For those wondering what tariffs look like when they’re done well, look into the Japanese automobile tariffs of the 80’s. Japanese auto manufacturers were able to mass produce vehicles in their home countries for far lower than the American auto makers could in the US, so they were able to massively undercut the American auto makers. The Americans went to the federal government and complained, and the federal government put a tariff on Japanese auto imports. What did the Japanese do? Well, Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, and Subaru all established large manufacturing plants in America and started making their cars in America (to great success I might add). In fact, this move by Japanese auto manufacturers is what prompted the Americans to start manufacturing more and more of their vehicles in Mexico (of course this was also around the same time as NAFTA, which contributed to that) because even once the Japanese started making their cars in America, the American brands still couldn’t compete on price. To this day, the auto makers who manufacture the most vehicles on American soil are Toyota, Honda, Tesla, Volvo Trucks North America, and Kia (in that order). Notice the lack of American brand names there (minus Tesla of course). EDIT: I forgot to mention that the tariffs on Japanese cars were lifted in the 2000’s under W Bush, but the Japanese auto makers have stayed in America. In fact, it’s good publicity for them. Look at Toyota’s website, they love to brag that most of their vehicles are made in America. Also, look at the driver’s side window on Volvo semis, at the bottom right hand corner is a sticker proudly boasting that it’s made in the USA.
