I can provide a bit of context @TheDamageReport. Im US Army Veteran and spent a lot of time with Bradleys and M1 Abrahms Tanks. Back in my decade when i was serving (gulf war era) the M1 was known to consume about 40 gallons of a special mixed diesel fuel JUST TO START it. So logistic challenges may very well play into the decisions to move towards EV. Id also guess this was an environmental choice as the military is a direct extension of the government and various parties have committed to more environmentally friendly measures. Circumstantially there may be two additional factors. EV is likely quieter allowing the tanks to maintain a lower profile through detection. Secondly, an educated guess, there may be benefits with its thermal heat profile again allowing for less detection at range. I wouldn't be surprised if certain other practical factors played a role in the decision.

The military has been considering a hybrid tank (AbramsX) for both tactical & strategic reasons. Tanks are LOUD, even when just sitting passively on watch; an electric mode would allow them to operate quietly for periods of time, a huge tactical advantage. Hybrid engines are more fuel efficient, simplifying logistical demands. And finally: the DoD has recognized climate change & oil dependence as NATIONAL SECURITY THREATS for years… but ofc Trump can’t acknowledge this obvious truth.

The idea of an all-electric tank (with the batteries we have now) is so absurd even to a minimal-understanding layman (like myself) that there's no way the military would sign on (and they haven't). The tank would have to be made mostly of batteries leaving almost no space for anything else including humans, it would be much heavier for less payoff, how would you even charge the thing (for over an hour) on a battlefield...and have you seen what happens to a damaged lithium battery (an inextinguishable inferno)? I believe our tanks would already considered hybrids. The diesel engine in them is used as a generator and the tracks are driven by electric motors.
