to go skiing. We have previously built a normal sprinter (his name was Geoffrey, a 4x4 sprinter that took us to south Africa) but had to sell that a few years ago to fund an extension. Agree the square sides and pre-installed insulation should make this a breeze compared to the Pinzgauer or a panel van! youtube.com/@thisisgeoffrey9397?si=fJ2PsbEOWzYH-Tw8 Keep up the good work, keep buying tools!
