Subaru rejected Rem because he prioritized her feelings over his own feelings (of wanting to run away and leave Emilia). In the novel: Softly, gently, they awaited the reply from Subaru’s lips. So he wanted to be the Subaru Natsuki she loved so much. “-I…like Emilia.” “-Yes.” Seemingly knowing all along, Rem smiled and nodded at Subaru’s confession. He knew it was an underhanded way to respond to the feelings she had offered to him. He knew he was using her emotions. But it was that Subaru, the Subaru who would not give up on the future of those precious to him, whom she loved

Even though Rem missed her opportunity to be with Subaru she knew she'd also lose the person she fell in love with. By giving up and abandoning Emilia, Subaru would end up not being a "hero" in Rem's eyes. To Rem that is more important to her than anything.

lol! That line "I love Emilia" has become a meme in itself, not only in the Re:Zero community I dare say in the anime community in general. But I must say that, despite the hate Subaru received for all the events he has been through, deep down it speaks very well of him, he is consistent with himself as a character.

True. He stays true to his heart and can't deny his heart to Emilia even though he is fully aware Rem loves and supports him. It's bittersweet really. However, there is a popular saying that "we" can't help with who we fall in love with.

The reason I enjoy watching and reacting to anime is to see what the path the MC takes and what decisions they choose. I can't hate Subaru for not choosing Rem, because if that's what he wants to do, then that's his decision. A story is well written when the viewer or reader can understand the MC's perspective and also be able to pair it with their own. Though it seems many people wanted Subaru to choose Rem, the reader also gave us a glimmer of what that life could have been as we can envisions scenes or panels based on the description.

I know you’re nowhere near there but season 3 is dropping in October and the arcs it’s adapting are PEAK. I think you’ll really enjoy this show continuing on if you enjoyed the writing and themes of this episode.

My goal is to finish season 2 in time for season 3, though I think I'm going to come up short a bit. Regardless the writing is quite refreshing compared to standard isekai and where I'm at currently makes you think. It's a very good series that I'm enjoying!

Yeah, there is a whole "What if...?" side story that tells what would have happened if Rem agreed to run away with him. Could be an anime on it´s own.

I'd watch a 12 episode "slice of life" version of this. The last episode would be Rem holding Subaru's hand as he is now old. Their children besides him, crying knowing he is about to pass, but also grateful for the father that he was. Rem is sad, and her only regret would be that she didn't pass away before him. As Subaru lays idle, he looks up at his family, vision fading steadily remember all the pleasant times they shared together. When his eyes close shut the credits begin to play. When the screen goes to black you see young Subaru again back at the Appa's stand looking confused seeing Rem to the left of him holding a basket of Appa's.

@@LykesonRose I’ve actually been publishing a fanfic based on what would happen if Subaru died at the end of a long life like that and then came back to that moment at the appa stand to continue on his journey. It’s a really fun premise to work with!

@@Prushbinger Ok turns out it was just some RE:Zero marketing promotions in Shibuya for a few years. Apparently they only ran in 2016/2017, I can't find any mention of Rem celebrations after that, but they DID celebrate Rem's birthday in at least part of Japan for at least two years.

The story would transition to a slow and peaceful life as described by Rem. If the writer really wanted to hate Subaru, he would have shown the two leaving going on to live a life together. As they grow old and Subaru is nearing his end, he is surrounded by his family. When he moves on he "wakes up" once again back at the Appas stand.

Rem is not entitled to Subaru's love just because she does all these things for him. The same way Subaru isn't entitled to Emilia's love just because he does so much for her. She's a wonderful person being there for Subaru. Helping build him back up after all the failures crushed his resolve and self worth to dust. There's no denying that. But love is such an irrational thing that you cannot control. The anime community was in a massive uproar because of this episode and its just so hilarious to me. The pure irony that the audiences shitting on Subaru for rejecting Rem despite everything she did for him are pretty much doing the exact same disgusting thing Subaru did in Episode 13. Remember what he said to Emilia back then? "Everything I've done, I made it all work out, didn't I? I saved you at the loot house! I risked my life! All because you were important to me! At the mansion too. Things worked out because of me! Without me it would have been alot worse! All of it! All of it! All of it! It worked out because I was there! You owe me a greater debt you could never repay!" Now one could say Subaru's love for Emilia isn't justified. I disagree. He has plenty of reasons to love her. She was the first person to go out of her way to save him and show him kindness when he first came to this world. She's been a consistent light for him in this cycle of suffering. No matter what.. she always believed him and did her best to support him. Subaru has been betrayed, rejected, belittled and killed by people he thought were close. Emilia was the one constant that gave him hope to keep going. She gave him a lap pillow and a safe space to vent and cry his feelings out when he was being overwhelmed by everything he went through in the mansion.

I'm a Rem shipper as much as anyone. Actually more a poly shipper 😂 I just hate when people bash on Emilia.. and Subaru himself just cos they are salty Subaru chose Emilia. She's done plenty herself to gain Subaru's affection. Its even more beautiful because she didn't do it to gain his love. She has noo clue she affected Subaru that much

There's already a harem with Rem and Emilia You can't say its not a harem because 99% of harem anime have waifus that don't have their feelings reciprocated. You can't say "its different since Subaru already has a main girl!" because other harem anime have main girls who have already been chosen. For example, in Nisekoi the MC already has a girl he wants to confess to, despite other girls who get in the picture. Harem isn't this "specific type of harem anime". There are multiple types and you would be wrong to say there's only one type just to fit your argument
