@@elenabob4953 I have the right as an American citizen to participate &/or protest politically regardless of what kind of music I'm a fan of. My music choices do not interfere in the political workings of my government. However, my experiences with social media and making statements using memes/fancams, etc from the music groups I like have been honed by my participation in "fandom", particularly K-pop, which necessitates a higher participation online since it isn't heard on the radio. When I participate/protest politically I use that experience and deep knowledge of "appropriate" memes/fancams as response. The news isn't that K-pop fans are interfering, but instead that there are significantly enough protesters, who happen to be K-pop fans with their intimate knowledge of social media and online presence, able to mobilize as a group and protest non-violently and creatively. That's a whole different kettle of fish from a foreign government interfering in another's elections

It's so weird when K-POP fans are not recongized as normal people - I am political bc I have a job, I pay taxes, I have to pay rent, etc etc, I am a normal citizen that happenes to like korean music. Seperating "being a fan" and "being political" is ridiculous. Every human on this planet SHOULD BE political bc the government shapes our life and depending on the country you live in, especially if it happens to be a democratic country then you are basially required to be political anyways bc you choose your representatives that help to make changes for the better for you and future generations. Every industry is involved in politics - no matter if it's food, clothes, housing, media, music,... The news calling the trumptrolling an act of "kpop fans" is just a simple label. If it wasn't this term they would have used "twitter users" or "internet trolls" or something. But the name "kpop" get's more clicks at the moment. Also anybody saying kpop is not political is ridiculous aswell - child labour, misogyny, racial aspects, etc = political. There are a lot of korean artists that are political aswell. Damn one of the reasons BTS is so incredibly popular is bc they are extremely political. just saying

That online commenter saying that if fandoms keep getting involved in politics then kpop in the west is going to be deteriorated is so hilarious. Korean people that think like this clearly don't know anything about western culture. Over the past few months kpop has gained more respect from Westerners than it ever has. Fandoms getting involved in politics is taking away from the stigma kpop fans have always had of being silly and immature. I've seen so many locals appreciating kpop fans and in turn checking out kpop and listening to the music. Korean people have to realise that the gp in America and the west usually likes when celebs get involved in politics and celebs that stay quiet are criticised. I mean look how heavily BTS was praised for their $1mil donation to BLM and then the fandom got the same praise for matching it. No offense but some korean people need to get out of the bubble they're living in and understand if they want korean culture to grow in the west this is what needs to be done.

@Whitney Titus I understand what you are saying but the thing is, when you live under a system of government that does not fairly allow everyone access to human rights, the lack of their human rights and their treatment becomes political because it is the political body that is keeping them from having those rights. If this was an issue of there just being racist citizens in a country that otherwise treated everyone fairly, it would be a humanity problem. But the racism in the United States is systemic and built into our laws and policies. Until those laws and policies change, racism will continue to thrive within the system and outside it. The people doing the murdering are agents of the state and supported by the state. That is as political as it gets.

literally had the same thoughts when i was listening to this. i think a lot of people get immersed into Kpop because it can be an escape from reality because if you think about it this is what the companies aim to sell. Kpop is meant to be, in someway, easy to digest. similar to a utopia (basically just far from reality as possible). hense why a lot of companies censor what artists can say or comment on. these artist are meant to sell you a concept or a dream which can also explain why they shy away from speaking about their problems etc... i'm rabbling but i hope you get what i mean. however as time has gone past its become obvious that this won't pass anymore and can come off as "fake" or manufactured (this is a whole other topic)and is simply unrealistic to portray an image of perfection. because as much as you can get lost in the world of Kpop where "politics" or social movements are not mentioned, in reality thats just not how the world works. thats why you've seen groups like BTS pop off with what they portray in their music (concept or not this reaches people more) or you see individuals like Jonghyun (rip) speak up on issues such as LGBTQ rights and so much more and more recently artists speaking out on the BLM movement and making donations. i think trying to separate culture/politics from Kpop would just be very backwards and would make Kpop stagnant its progression. the younger generation os well as the current generation is getting more and more interested in what is going on around the world and they're realising that their voices can be heard and Kpop right now is a massive culture, so of course people will use it to voice their opinions especially now that the whole world is aware of how powerful Kpop fans and culture can be. Being silent just won't work anymore in my opinion.

When really, we do but due to our proximity to whiteness, there's an advantage that we are more readily accepted into a white institution. The model minority status grants us less of the oppression, racism, and inequality that the Black community face but that doesn't mean we don't face it, it's just at at a lesser extent. Here in the US, with our sh*t leadership, that's not happening until we have a vaccine. ... Art and culture is a reflection of everyday life, which is heavily impacted by politics. Just because an individual feels comfortable in life, they shouldn't criticize and shut down people who aren't satisfied with discrimination and are fighting for a better future.

