Good luck from Australia, California. I lived through the bushfire in Canberra in 2003. Our house was right in the worst of it, but as these things go, we survived it intact. I know the feeling, however, of being picked up bodily by a fire tornado and thrown across the yard. I know the grief of seeing your neighbourhood destroyed and the terrible smell that follows. I know the frustration of having no power for weeks, tainted water in the pipes, eerie silence as the birds are all gone. It will get better, but it can never be forgotten. That you are now set for a political shitstorm of cosmic proportions must feel like the final nail. Maybe Humpty Dumpty will fall off his wall into the crowd of all his horses arses and won't be able to be put back together again. Again, good luck and best wishes.

I remember the Canberra fires. They were bad, I remember the fires of I wanna say 1983or 1986 that pretty much burned all around Canberra and Queanbeyan.. BUT unlike the LA Fires.. We have never lost as many structures in a Bush fire as they have.. Sure ours were devastating... but our towns and fire departments do not solely rely on Hydrants to fight fires.. Most of Our fire trucks carry their own water and use the Hydrant system ONLY as a back up source and not a primary but even then.. in 160kph winds.. Not even Our Best Bushfire fighters could fight that sort of fire storm.

There is a reason airborn firefighting wasn't going on as much as usual is obvious. It's the cause of the fires to begin with. WINDS Sure, when you're flying at 5,000 feet gusts of 70-100mph aren't much of a big deal but if you dump thousands of gallons from that height it's doubtful that much of it hits the ground or anywhere you want it to go. When flying low enough to put a payload of water onto a target area those winds are a big hazard. I can see that all the way from Florida.

Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch over Karen Bass being in Ghana, here is the skinny from Foreign Policy: All the foreign trips for which Bass has received criticism are justifiable from viewpoint of LA’s interests. That LA benefits from good relations with Mexico (and consequently of the personal relationships developed during Bass’s visit to Mexico City for President Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration) should go without saying. Her travel to Paris was necessary to facilitate LA’s hosting of the 2028 Olympic Games. Her most recent trip, to Ghana was AT THE REQUEST OF President Joe Biden as part of a diplomatic initiative to bring a critically important African nation closer to the United States. With modern communications technology, Bass was never out of touch with LA’s decision-making apparatus. While remote leadership has its drawbacks, especially with respect to the symbolic requirements of leadership in a time of crisis, Bass was in continuous contact with her deputies and was able to monitor developments in real time. The actual consequences on the ground for her absence are negligible. BTW, A round-trip flight from LA to Ghana means she spent more time in the air than she did in Ghana.
