Carl Rydlund is the guitarist you are hearing on many of the movies you have watched over the last 20-years. Many films he has worked on with famed film composer, Hans Zimmer, all feature Carl's guitar work. Today we sit down with one of the soundtrack kings, who recently moved to Nashville to continue his film work, and to take a teaching position at the renowned music-focused Belmont University. In our interview, Rydlund discusses his musical upbringing, his move to Los Angeles, and how his work as a copyist and guitarist on Hanna-Barbera cartoons turned into the soundtrack work that has defined him over the last 20-years. Rydlund also shares very practical advice for those wanting to get into soundtrack work, and also takes a very sensible look at gear, and what one actually needs to get the job done.

Cool interview and good mindset. Glad to see someone still using a Mac Trashcan but just because they’re old doesn’t mean they don’t work. Like others and myself.

Carl! What a treat to hear your story in a depth we never get to over dinner, because we’re usually talking kids or dogs, or being funny. I think it’s true, you’ve probably forgotten more about music than most people will ever learn. Great interview!

If someone just happens to click on Truetone Lounge just to see what it's about, even if they're not familiar with the artist/guest, and after the interview they don't subscribe , well they are going to miss out on a treasure trove of info, tips, tidbits, and just plain interview enjoyment. Case in point this Carl Rydlund dude, as far as I knew he could have been Nashville's butter and egg man, boy what cool interview! as with all the others, there's that open and curious thing rearing it's lovely head! enjoyed it, thanks Zac, r0ck0n...

BEST INTERVIEW EVER! Everything (almost - but certainly some of the most important) I taught my students after years in LA and elsewhere on the engineering side of the glass. Now retired and playing guitar on the side, it all stays relevant: always be prepared and just say yes and you’ll work.

Another incredible interview that delves into the rich culture of the L.A. music scene when it still reigned supreme internationally so far as animation houses are concerned. Sage life-experience and career advice shared by Carl Rydlund, now as educator, will prepare well his students at Belmont during this fluid moment in history.

Zach, out of EVERY musician you have interviewed, this is the guy I would most like to be like. He is obviously the very definition of professional. And come on, working with John Williams AND Hans Zimmer! I wanted to ask if he had ever worked with Ennio Morricone. Who's Debbie Reynolds again?
@carlrydlund7456
@carlrydlund7456 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Douglas thank you for your kind words. I’m overwhelmed! I have not had a chance to work with Ennio Morricone although that would be a great privilege. Debbie Reynolds was a wonderful actress and singer who starred in movies like “Singin’ in the Rain“ and also happened to be Carrie Fisher’s (Princess Leia) mother.