I think the important thing to remember for kpop stans is that we're all human before we are fans. We all come from different places and backgrounds and we are not interested just in music but politics as well. You can't separate music from politics, especially when it has an impact on all of us. I assume the majority of fans who actually organize these kinds of online protests and trolling are people in their late teens or adults (such as me). And thanks to the power of social media it is incredibly easy to put together tens of thousands of people and do shit like this.

I would argue that art and culture are inextricably tied to politics, which obviously includes music. And I mean....... Just look at rap, country, and punk music in the US. I dunno, in the US at least it is not separate. Brands are becoming more political now as well, but I could understand that a different country would have different ideas about all of this. There a lot of reasons that the Kpop Fandoms of the US skew heavily left. Some of it is that you have to be open to another language and culture that you are unfamiliar with. Also the fact that Asian Americans have a limited audience/representation when it comes to music and pop culture in general. And the fact that gender expression is a bit different in the Kpop industry by what you can wear as a guy and have it be considered 'appropriate' in comparison is another hurdle if you lean right. Adding to that is the diversity of the fandoms itself when it comes to gender, race, age, and income it gets less surprising that US Kpop fans would inexplicably connect their favorite music with politics or hesitate to weaponize the fandom/music itself. Also, part of the agitation over a Trump rally at Tulsa was because it was on Juneteenth, adding insult to injury. So, yeah.... A lot of people felt it was super inappropriate to put it lightly. And it was Class A trolling because people got to hit Trump's ego, which is arguably a better hit than if they had actually bought seats and shown up.

I totally agree and that I live in Argentina. I understand that in Korea pollitics with K-Pop is almost never mixed, or at least it is not the norm. But if you start to see how Kpop was born, you see Seo Taiji, his message and his influence and you can see that Kpop was born as an artistic form of expression and protest, then it evolved into what is nowadays known as the machinery that is, in my opinion BTS broke a little with this standard. Korean fans may not be used to the relationship that art has, in this case music, with social protest, but this says more about how the large companies took this form of expression and monetized it. They took away the political expression from the music.

Another who assumes who is and is not open to foreign music and culture. The main reason you think it is real lefties is that the majority are teens and young adults. Those hormonal and rebellious ages. Have you listened to the first few hits of the Beatles? We teen girls around the world went nuts. I went to two concerts but only saw them. Too many of the girls screamed non-stop. Even when the Beatles stop singing in the middle of a song it took awaited for the girls to notice. They asked them to stop screaming because others, like me, wanted to hear them. Didn’t work. We had a Japanese song that was a hit. Sang along to it. A singing French nun. There was a lot of Italian Opera and romantic Italian songs in our movies. Harry Belafonte sang “Hava Nagilla”. Lots of foreign entertainers of all sorts were on the Ed Sullivan Show. Americans who had TVs watched it almost religiously. Because of two world wars we had lots of first and second gens. I am a second gen from my dad’s side. His parents came here as poor teens from two different non-English speaking countries before 1910. It has appalled me how unwilling even my children’s generation is to listen to a variety of foreign music. Hispanic pop is acceptable to them and their kids. I gave up on our crap in the 2000’s. Ga Ga wearing her dinner, raw, to a music award show started me looking. I first found Japanese entertainment. Loved Arashi and Gackt. Then I found Kdramas and Kpop in 2008. I loved decades of our music but I swore I would never be in a musical rut like my parent’s generation. I listen to many decades but did not want to only be listening to Oldies But Goodies. As I commented to another, birds of a feather flock together. The fans you are aware of are younger, true. Much more talkative and on a lot of social media. They are also likely part of the herds that started the dam fan wars, I stopped watching EXO and BTS because of that crap. Still don’t watch. If you don’t have something good to say then say nothing. S. Korean entertainers are worked harder than just about anybody. And they get a lot of crap from evil haters. Probably part of the reason so many suicide. I get the impression that there are a lot more Hispanic fans than American. From Mexico to the tip of South America, plus the Gulf and Caribbean Islands. Many Spanish speakers in the Philippines too. Those trollers should not screw with election campaigns unless they believe it is okay for other trollers to mess with the side they are rooting for or in their country’s elections. No different than what the two major Old World foreign powers have been doing for years. Want to express an opinion, fine. Do underhanded things, not fine. It is about your ethics or lack of them.

