As someone who loves both Pokémon and Madoka Magica, this comment inspired me to list my choices for what pokémon the main characters of Madoka Magica would have. This contains *MASSIVE spoilers* for the show and movies, so if anyone who sees this hasn’t watched them already, I highly advise watching them before reading this post. Before I start, it’s worth mentioning that these will be monotype teams intended to fit the characters overall, which limits my options somewhat. Most of my picks will fit the characters, but there may be some choices that don’t quite line up with the character’s traits, but contributes to the theme I’m going for with their team. I will also be pointing out specific moves and abilities the pokémon have if they tie in to the overall theme. First up is Sayaka, with a team of mostly water type physical sweepers. Her pokemon’s movesets include a lot of slashing moves, but every pokémon she has that can learn the move Life Dew will have it. Sayaka’s main pokémon (and one of the two special sweepers she has) is a Primarina with the hidden ability Liquid Voice, and the moves Sing and Water Pledge. Aside from Primarina itself tying into both Sayaka’s mermaid and musical motif quite well, its ability and the move Sing emphasize the musical motif further. Water Pledge is a move learned only by the water type starter pokémon, which if used after an allied pokémon attempts to use Fire Pledge, goes from a base power of 80 to a prodigious 150 base power, the equivalent of Hyper Beam, and creates a rainbow on the user’s side of the field that doubles the chances of move’s secondary effects triggering. The Pledge move ties in to Kyoko, as without going into too much detail, the two are highly important to each other’s character arcs. Her second pokémon is a Samurott, not much to mention here, as it mainly just ties into Sayaka’s heavy use of swords. Her third pokémon, and second of two special sweepers, is a Jellicent that knows Destiny Bond. Aside from being here partially because I was unable to find an extra physical sweeper that fit thematically or provided meaningful type coverage, it’s also here as a reference to the fact that Sayaka is the only character to become a witch onscreen in the original Madoka Magica series. Destiny Bond is significant for two reasons: it ties into the fact that Sayaka is destined to suffer in every timeline in which she becomes a magical girl, and it’s a reference to Sayaka’s witch and Kyoko dying together. Sayaka’s fourth pokémon is Gyarados, which doesn’t have much thematic relevance, it is a physical attacker that can cover some of her team’s weaknesses with Hurricane or Bounce. Sayaka’s fifth pokémon is Keldeo, one of the only legendary pokémon I’ll be giving out. Keldeo is one of the Swords of Justice, a courageous, kind-hearted pokémon, it’s personality lines up very well with Sayaka’s. As a legendary, it’s also relevant to Sayaka in Rebellion, where she is part of the Law of Cycles. I intended that Sayaka and Kyoko have main teams consisting of only five pokémon, as their sixth slots reference each other, and don’t really fit the themes of the rest of the team. For Sayaka, this additional pokémon is a Charizard that knows Fire Pledge. Again, not much direct relevance to Sayaka, mainly being picked because it gives better flying coverage than Gyarados and isn’t a pokémon I intend to use for anyone else, but it ties in to her relationship with Kyoko, both through knowing a Pledge move, and ties into Kyoko’s love of fairy tales. This was harder than I thought. There are surprisingly few water type physical sweepers, considering it’s the most common type. I will do another post covering Kyoko tomorrow, as it is currently past my bedtime, and attempting to give this level of detail for all five main characters in one post would very likely push this post well past the character limit for KZbin comments.

As I mentioned in my first reply, I was planning on covering the team I think would be most fitting for Kyoko. I need to set aside a couple of hours to give the same amount of detail as I did for Sayaka, and I ended up spending most of the day beating the second half of the Isle of Armour and grinding mushrooms to get my team Gigantamax factors, so I unfortunately have to delay that. I will, however, answer a question that my initial reply might have raised, namely: how the heck do you give Mami a monotype team based off just the original series and the three movies? The short answer: you don’t. Seriously, her ribbons are basically just represented by Sylveon, a pokémon that fits Madoka far better than Mami, and nothing else, while the only two pokémon that fit her weapon of choice that come to mind are Clawitzer and Octillery, both pure water types. So getting a fitting, functional team based off of just the original series is next to impossible, and the movies don’t add much that would help, obviously I need to use some of the manga, right? Nope, there were actually three video game adaptations of Madoka Magica, and the most recent of those makes my job _significantly_ easier. I literally don’t even need to research the story of the game, I’m pretty sure the anime adaptation is less useful to me than the game mechanics. There’s an elemental system in Magia Record consisting of five elements: one for each of the five main characters. Mami is represented by the element of wood, a simple gameplay mechanic you probably weren’t meant to think too hard about is pretty much the only reason I can give her a well balanced team here. The ribbons and weapon of choice aren’t so easy to work around, but there is a way to make a decent enough compromise: the ribbons are mainly used to grab or tether things, and the Pokémon anime has Vine Whip used in similar ways, so I can compromise by having her team have Vine Whip and Power Whip wherever I can. The muskets would seem to provide a bigger issue, but those can also be resolved through the pokémon’s movesets, and through the help of an ability added in Gen VI: Bulletproof. Bulletproof is an ability that, as the name implies, protects its bearer from being hit by certain projectile-based moves, which very helpfully makes a lot more moves than just Bullet Seed fit the theme. I’m still covering Kyoko next, but I have a biology test on either Sunday or Monday, so I might be completely out of it by the end of the day I end up doing it on.
