The star wheel dresser has those two legs to hook behind the tool rest. Move the tool rest away from the wheel to allow clearance for the dresser legs. This will give you a solid point to reference as you move the dresser across the face of the wheel and will correct an out of round condition.

idk man….. i’ve heard that before from people but i’ve never trusted wedging something down into the wheel with nowhere to go. do you have documentation or a source of info to back that up?

@@Stubbornnut Hi Blair, I agree it goes against conventional safety teachings, but check out a wheel dresser manufacturer's technique here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKLbl31qedmNqrM Starting around the 3 minute mark, they show dressing the wheel and applying enough pressure so there are no sparks produced. At the 3 min, 28 seconds time index, they show truing a wheel by hooking the tool foot over the tool rest. Also, be sure to wear a respirator mask due to the grinding dust - Former Millwright for the Timken Company.

i have done it both ways. i don’t feel comfortable teaching that way in my channel because I can’t supervise. I work with and this channel is for beginners. this type of application should be done with experienced supervision

Wow! Fantastic video. Where can one obtain the tools to dress and true the grinding wheels? You mentioned Princess Auto for one tool but are all the tools available at Princess Auto? Please mention the replacement wheels for the dressing tool as well. Thanks for the video.

This was very useful to see a manual wheel truing and dressing. The device is genius. Small and effective. Many thanks for a great demo. I can find the diamond dressing stick on Amazon easily, however, I cannot find the Truing tool you are using. Did you machine this yourself? I can find the Diamond Stick/Pencil part with the pointy diamond on top, but not the holder. Looks like a custom made holder. I'd love to get this holder. Any tips on where you bought it? fyi - 7:41 - PEDESTAL, not PEDISTAL.

A question if i may, if i wanted to make a truing tool at home could tungsten carbide do the same work as the diamond does?

diamond is a 10 mohl hardness rating. tungsten is an 8-9. therefore depending on what type of stone you are dressing you may be able to do it, however your bit will wear faster.

Yes Tungsten will also, but the best way is to use the steel masonry cutting disc on a angle grinder it gets them absolutely true, do it outdoors tho.

Wouldn't the ears of the hooded dressing tool be able to reference against the tool rest and true up the out of round condition?

I have had this conversation many times. I don’t feel comfortable teaching that because of the potential for pinch point. also it is much more time consuming to adjust the tool test. i’ve done it both ways. both work.