Belén Cavagión S. Korean entertainers don’t mess with foreign politics. Mainstream music in most countries does not mess with politics. American mainstream singers now rarely do protest music. Instead they politicized award shows, just like Hollywood. I don’t want entertainers telling me what I should be believing instead of happily accepting the awards we helped them earn. They can get on many a talk show to sermonize. The Vietnam Confluct (was not declared a war) began when I was about 13. We had plenty of protest music and comics willing to poke both sides. Nary a comic has dared make fun of Democrats on tv for decades. That is a “No” to me. Nobody is perfect and they all do stupid shit. Like Pelosi and that group wearing a Kente scarf while kneeling. A Ghanaian woman posted a short KZbin video criticizing them for wearing something none of them had a right to wear. I did some research and found out that the Ashanti tribe was actively involved in the slave trade. Got wealthy and stronger. As did quite a few black tribes even before Chris tripped over an Island. Muslim slave trade had been going on for about 800 years by then. If you have the stomach for some really gruesome information do a search for “Slavery in Africa” on the web. The last country to ban slavery, on paper, was a Western African country. 2005. So, those Dems were committing real culture appropriation and it is from a tribe that sold many Africans. Ignorance at it’s finest.

It's an expression of art and in a democracy you are free to use your art to comment on politics, if it's not your cup of tea there's other music you can listen to (like kpop lol). I personally found it much more disturbing during the Hong Kong protests coverage that some idols took a stance in favour of the police to ensure future business prospects, but I also understand why they did it. Misdirected or not, at least this time the kpop fandoms achieved something slightly more meaningful than inflating stream numbers.

One of the reason the 2nd wave was bigger than the first was because people were tired of dealing with it, they let their guard down and stopped taking it seriously. My mom who is a nurse is legit very worried for the fall when both the pandemic and regular cold and flu season line up. Also, it's only a very small percentage of people in most countries that have gotten it yet. Some important context and extra explanation that was edited out. (more to be spoken about in the aftershow) - agreeing to culture and politics being detached to 'SOME EXTENT': of course 'ITS NOT COMPLETELY DETACHED(duh like who doesnt know this)' but there is a mass majority of Koreans that think that way, because many of them want it to be that way and use ex) Kpop as an escape from daily life and struggles. Culturally the Korean entertainment business is already formed/conditioned in that way and you will rarely see Kpop artists or celebrities talking about politics in their work or shows. Plus the artists themselves are either not educated nor comfortable on speaking about these issues, so they themselves(or the labels) detach from politics. (twitter.com/hyunsuinseoul/status/1275040980547203072?s=20 thought this was just funny) / + and yes i know there are exceptions... before you come at me, but lets just speak in general here. -economy being first in the pandemic : OF COURSE ITS NOT FIRST. SAFETY AND LIVES ARE. But my comment was edited out, that I was talking about, 'in this current context/situation(restricted to S.Korea), where we only have a few spikes and positive cases recently (like 0-5 per day), when some countries reportedly are having zero per day, when our health-care system is good enough to cover the few spikes, I think it's about time to prioritize the economy. We can't shut down education, businesses and everything forever. Small business owners and their families that invested their whole life savings to establish a business have already lost their everythings, thousands of people have lost jobs and are struggling with no income for months, entire sectors of businesses like tourism are falling down and more.. The more we neglect economy it's gonna cause major damage to numerous people out there. I'm sure the Korean society has the capacity to simultaneously handle 1-5 cases per day(which are decreasing), AND also give more concentration on reviving the economy at the same time. Which is what is happening by the gov and politicians. Everyone is already out spending, going to work, using public transportation (being cautious). BECAUSE? we need to save the economy = society. Above is what I meant. Not when the COVID-19 is PEAKING and we have 10,000 cases per day and people are dying because of a shortage of hospital beds(maybe this is still ongoing in some countries in South America, but not Korea). The gov. of Korea and the mayor of Seoul agrees and that's why social distancing was leveled down. The mayor of Seoul stated that if we have more than 30 cases a day, he would again level up the social distancing protocol. I think this is pretty rational and practical behavior. -about the covid virus ending in 3 months and resuming offline concerts - i said i was being extremely optimistic, just like how danny was being extremely pessimistic on the Corona parties.. and HOPED that it would end within the year.

Like Danny said, concerts happening is going to be a buffet feast for the virus that shall not be named! To somewhat keep it safe, they would have to drastically reduce the amount of tickets they could sell, constant patrolling to insure people keep masks on (which is going to get hot as hell), and having to check temperatures of EVERY PERSON that comes into the venue which means they would probably need more staff for events. There is a lot to factor in and consider for them to have concerts without seeing huge spikes of cases again. They don't want anymore Itaewon-like incidents then a company or Kpop artists is blamed for a case surge. It's a liability I don't know would be worth taking on.

The International kpop fans of Twitter have been previously known as a toxic nuisance. Many examples but mostly spamming fan cams on non related posts like, famous person: talks about grief for a family member's death kpop Twitter: If only they stanned Loona *fan cam of Chuu* That's why I think their support for the BLM movement is great. They're doing something productive by supporting a cause that they care about.

