​@@Kye9842​ Some school districts and states are putting forth rules/bills that *require* teachers to inform parents of any situation where a student wants to use a different name or pronouns. Depending on the situation at home, this can be very dangerous for students. The bill discussed in the video prevents teachers from being forced to out students to their parents, and instead makes it a *choice,* presumably so the teachers can use their best judgment about discussing the students' identities based on the individual context and safety of these situations. I hope this explanation helps!

Parents rights are by their nature anti-children's rights. All children's rights are protected freedoms carved out from the natural/historical absolute control of the parents. Thus all parent's rights are either rollbacks of children's rights (protections), or pre-emptive attacks on potential children's rights. Parents legally and practically have absolute control in the home by default. Parents don't need to be granted rights, because those can only have a use against their children or institutions getting between the children and parents on their child's behalf. They would need some rights if children were considered wards of the state (or even just their own legal persons) by default, but that isn't the world we're living in. Instead you are the property of your parents until you can age into freedom.

My father was conservative, raised as a southern baptist, I got quarterly beltings over grades. I moved out at 16, went no contact at 18. Didn't speak to my father or mother for 3 years. They got updates on me from my godparents, who are friends with my best friend's parents. So not much beyond what I was doing for work and what city I was living in. An ex convinced me to give them one more chance. I don't know why they changed. I'd like to think they didn't want to lose their daughter, but I know I'm so proud of them for changing. My father is now a staunch democrat, and a huge supporter of women's rights. And has said that while he doesn't understand all this "newfangled gender business" it's really none of his business and that if it makes a person happy and doesn't hurt anyone else, he's got no right to stand in their way. So while I could wish for a different childhood, I'm proud of who my parents have become and I knew how I did not want to raise my kid. I wish everyone's parents could turn out like mine did.

Back in 1995, one of my teachers told my parents that I had a boyfriend. I was 16 and we were not subtle in school but I recall that it felt like such a profound violation. My life and safety was not at stake but my sense of security in that building was gone. So many LGBT youth NEED that sense of security. They need that autonomous space to explore themselves. My daughter knew I would always love and support her but I was not the first person to whom she came out. If a teacher had told me about it before she was ready, they would have stolen something important from her and, to a lesser extent, from me. And there are kids whose life and safety is at risk. As parents, we do not have a right to control every aspect of our children’s life or to even know every detail. We have important obligations to care for and protect our children but they are still autonomous individuals and, as they get older, we have to earn the right to know them by building those relationships. The age if majority is not intended to be a binary but the final step in a process of individuation.

THANK YOU!!!! As a parent of a child on puberty blockers, we are terrified of these folks getting into office. We already left one stat and are now making safety plans to leave our country, just in case, if we have to. These bigots have never sat with a sobbing child as they struggled with their changing body and their attempt to make sense of feeling like a foreigner in their own skin. This was not a small or fast decision. This was not a decision we made for them. It was not a decision they made alone either. Between their therapist, doctor, my husband and myself, and some amazing mentors, they took time. They also have a few nonbinary mentors who encourage them to slow down and breathe, to just be a kid, to not have all the answers, to not even have all the questions, and that is ok to change their mind…funny…none of this sounds like grooming or indoctrination (like the right that continually talks about teaching our children to be a man or woman…hhhmmm….sounds like another one of those accusations that just might be a confession). And yet here we sit, scared that if they get power, they will accuse us of child abuse for helping our child have their inside match their outside.

