I still remember once when I was 12 ~ 13 years old, a man - older man - started paying attention to me and it made me very uncomfortable and embarrassed. My parents thought it was funny and would tease me about my 'boyfriend.' I cannot even put into words how furious it makes me now when parents find it amusing that their adolescent children are upset when someone makes unwanted sexual advances. It's not funny when that happens, people. Just look at how this turned out. That poor, innocent girl.

I was about that same age when a family friend starting making inappropriate comments to me, things like washing my back for me when I went to have a bath, washing my hair, etc. This was all done in front of my parents, but they didn't think it was out of order. Because I was already considered "too sensitive" by my parents, I never brought up my feelings about it to them. I still remember how I felt, though, some 50 years later...

Absolutely right. I had to learn that the hard way myself with my daughter and a "family friend" being a low life scumbag. I caught a different type of feeling about it one night and I actually came out and asked if there was something that I should know about and was told "not at all" even whenever I pointed out that I had a real strong feeling in my gut that something was wrong. Whenever the facts were exactly what I started to feel the night I had asked about something going on. Well I'm here to tell you, that was going at the situation all wrong. Instead of just doing what I thought needed to be done and being done with it; I asked him and her that night and they both lied to me. The very next day the whole situation was exposed for the truth about what was happening. I was just a fool 100 thinking that I could give another man a little bit of slack in the rope I should have had around his neck from the very first day that I was introduced to him. The more I have thought about it I really don't think that the 5yrs that he was sentenced to prison for is anywhere close to enough. Irregardless of how it went down or if they both were lying to me whenever I had confronted them both or not. 27 - 15 is nowhere near acceptable to have happening. Especially when the difference in ages is only 3 years of difference in her entire life 15yrs with a 12 year difference between them. How tf can he still look at himself in the mirror without being sick? I guess since a child allowed it to happen or in my eyes even encouraged it; that POS doesn't see where it was ever wrong. Smgdh

Overall "explored" as in questioned/investigated further to see if there needs to be something reported to the police and provide your child with medical/psychological help. Children may not say anything because they're scared or embarrassed but asking them could bring out things.

There was definitely also a societal expectation, even as recent as 20 years ago, that family ties should take precedent and you shouldn’t “rock the boat” without clear evidence, allowing a lot of sexual predators to act without restraint towards their victims. I’m glad there’s been a normalization more recently on acting on that gut feeling and not resisting burning down bridges due to “well, they’re family”, and I hope we continue to see trends in that direction because people are most often abused, manipulated and assaulted by those who should protect them.

They keep the location of the body a secret because that way they can get periodic escapes from prison to talk to lawyers, police ect, and hit the vending machines in the conference rooms, the products of which they then use as payment for protection from other inmates.

It is more likely that the 30 cases only came to light when Campbell was arrested and victims came forward. By the late 90's with the advent of computers, police would have acted if families had made formal complaints - sadly Danielle may have escaped his attentions if they had.

I actually stopped a friend of mine from visiting after my very sensitive and intuitive dog exhibited sings of anxiety and irritation and fear every time he visited. I took that as a conversation with my dog that said "he does bad things to me when you're in the other room" OR "this person is bad, please heed my warning" . I did this because my dog is my family, he guards me loyally, is my therapy on difficult days since I live alone and shows me love all the time. Sometimes he just has to wag his tail when I enter my kitchen and I feel better. So, yeah, parents ... come on!! Your child is the priority here. Note the price of not hearing/understanding/asking/believing? IT IS TOO HIGH!!!

Maybe you should read up on hindsight bias so you can stop asserting it. It’s often only after the abuse has taken place, with the benefit of hindsight, that social workers and psychologists can recognize grooming behaviors. I'm sure the parents had conflicting feelings and valued those relationships, esp the parent whose family of orientation it was. Clearly it was going to cause rifts bc even after his arrests, including the c.p. charges, their relationship blew up irreparably.