It's the first time a Kpop group performs in my country and it would be just to expensive to travel 6 hours to the next possible location. I only payed about 50 euros instead of 1000+ so I'm definitely going.

The same. I am not going to a concert until it is absolutely safe to go out in a crowd again. No amount of love for music is worth getting oneself infected. The virus is really no joke. I have heard of cases that people recovered but their lungs or other organs are permanently damaged! I found it ironic that Kpop companies still intend to make money under such circumstances. They should be held liable if someone in the audience or the artist gets infected. Breathing deeply, yelling loudly, and singing loudly while dancing can release a lot of viruses into the air. It is really unwise and unethical!

the fact that so many young ppl are engaging with the politics in our country is phenomenal. for a long time the younger generation hasn't been voting, or participating in a huge way in politics- in part because of feelings of "well my voice doesn't matter" so i think that if it takes being a part of a larger community - like kpop fandoms or tiktok - to encourage engagement with politics from a young age can only be beneficial down the road

So I'm a kpop stan and I live in Alabama which as most can guess is full of very Trump supporters and Kpop Antis. But I don't let that stop me I love BTS's message and music as well as many other groups. Sadly a lot of my friends and coworkers are antis, but since the actions of kpop stans in the BLM moment, the hashtag shut downs, and now this many of those same Antis have come to me and told me how they can't believe how hateful they were to kpop. After hearing what we have done to support these moments and change things they have researched kpop and they were amazed at how different it actually is compared to what they thought. So I think we shouldn't stop! Keep doing what you're doing because I see the change in Antis and more! I've never been more proud to be a kpop stan!

1. Culture and art will have political influence, and often times is used as forms to express those views 2. K-Pop fans are fans of the artists not the industry, hence, we can try to shift it into a more "liberal" side such as advocating for gay acceptance, cultural awareness such as no appropriating, reforming regulations that can harm and abuse the artists, as long as kpop companies continue to push their groups globally. 3. "locals" hated our guts on twitter a few weeks ago for spamming with fancams, but seems like they have a newfound respect for kpop fans 4. kpop fandoms still has a lot of colorist, and racist people that harass poc kpop fans and that should also be addressed

As a fan of Kpop for over 20 years, I am so proud of my fellow fans. As for the thought that Kpop and Politics should be kept separate, those that think that way are missing the point. The point is not that they are Kpop fans, but a group of people who believe in social equality and understanding that just happens to also be Kpop fans. It's a community of individuals, trying to do good, with others in the community. Just like Christians mobilize multiple churches for things like charity campaigns, the Kpop community mobilized themselves to make a statement. Declaring in one voice that they believe Black Lives Matter and that they support diversity and equality. Two ideals that Trump rebukes on a daily basis.

OMG! As an American, I have so much to say to this episode but I will try and stick to two topics. 1st) America IS mostly a liberal country. The problem is they are mostly concentrated in the urban centers and our FU electoral college gives more credence to lower population states than urban centers plus gerrymandering is a HUGE problem. Lots to fix here. 2) Music/Culture has always been political. Protest songs and anthems against govt oppression has been part of the American experience since the 19th century. Look it up. It may be a cultural taboo in Korea but not here.

The difference is that culture and politics are directly related in the West, especially America. Our existences are inherently political. In America, being politically involved as a celebrity gets you brownie points an more popularity. It might be a negative thing in Korea for celebs to share their views and speak out, but in America it earns you respect. That's why so many people are starting to say they respect kpop stans and such since we're getting so involved. It's giving us a better reputation in the West. Also, the trolling could have helped some since the numbers were so big, it could have deterred thousands of people from trying to compete for entrance.

It's not just like "kpop fans getting involved in politics" it's just humans wanting humans rights and trying expres it in the way the know the best, even if they're teens Is their country and it's their future. And almost every "political" movement comes from cultural problems is not just connected, they feed one another. Also, maybe koop as an industry is not the best to express liberal opinions but most fandoms just focus on the members and what they say etc so at end what we want it's make it all about humans and less about industry, campaigns etc... so yeah, not everything is perfect, but we try...?

There isn’t 1right that is denied to anyone because of the color of their skin under the constitution. Why don’t you read it first. Then you can look at all the available footage on KZbin from independent journalists and see how “humans” were harassed and threatening with violence even towards elderly people, just because they support Trump, and prevented them from entering the rally. The attitude of the average “trump hater” wouldn’t be allowed in south korea. You are mob-minded and absolutely disrespectful to people older than you. The interviewer was so out of line for asking TXT (literal MINORS) about American politics. Yeonjun handled the situation very well, but he shouldn’t even have been put in that situation because the interviewer should know better than to ask a group of KOREAN idols about American politics. I don’t even know why Bighit put TXT on a conservative news station in the first place.
