It's just put in the vegetable section in the States because that's where they put it back when supermarkets became a thing and the distinction wasn't known widely. So now it's there basically out of tradition simply because that's where people expect to find it and you'd have a ton of people asking your staff where they were if you moved them to the fruit section.