Saline (literally just salt in water and sterilized) costs _you_ about $160 per liter. The hospital (and you by extension) can get a case of 10 of the IV ready bags all certified and everything for like $14 per liter I know I've checked. A one night hospital stay can easily run like 2-5k upwards of 10-20 k and that's a run of the mill turns out nothing is actually wrong with you stay. Ambulance ride? That's another 1.5 k. Need any blood work? You're talking like 100 to 300 bucks a pop. Gotta get X-rays? That's gonna be $500. God help you if you need surgery: that can run multiple hundreds of thousands. And chemo? Dude you may need to take out a loan. And have fun getting insurance to actually do their jobs (you know the ones you pay them for)! Remember they can decide independently if a procedure is "medically necessary" for some weird reason. All this to say: our health care system if FUCKED. Every state should have legislation like this, unfortunately it goes the opposite way in RW controlled states. I was a teacher in a south Georgia HS, and by every metric I was good. I had students that felt my class was a safe space, My students did well, I cared about them and wanted them to succeed and know that at least one teacher had their back, no matter what issues they were facing. I even had one student who had been involved prior with some bad elements, he asked if he could spend the morning in my classroom before classes started because he felt safe there. I had good evaluations, my direct supervisor thought I was doing a great job. One day before I even came out myself, one of my students asked if I would be the faculty advisor for the gay-straight alliance. I of course said yes, wanting to provide a caring and nurturing environment for marginalized students. I filled out the paperwork and when I did, the assistant principal to whom I handed it looked at me oddly and asked if I was sure. I was young and naive so I said, "of course I'm sure". After that, I was evaluated by the principal himself(which almost never happened), he called in a principal from another school to do one of my evaluations(Which NEVER happened before) in both cases I was told my evaluations were unsatisfactory. I was told by my supervisor what needed to happen, he evaluated me and had nothing but good things to say. At the end of the year the principal told me my contract was not being renewed because of those evaluations. When I told my supervisor, the vice-principal by the way, he was shocked. So even if my contract was not renewed because of "bad evaluations", It was obvious what the motivating factor was. Obviously Georgia has no protections for teachers, there are no workable unions, and school systems get away with conduct like this. Ok, I am done with my rambling diatribe.

Thank you for your service to the LGBTQ community. There are kids alive today because of you and your boldness. I was asked to be the GSA sponsor in my school and as a straight drama teacher I took on the challenge. The kids taught me a lot! I was fortunate to live in Canada, but even there I was questioned by members of the school board and my principal was questioned. Our posters were torn down. My Union was very strong in this particular province (British Columbia)so I was not too worried. My principal had my back and, even though he wasn't for it at first, came to me later and asked if I wanted a budget because he saw the numbers of students that were in the club, and what it was doing for the mental health of the school. Hopefully you got another job in a better place and your Union backs you up now. I'm retired now but I still run into kids that pull me aside and say "hey aren't you the teacher that ran the GSA, Thanks for doing that." Now we have school boards in Alberta doing similar nonsense to Georgia and Florida. The fight is never over. The world needs more teachers as bold as you. Thanks!

I'm a public school teacher in Arizona, and my principal got in trouble for trying to support trans students' privacy. Likely one of my coworkers is a bigot and shared a staff email with parents who spread it around. It ended up on Fox News and he had to officially establish our policy as "we can't keep secrets from parents", advising us to tell our students that this is the policy. Basically, we now have to tell our students that it's NOT safe to come out to us. I will never abide by something as absurdly pernicious as that.

I've often wondered how my life could have been different. I'm in my fifties now but knew I was gay at eight years old. When starting high school I was steered into advanced education classes. I ended up dropping out of high school and ran away from home at 17. At home my catholic parents communicated that being gay was a sin and worthy of violence. At school I was bullied. Imagine all the lost potential. Not just for me but also for all the kids that have to navigate the dangers of being lgbtq+ in a hostile place.🏳️‍🌈

I happen to know a young queer person in Texas who was outed by their school the year before last. The whole thing blew up so horribly that I ended up promising the kid that if their parents threw them out, I would take them in, no non-logistical questions asked. (I reserve the right to ask things like, "Where is your nearest bus/train station, and what do you need to get there to pick up your ticket?") There is still a very real possibility that their family will disown them if they don't "straighten out", and my periodic reassurances that my offer stands and I'll support them no matter what are a big part od why they're able to keep going to school at all. I live in California, of course, and I have the wild idea that kids deserve to be loved and supported regardless of gender or orientation. Crazy, I know. Don't let the door hit ya, Elon. Three (of our 10) provinces have "parental rights" laws that are the opposite of bill AB1955, allowing teachers to be penalized if they don't out an LGBT+ student to their parents if the student opens up to them. I live in a province that hasn't enacted a law yet, but I worry that with our conservative provincial leader, it could happen before the next election as a way to garner support from their conservative base. Despite all the progress our community has made, these are still difficult and sometimes scary times. I am a teacher and I love this law. The only person who has the right to out a person is the person themselves. I do not have the right to tell a student's parents that they are LGBTQ unless that student give me permission and asks me to. I've helped a lot of students come out to their parents. Lots of kids want to tell their parents but do not know how and just need a trusted person, like a teacher, to be in their corner when they do, but in all of those cases, the person who made the decision was the student and it needs to be that way. Requiring that I out a student makes it so they do not have that safe person to help them out. Laws that require me to out kids hurt kids. This isn't a parent's rights issue, it is a students' rights issue and student have rights. People need to recognize those students' rights.

