He originally wanted to sub-divide the land and build mansions, but when the town council didn't approve his plans he sued them for $50 million. The council settled then allowed him to build a club, there was no lawsuit to allow anyone of any race or religion as they were already allowed. There was only one other club that allowed Jews at the time, and his lawyer convinced him of the value of allowing anyone who could afford the $100,000 a year fee.
