Sheryl, you are just too lovely.:-) You're simply the best teacher there is on this planet earth and I enjoy every minute of you talking. Thanks for being there and especially for bringing focus to the music I love, which is bebop. It was about time someone does what you do now but I never would have thought, someone does it as lovely and authentic as you do. You really touch my heart with your style and manner. Thanks and peace out!

One interesting thing about Drop 2 chords on the guitar is that if you play in sets of four adjacent strings -- 1,2,3,4 or 2,3,4,5 or 3,4,5,6 -- the root and the fifth will always be next to each other and the third and seventh will always be next to each other.

I understand what you are saying but to me it sounds fuller with the bass. I even like it with just the bass and the melody.

Scales and "positions" and "boxes" are fantastically boring - They do seem to provide a good framework for connections between chord tones and good framework for seeing the neck over time...I love what you are saying here....many times, over and over I heard Scott H say, "well, you can focus on the chord tones there"...and it took a while to get it - after examining the guitar fretboard and playing for much too long, it finally hits home and you reinforce it here.

But if I'm creating melodies why can't I use a root and 5th?, even if there is a bass? What if the melody has a root and 5th in it?
@robertkahn4284
@robertkahn4284 Жыл бұрын
I'm definitely not a theory expert but I'll give you what I think to be the correct answer. The 3rd and the 7th define the chord quality. If you use just the 3rd and the 7th of each chord to play a melody without any other instruments playing the listener will be able to hear the changes. You can use all the notes to make a melody, including roots and fifths, but if you are resolving to the 3rds and 7ths of the harmony then the melodies will be more pleasing.

That's what you hire the bass player to do :) but more importantly, the 3 and 7 define the harmony