I’m back living with family and surrounded in conservative Orange County by people who are either fully behind Republican plans or really don’t know what the Republican Party is. They have been inoculated against the truth (believe me I’ve tried and the usual answer from them is that I’m the one being lied to. A bill made by the government that says that the government, or any other form of authority, cannot force you to say something you're not ready to say. Geez, you'd think that the party of small government and liberties would be happy with a law that limits authority and government.

We had this happen in Australia. An entirely voluntary programme called 'Safe Schools' that was created by qualified educators to prevent bullying and to support gender diverse kids in school was framed as 'grooming' and basically became politically toxic.

The SAFETY Act actually doesn't make outing someone illegal, if they think that it's best for the child. It prevents any future law or policy that would REQUIRE the teacher to out them to their parents, allowing the teacher to make that decision on a case-by-case basis (I recommend reading the entire bill, it's only 2 pages)

This is a commonsensical law that will actually protect schools from lawsuits in future. Imagine if a student said to a teacher that their parents will not supprt them or that they are afraid of abuse and then the school exposes the student in any case, leading to the kid being abused or kicked out of their home. Would that kid not have a legitimate grievance against the school? If the schools disclose such personal information (which is also mostly irrelevant to their education) then schools are actually intervening into the relationship between students and their parents / guardians and overstepping their role. Edit: I forgot that these people don't see children as persons with rights.

Perfect job Steve! I've been screaming this for years as a trans woman myself. Many allies and liberals don't always do the best trying to defend us or talk about things correctly. The only other thing I notice is that both left and right will focus on the transition part, but we are just our gender before and after. We don't change our gender, and we aren't careful people will actually fool themselves talking about us. We don't change our gender - that is conversion therapy. We are our gender. (It's just different than what we are "assigned".)

To highlight this I like to utilize the Taylor Lorenz clip with Chaiya Raichick where Chaiya says: "You can't change your gender". And Taylor responds "What's the big deal anyways"? Well... the big deal is we aren't changing our gender. We may realize it later because of the cishetero conformity of society forcing us into a box we don't belong in, but it develops the same way cisgender people's do.

A lot of conservative stances on child social policy makes sense when you remember the US has not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Some listed rights are children’s rights to have their own identity and to have opinions that people take seriously

You are spot on, Steve. Thank you for using your platform to speak truth in the face of fascism. One of the biggest losses I have seen in the last decade: these attacks on the humanity of others have been incessant. Christian conservatives have unwoven the foundational fabric that was the implicit social contract we all had with each other. They have not only abandoned the core teachings of their messiah (kindness, tolerance, acceptance), but they have shifted the overton window of society so far away from those values that it feels unsafe to openly show kindness in public. I hope that we all vote against the Republicans that created this sad state of our nation, so that we can begin to shift the overton window back towards humanity.

I have a trans son, and there are feelings involved for the parent, but it isn't about the parent, it's about the child. My kids can comes to me and tell me anything, im on their side, and I don't know how every parent doesn't feel that way.

It's a sad fact of the state our global society is at. Some people just want to cling to their biases. Of course, it also has to do with their upbringing, as most often is they case, they grew up in a time or in a household where such topics were taboo, or discussion of such topics were always negative. A lotta people just get spoonfed lies their entire lives, to the point where they can no longer think for themselves as a consequence. But it is on us, and future generations, to put an end to this madness! 💙

My favorite part of Harris' nomination is how much it led to Republicans saying the quiet parts out loud (re: 7:50). You had Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) call her a "DEI hire" (and then, upon being pressured by leadership, literally apologize by saying, "I'm sorry, but it's true"), and then of course JD Vance alienated not just women, not just step-parents, but everyone with _toxoplasmosis gondii_ with his whole "childless cat lady" comment. At this point, Harris' campaign strategy should just be to show up to events, say nothing (though maybe make a few more of her _incredible_ laughs), and just let the Republicans trip over their own feet.
