We use hand pruners many times a day at Truly Tropical. We've been using Vesco Italian Hand Pruners, but they are rather expensive. So we tried some new options:
gonicc 8" Professional Sharp Bypass Pruning Shears (GPPS-1002)
amzn.to/2NuIuFS
Power Drive Ratchet Anvil Hand Pruning Shears
amzn.to/2OGCBSl
Felco F-2 Classic Manual Hand Pruner'
amzn.to/2PTwaM0
Sensei 8.5" Professional Bypass Pruning Shears
amzn.to/2MSUOu6
Note: Since we recorded this video, Sensei Tools have changed their name to Sengreen. It’s the same people, same company, and same products - just a new look.

I'm 70 yrs old and have bought several hand pruners of the years. My Felco #2's are the only ones to have stood the test of time. I've been married 52 yrs and my soul mate all these have tried, when I wasn't looking, to take down small trees with them. He has also ruined a few loppers the same way. Was just cleaning my pruners and saw your video and thought I would share. ps I would also recommend bypass pruners over anvil pruners. thanks for your video.

Thank you for the video. The Sensai pruners caught my eye as hadn't heard of them before and because I am volunteering at a Japanese-style Zen garden. Just to show how prices have changed, four years after this video was published -- at the end of July 2022 -- the Sensai pruners are $45 on Amazon and the Felco F-2 pruners are $66 on Amazon.

You always should cut with one hand. And with thicker branches you can use the other hand and push the branch a little bit so that there is a tension, then you can cut the branch easily, at least with a sharp blade pruner. But thank you for showing the different models.

Test Okatsune they use 60-61 Rockwell steel to stay sharp a long time. They are wicked sharp and can be resharpened with a Japanese wet stone they also provide. 60-61 Rockwell is in the realm of the the absolute high end Japanese knifes. Having that wicked hard steel just let them stay sharp for a long time. The cost about 43 euros here in Europe. And when a company makes specific cutters for three schools of ikebana, so they are as traditional Japanese as they can get. 🇯🇵🇯🇵😆

Youre only squeezing the bypass pruners once and hitting the ratchets multiple times... Treat your bypass pruners as if they were ratcheters and pump them a couple times inside the same cut and youll get right through that stick... add a little rotation to each squeeze and you can cut any branch you can fit in those things... all grip strength determines is how many pumps itll take you but even a weak hand can cut through with proper technique.

I don't think bypass pruners are meant to be used like that.

Thanks for posting. I appreciated when you say where is made because most pruners product from China based on the reviews I saw on Amazon are not as good in terms of quality as Japanese, Suiss made etc. I like Japanese made and do not dare to buy Chinese products and now with the COVID19, no more Chinese products.

Anything you have bought with steel in it will have come from China they may be made somewhere else but the steel will have come from China. Also any fertilizer brands you have bought or other chemicals, the base chemicals will have come from China. You can't catch a virus from an inanimate object.

TuriFier I’m not a professional, but I have 60 rose bushes in my home garden, plus I’m a master volunteer for the historic San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. We deadhead April through October, cut deadwood in November and prune in January. With 4,000 rose bushes on five acres, the Felcos with their 1” cutting capacity, saves me a lot of time, I don’t have to mess with carrying both long-handle loppers plus pruners when we go after deadwood or when we prune. I can pretty much cut everything in the garden with my hand pruners. With Felco, I can travel light when covering five acres of roses, and not have to make trips back across the park to grab a pair of loppers from the shed if I happen to encounter a thick cane. So there’s also time savings and convenience to factor in if you do a lot of pruning or deadheading. Felcos can do the job of both loppers and pruners in many instances, obviously, not all instances. But for most of what I do, I get a lot of mileage from them compared to other brands.

I have read a lot of online reviews and the ARS VS-8 series seem to be even better than the Felcos: better quality, ultra-hard and very sharp Japanese steel, no rusting issues (sometimes a problem with Felco) and easier/smoother one-handed locking mechanism. The R Model has a rotating handle.

Felco are the best pruners, you can order replacement parts like blades and springs so they can last for ever. I use Felco6 now because they fit my smallish hand really well, Felco2 are a bit too big.

The real test of pruners requires time. Most are sharp new but good steel will hold and edge. Also poorer models will loosen up and allow the blades to bend apart so you don't get a good clean cut.

Red is far from the easiest color to spot, since millions of us don't have accurate color vision. The best color for visibility is yellow or yellow green, which POPS even when red doesn't.

I’ve used Coronas basic pruner. Got them for free at my last job. Got a new job and forgot my pruners there. Went to buy them at my local hardware store. $31... the other pruners they have are made of plastic. I just want a good durable pruner that gets the job done without any fancy stuff.

The Corona basic old school secateur/hand-pruner is the best, strongest, the 3/4" cut-model. Felco's are weak-bladed,… they break. Corona blades don't break,… they're part of the body, not separte thinner pieces.

I'm using a felco in work and that thing cuts through everything and it did not break (I cut through metal wires and thick branches mainly). I also never heared of a felco with a broken blade. Maybe you got acheap knock-of?
