Truly Criminal

2 жыл бұрын

On October 3rd, 2008, Gilles Tetreault, was driving in his car, following some cryptic and mysterious directions that would lead him to a garage in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was supposed to be meeting a lady named Scheena. But, as soon as he reached the garage, he realised Scheena didn't exist and he had to escape...
..Just weeks later, a man named Johnny went missing under the name circumstances.
What police uncovered, left them truly shocked.

I’m so glad nobody is blaming Johnny. What he was wearing. What was his reason for going there, what did he want. Why he went to a place with only directions and no address given. Why he would agree to meet a woman who was pushing for a meeting. Did he ever meet dates like this in his past. Why didn’t he take any steps to ensure his own safety. Did he have anything to drink. Did he ever take drugs. Why would he go into a dark garage. Why didn’t he take proper precautions. Blah blah blah. It’s reassuring when ppl can truly believe that he was an innocent victim. It’s a beautiful restoration of faith in humanity when ppl can express that refreshing level of empathy and compassion for a victim. R.I.P. Johnny.

Online dating can be risky. Always meet during the day in a public place and, women in particular, have a friend call you 15 minutes in so they know you're okay, and also to give you an excuse to leave if the other person is creepy. Also, do background checks beforehand and don't give out your address. I'm a guy and used to do a lot of online dating and years later I realized I'd done some dumb, risky things where I could have been catfished and robbed or murdered. You can meet some nice people online. I met some great ladies. I even met my ex-fiancee and we're still good friends. But she told me she'd done background checks on other guys before she met me and caught a couple of creeps in advance. One of whom was a sex offender. Another woman told me she'd done a "meet" with a guy who later turned out to be a rapist. This doesn't mean you shouldn't use dating sites. But it's all in how you go about it. Keep a healthy sense of suspicion until you get to know the other person. Take care, everyone, and thank you to the ladies who post this series. Probably the best true-crime channel on KZbin. No dramatic music or hype or interviewing people and waiting for them to cry. Just a good, informative program that, as others here have observed, gives due recognition to the victims, not just the criminals.

This goes to show, it's not only women who are potentially at risk on dating sites, men are potentially at risk too. Arrange the first few meetings in public, for coffee, then for a meal in a restaurant. Not in a bar, because something like Rohypnol can be dropped in a drink and even if not, your defences will be lower after alcohol. Stay safe everyone.

When I first heard about this case years ago, I thought of the absurdity that he's being compared to Dexter. I was a fan of Dexter and there's not even a smidget of likeness between this idiot and Dexter. Dexter only murders criminals, this idiot murdered an innocent man. @@pinkfluffydino8217 Gilles has written a book about his ordeal. I'm glad he did. It's probably very cathartic. I think victims should tell their stories of survival and in this case, he would have given Johnny a voice as the other victim. These were both good young men and it's horrible they were lured into a death trap by a diabolical killer. And 20/20 is hindsight but I wonder if the couple who'd witnessed Gilles emerging w/injuries & pleading for help but just turned around and walked away might have influenced Gilles' decision not to report the crime. Perhaps he thought no one would believe him. There'd only been 7 days between the attack on Gilles & Johnny's murder so Gilles may have still been in a state of terror. . It's completely understandable the couple may have been suspicious and concerned for their own safety when confronted w/the scene but to walk away and not immediately go home and call the police is really pathetic. In the very least, that's exactly what they should have done!

Men getting catfished usually feel extremely ashamed as they’re most often victims of cruel elaborate pranks rather than deranged sexual crimes. Given that this was 2008 and there was still a huge stigma about online dating that has only somewhat subsided recently, I’d imagine those two factors made him deeply embarrassed. And given the nature of how he described the tussle with Mark, as well as the gun being fake and him wearing a hockey mask like some sort of movie villain, he probably thought this was some amateur asshole just messing with someone rather than an actual killer.

I think the most appalling thing in all justice systems is the continued allowance for inmates to seek love or connection with the outside world. Under no circumstances should they be allowed to marry or talk to anyone outside prison walls. And access to shows that showcase criminal activity should be banned. My uncle was murdered and the bastard who did it not only laughed in his face as he shot him, but laughed when he retells it, too. But he's free to go and get married? Which he did two years ago? No. That's NOT okay. What kind of justice is that for us? My uncle will never have that opportunity. Marriage is a privilege, not a right. Dating is a privilege, not a right. Communication is a privilege, not a right. Beyond that, they forfeit all rights to happiness and its pursuit when they take someone's life. A life for a life. I don't care if that means that they rot in a cell, or they get the death penalty, but they should NEVER be allowed out and should not be allowed to communicate with the outside world. Not ever, and not by any means.