I was knowing a teenage girl(years ago) she was 14! She told me she was abused: sexually and emotionally by her own dad! The rest of her family founds and all of them: mother, uncles said to the girl to keep quite and they protect the monster. A long horror story(english is not my language, so this is the reason it is broken)

@@chelseapthib36 there is kinda 12 years from the story! The girl grew up as a beautiful woman (now she have, i think 25-26). I was trying to contact her but she ignores me everytime i found her on social media(she's like 300 miles away from my town). Back then, in 2010 when it was happen, there was a police investigation but the girl, under the presion of her entire family, she told to the police she lied about being sexually abused by her father but there are phone voice calls recorded when that monster admitted he abused his daughter from the age of 11 until the 14 years old when she told me what is happening. I was wondering why she doesn't tell her mom but soon i was about to found that her mom is truly evil as her father! She told her daughter if she put her dad in prison, she will abandoned her daughter! And so many other things to emotionally blackmail the girl! Again, sorry for my broken english! 12-13 yeare from that moment and i am still mad about it! Mad bcz i couldn't do more to fight against that evil family! But the weird thing is that the girl torn the back on me and one day she texted me: "please leave from this story and let it be, my dad promise me he will never touched me again and i need him in my life" the text message i was showing to the police but they said if the girl does not press charges they can't do anything! 😩😒😐

Blaming the parents, who are victims also inthis case, is very unreasonable and unfair. We have the benefit of hindsight and the knowledge of what actually went on. Danielle's parents did not. Also, times were a little different in 2001. We were not as fully aware of the degree and complexities of such crimes as we are today. Remember! No KZbin; no FaceBook or other such sites except for a few much less used sites. But most important, is the fact that Danielle's loving parents are NOT in any way to blame for not being able to foresee the awful futuree that they would all face.

congratulations on your baby! here are some things to keep in mind that i've learned. be honest with your child and learn how to handle difficult subjects in an age-appropriate way. treat them as a person and not as an object from day one. if you want to be respected as a parent, you have to earn it; you're not entitled to it. learn to manage anger so you never yell at your kids or worse hit them. listen to your child and engage with them so they know that their thoughts and interests are important. set a good example for them on how to deal with other people. lastly, apologize to them when you're wrong or make a mistake so they know they don't have to hide their own errors. parenting is hard but if you try to be a good parent and you reach out for help when you need it you'll do fine. with regards to keeping them safe from child abusers, know that most of the time it's someone they already know. you were probably raised with warnings of stranger danger but that's not sufficient. you need to teach children about consent. it's not just about sexual things; your child is a person and has the right to bodily autonomy. if they don't want to be hugged or whatever then that must be respected. a child that knows they can say 'no' is a much safer child and one that will develop sympathy for others better. the statistics of abuse are scary and sometimes despite your best efforts it happens. if it does happen remember that it's probably not your fault and with the above advice you're going to catch it early. good luck! i'm sure you'll be a good parent because you are already concerned about their future.

As a parent myself to 4 daughters - I think the best thing I ever did with my girls was to repeatedly tell them all that if ANYBODY ever even made them feel uncomfortable .. no matter WHO it was then they must tell us. No matter if it was a family member/ neighbour/teacher or whoever. And that I would always believe them and would ensure that they would never be left alone with them.

I was overprotective of my two sons. The thought of them being taken, was too much for me. I didn’t let them out alone. Overprotective? Yes. Do I still have my children, grown men now? Yes. Do I wish I’d have been less productive? I can’t answer that. I have them around now, how can you say you would do things differently? I remember when James Bulger went missing, and I remember thinking “it won’t be mine” and I think I’d be worse if I had girls.

Always listen to your gut feelings, take note of your first impressions (they are never wrong) and be observant of all interactions men have with your daughter. I will never forget when my next door neighbour, who I had perceived as a creep but had nothing to base it on, was over at our place for the 1st time, went to pick up my then 2 year old daughter. She yelled NOOO, pulled away and ran into her fathers arms. That spoke volumes to me as I had never seen her react like that to anyone and confirmed that my 1st impression was spot on.

Children get taught about stranger danger but it's always the ones closest to home to be careful of. I learnt that myself the hard way growing up,now I trust no one around my 3 nieces. And I'm talking FAMILY MEMBERS. Not strangers,people who have married into the family or family friends. Actual FAMILY. So sad you can't even trust family members but unfortunately it usually happens within the family to young girls. Mine started with comments and remarks that made me feel uncomfortable and a serious interest in what I was doing,who I was with,where I was if I wasnt home. Look after you're daughters/nieces etc. It ruins lives forever the damage that gets caused not only to the victim but others so if you think something isnt right then say something, if they are lying you will know. I was asked and I said no in fear what he may do to me until I had no choice because it broke me mentally and now 14 years later and after a pregnancy by my abuser her I still stand trying to be the best auntie I can be to those girls. I was groomed by a family member as an adolescent girl. Luckily, I somehow found the strength to break off the utterly inappropriate "friendship" and my parents made sure to keep him away. My family were completely cut off by the rest of the family, and 35 years later, have no contact with them. Apparently, in the family's opinion, protecting a 14 year old girl from a man twice her age is worse than the man's inappropriate actions.

