I live about 15 minutes from Springfield, and yes it was a dying town. The last decade or so, it has seen a huge improvement in many areas. From the city upkeep to lower crime rates, even expanding and becoming bigger with new homes and apartments. There is absolutely no one eating the family pet for Pete’s sake. The part that upsets me the most is not that trump and Vance are spreading these lies… it’s that his cultists are dumb enough to actually believe them.

I live in Dayton, I have friends in Springfield, my mother-in-law works there. These lies are putting the town as a whole in danger, the bomb threats have forced multiple public buildings, including schools to close since last week. Springfield as a community has struggled for decades, and does NOT need this kind of assault. I'm seeing this bullshit play out and I have to hope that these lies coupled with some talk I've seen about Ohio being a much closer state for Trump than in the past ends up costing him our state. We used to be a swing state, we have an anti-gerrmandering bill up in November, anyone paying attention knows the local Republicans have had their thumbs on the scale for a while and pissed off a lot of people with the road blocks they put up for the abortion bill where they were met with a tidal wave of middle fingers. Maybe this will be the year we get back to purple.

I live in an apartment in Alabama, and my next door neighbor is a chef at a local restaurant. He is also a Haitian immigrant. I have no fears whatsoever about the well-being of the 2 outdoor cats that I feed daily. I remember when newly arrived Vietnamese immigrants were accused of the same garbage. These racists never change and tell the same tired old lies all the time. When will we all learn?

There is no right kind of immigrants for these people. I work in biotech making medicine and the USA make it miserable and expensive for all immigrants. I work with people that have PhDs and postdocs from around the world and are some of the most highly educated humans on earth and they are working to make medicine for people. They have never committed any crime. Several of them have to leave the country for a few months every couple of years just to renew their visa, others have to pay thousands of dollars to renew it. Meanwhile, as an American, I went to Germany for a PhD and then for work. My longest visit to an immigration office for a visa has been about 20 minutes and the most it has cost me is about 200 dollars. If you are someone they want they make it easy. These are laws that republicans changed to make immigration harder. Face the reality, they don't want any immigrants no matter how critical they are.

I can only imagine if I were a Haitian living right now in Ohio, how uncomfortable, nervous and probably scared I would be right now. For myself, for my kid, for my family. I am an immigrant myself and I at times have felt uncomfortable in unfamiliar culture, not knowing what is appropriate to say or not to say, how to behave in some situations. But I never had to fear for my safety, I guess b/c my skin color is a "good" color. The person who posted it accused Kamala of being unprofessional, saying that they wouldn’t want to debate someone that makes such facial expressions. Then someone mentioned that she was making that facial expression because Trump was saying shit about immigrants eating pets, and after triggered the Koreans so much that they ratioed the original post accusing the original poster of mistakenly believing that they’d be treated the same as the white folks in power should they ever move to the USA.

It’s extra hilarious, because most of the Koreans involved in the cyber-debate the ensued clearly hadn’t watched the actual debate. The reply to the original post that went viral only mentioned “immigrants”, not “Korean immigrants”, but putting the “immigrants” and “eating pets” together in one sentence was enough to trigger them so much that they instantly rose up to criticize Trump’s bullshit.

'Dachhasen' (literally 'roof hares') is a German nickname for cats for exactly that reason. People ate cats in dire situations like war and famine, and made it look as if they were eating hare or rabbit. With many people having German ancestry in the US, these (in this case false) claims shouldn't even be such big issue as people make it out to be. Some of their own ancestors probably did it.

Apparently these "crimes" are being committed by coyotes. It's a known problem across Ohio (as it is in many states.) They are terrific hunters, highly adaptable, are now found in all sorts of suburban and urban areas, and can take down most anything smaller than a deer. I could talk about members of my family who were WWII vets fighting against fascism or actually died in battle, I could provide proof that the Trumpers are lying over and over, I could talk about what a great Rep. and Governor Tim Walz has been, but I’ve already done that and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Vance even admitted he made the whole story up -- "If I have to create stories so that the American media actually has to pay attention to the suffering of American people, then that’s what I’m going to do" and when the interviewer noted he said he was creating stories he tried to deflect it by saying "I say that we’re creating a story, meaning we’re creating the American media focusing on it." Star Trek writers do that too, creating stories so that people will pay attention to them for higher ratings... but that doesn't mean Romulans or Borg are real either. This whole thing started with a baseless Facebook post that was forwarded to Vance about what a neighbor's daughter's friend said... no evidence, just third or fourth-hand storytelling that's on a par with "my cousin's neighbor's barber's uncle saw Bigfoot." But I seriously doubt Vance will start pushing for a federal Bigfoot crackdown if enough of his constituents call him about it, because Bigfoot prolly doesn't have higher levels of melanin in their skin than Vance, which is what this is all really about to him. 😮‍💨

Yesterday when I was buying lunch there were two women behind me talking about politics and how horrible “they” are and ruining America Mind you I only heard parts of the conversation but it taught or reminded me of something very important which is that these two women were talking about “they” and “them” and the “others” or the enemy and there are no enemies just people and people are everywhere and different and there is nothing wrong with that the only wrong thing is trying to make humans, people into “others” or the enemy I don’t know it just made me sad to think that they fall for the story that there is an enemy or “other” and otherwise they were perfectly polite and I wished one of them happy birthday when I heard it was her birthday and informed her it was also my mother’s birthday and she wished my mother a happy birthday People can be perfectly civil and polite with completely different opinions but where evil prevails is when people are able to be convinced that there are enemies and an “us” versus “them” creating enemies where there are none Just an interesting event because it was a microcosm of experiencing in person what this video is about It makes me sad :( Remember to vote people so this kind of rhetoric doesn’t win

As a child of Haitian immigrants all I can say is: wow. Not only did they find a completely new bs stereotype to create to use on us, it’s completely wild. my grandmother being haitian was always something that i took pride in. she was loving, she was an amazing botanist and she instilled a love for plants in me, and she taught me a respect for all life, regardless of how many legs they have. my grandfather is cajun and native and he also held a strong respect for nature. we always had pets and we’ve always loved our pets. my earliest memories are of walking to the corner store with my grandmother and our dog, feeding our pet raccoons, and crawling under the porch to try to play with the stray cats we fed. it’s so hard to keep my composure while these people that couldn’t care less about me, how i was raised, or what i hold dear spread lies about people like me and the people that taught me how to show love. never have i ever experienced racism as casual and “acceptable” as the slick cat-eater jokes i have to tolerate at work from coworkers and management alike. they think it’s absolutely okay because politicians are telling them that it’s true, and i will never forgive the right or anyone that supports it for allowing such a harmful narrative to go unchecked. they have never been about anything but hate and this election has shown that.

Steve, I appreciate your passion, yes and your anger in reporting on the GOP's attack on ALL immigrants (especially those with darker skin). The crazy thing about the relocation of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio is that virtually all of them resettled prior to 2020. Let's see, who was the President from Jan 2017 to Jan 2021? Yet, I don't recall a single word of protest at the time. I have worked with many immigrants over the years. Many of them have been from countries in Africa and have brown skin. Most have been Muslims too and every single one of them has enriched my life, broadened my perspective on the world, and many have become treasured friends. Sadly, there are those who won't allow anyone 'different' into their lives. They are the poorer for making that decision and they make us all less than we could be.

The most unconvincing part of Vance’s lie is his claim that constituents contacted him about this ‘problem’. Any time I’ve written to my Senators, I receive a form reply from a staffer that in no way addresses my concerns. Politicians never read their emails.