@@ltee2261 I wholeheartedly agree. Did you hear about that bs where a woman inmate (I forgot who) tried to be granted an appeal or have her sentence lessened because she felt it was inhumane that her sentence put her in jail passed a time of fertility for women? I mean, come on! What kind of idiocy is that? You did the crime and you need to suffer the consequences. Just because you started wanting children later doesn't mean that you can just say "oh, sorry I did that ten years ago, but I want kids now, so can you let me out?" So insensitive and offensive and outrageously arrogant. It's just more abuse piled onto the victim's families. It really is. I wish the courts saw it that way.

Just want to say that I am a true crime super fan. Came across your post and was sceptical, as I have watched some not so good videos, including those from professional psychologists (obviously just my opinion, but I find the voice and delivery really important) I have been truly impressed with your videos... Great delivery, well thought out narration and very informative. You are not overly sensational, and the footage adds another dimension.. I enjoy listening as a podcast, and when I have time, watching as a documentary. Thank you for posting such high quality material And good luck to you. You deserve a lot of recognition

I'm only 50 and yet I can remember a time when school shootings and surreal crimes such as this where even beyond our available extreme reading material. I hope society takes time out and soon to investigate what on earth is going on now with daily cases which appear to be trying to out perform the previous! Take stock please people or this godless extremely inhuman behaviour will surely impact on ourselves and ours. 🙏

I mean, it's clear that Mark has a massively overinflated sense of his own competence, but I wonder how it feels to be those police officers, first deeming him honest and not-a-suspect after questioning him; then walking him around town, alternating between impotent threats and begging him to tell them where the body was... Like, I would feel awful if I was that terrible at a brand-new hobby, let alone my actual job.

This monster is in prison expending his time trying to become a better filmmaker instead of working to cover his expenses. I mentioned on this vlog (which happens to be my favorite) and in many others like this one, that the best society can do with these people is to put them to work , as soon as they arrive at their "new accommodations" (starting with the minimum wage of the land) and encourage them to upgrade themselves through study; basically what most of us do without being in prison. We allow inmates to work menials jobs (with all expenses included) to enable them to buy snacks,TV sets and other perks. Aside of that ,we paid for their education (Karla Homolka got a degree on psychology while in prison out of our taxes). Add to that the cost to run a prison with central heat, air conditioned, libraries and computers, food, clothing, medicine and who really knows how many other things. At the same time we give pensioners like myself a maximum of Can$15.000 a month to make a living in a country where a 1 bedroom apartment doesn't cost less than a Can$ 1000 (in a very sketchy area, that is). In the very likely event that one doesn't have a private pension, one is screwed. What the Brits call "Benefits", in here we called it "Welfare" and it doesn't amount to more than Can$800 for a single person who must be living on the streets to qualify for it. This derailed creature is going to be out of prison by the time I reach my 80's (if I can make it) with a career paid by the very people he was murdering. Funny eh?. Greetings from Toronto.

I really like this KZbin channel and I’ve never had a complaint about the story telling and the compassionate way you respect the victims. However, I really had a hard time understanding what was being said during the interview. I tried the close caption but it didn’t translate very well. Would you consider adding subtitles to the interview part? This one was very hard to hear what they were saying with the echo in the room. Otherwise, very well presented.

In Canada, Life without Parole means he is eligible for parole in 25 years and then he can start to apply usually every year. Stranger things have happened in Canada than this creep making parole one day... IMO it would be a nightmare for Johnny's family reliving the grief of this nightmare.

If he feels like something is off AT ALL or just doesn't like the look of location or WHATEVER .. he sends me a quick location shot so i can at least have a starting point IF anything was to ever happen! .... And its sad .. That THIS is what our world has come too by 2022

He loved Dexter so much even to the point that he calls himself Dexter yet he's clearly forgotten the whole story of what & who Dexter really is & why he does what he does. This idiot kills innocent people for the sake of killing whereas Dexter only killed serial killers that the law couldn't catch. Think he needs to research Dexter again & study the whole concept more closely. If Dexter saw this man Dexter would kill him it's that simple really