It never mentioned if they had investigated the neighbour's decking he said he was building the day Danielle went missing. Though it's highly unlikely they didnt. I think the police did a thorough investigation which ultimately allowed for a murder conviction despite there being no body found. They also worked tirelessly on trying to locate her body, as did the public volunteers. May she be found and laid to rest giving her family at least some comfort.

It's more likely he buried her at the construction site of a supermarket in Grays. This happened around the same time construction began. I still live in Grays, and I remember how big the construction was. I took up the space of a large bus station, several car parks, and rerouted several roads, as well as diverting a lot of footpaths. The construction began in 2001 and was completed some time in early 2002, with the store opening in May of that year.

Sorry but her parents knew he was sniffing around their daughter, and when she was missing her dad went and looked through the window of this Stuarts house, seen the cameras set up, and didnt report this to the Police. They knew he had been arrested for taking photos of a 14 year old previously, yet never told the Police of their concerns regarding Stuart. Maybe they didnt want to say anything because Stuart knew something ?????????? who knows.

The police said that this man had been taking photographs of young teenage girls for a twenty year period and only turned into the police on one occasion. Even then he was able to conceal the facts from his family, so he was obviously extremely manipulative and adept at appearing very harmless in his actions around Danielle. I suspect Danielle was naïve and simply thought that he was her friend right up until the moment he showed his true devious intent.

As far as I'm aware, of everything we know about these monstrous people, in the vast majority, Rehabilitation isn't possible for them. Mostly, they just get better at hiding it, at manipulation. My parents would not have hesitated to tell him to step off and if someone treated my child this way, so would I. If you’re in this position it’s your DUTY and RESPONSIBILITY to PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN. (That’s the TL;DR) The days are gone when this type of behavior should ever be excused away or overlooked. You can say the facts without moralizing, or protecting the parents conduct or blaming the parents and remain neutral bc the fact is that if they had to do over again they’d almost certainly do it differently! If they were speaking they would tell people to do it differently with their own children. I know that for a fact, as Danielle’s mother (in the actual documentary this is based on) said that she wishes she had. She said you can get over a row or argument if it comes to nothing, but you cannot ever get over losing your child! Danielle’s friend and her friend’s father knew that Danielle’s uncle took her to the movies and held her hand! That parent didn’t interfere out of worry that he’d be interfering in their life, even knowing it was very wrong and telling his own daughter it was not ethical conduct. **If you see your child’s friend subjected to this, you need to address it with the parents, and if they don’t act, report it!** The cases we DON’T hear about are cases where the right things were done. We don’t hear about arguments people have. We’ll never know how they might’ve turned out.

That would have been the time to remove that so called piece of humanity from her presence and to let it be clearly known he was no longer welcome anywhere near their daughter, or home, ever again. Never, ever let your concerns for upsetting family dynamics be the reason you do not intervene. There is two people from Waterbury, CT missing . The first one is Lynette Hunter aka Winkle. She used to play with us in out yard. Winkie disappeared in 1988. She went to NYC with a male friend and went into a store and was never heard from again. This disturbs me much. Also a young man ten years later missing in NYC after going to store. I don't know the young man's name but I knew his father most of my life. No one is looking for these people. Can you take a look. Maybe someone is willing to say what happened back then now 😶

At the time, I was brandishing a SHARP, 24" long, 2-tined BARBECUE FORK. He sputtered apologies, claiming he did not know how young she was because of her height. I was a child who lived in the same town as Danielle, when i got older I went to her school. They had a beautiful indoor garden in memory of her next to the science department. I am not sure if it is still a fixture in the school, but i hope it is. Of all the true crime I have listened to on YT, I've not heard anyone covering this case. Thank you for doing this. I havent lived in East Tilbury for many, many years, but I can tell you how insular and connected the community was in those days, and her loss was felt for many years after her disappearance. Any information that provides closure for her family is long overdue, gods know they deserve it
