There are people giving statements to reporters saying that they saw the guy climbing the building and reported to the police and were told to go sit back down. It's entirely possible they are making that up, but there are reports. It will be interesting to see if there's any video evidence you would think at some point if that was true someone would have taken a picture of the guy climbing the building but I guess we'll see.

Is the AR15 legal for hunting in that many states though? My info might be out of date but I seem to remember it being legal for "varmints" like rabbits, jackrabbits, coyotes etc., but for deer and larger, you had to have at least a .270. The 30-30 only being legal due to being grandfathered in.

WHAT? The AR-15 in 223 or 5.56 is the most useless hunting rifle ever made. It's too big for small game, and too small for big game. The round is nothing more than a 22 with lots powder behind it. You told us about the AR but what about the ladder. What type of ladder? one that you can easily put on top of the car and drive for an hour down the road? Is it his dad's ladder? What year was it purchased? Do we have video evidence of the purchase? Home Depot? Lowe's or Contractor's supply house? Is there any video of him carrying the ladder to the roof? Did some just leave the ladder propped up on the side of the building for anyone to use? Was it a permanent ladder? telescopic, or folding? He might have done a lot more accurately with an AR10 which is the .308 version, and still be able to be broken down into 2 pieces for transport, unlike for instance the civilian M14. You'd want to do lots of training and figure out what ammo works best, Lake City Match might not work as accurately as something else. Competitive rifle shooters do a lot of range time and lot testing, and even their own loading.

The AR-15 is owned by Colt, the design is old enough that it can be be made by other companies that then all it something else. Anderson for example makes AM-15s.

I highly suspect that someone is about to get fired over this breach. 2-300 yards to an elevated position, in this case a rooftop and no one noticed a shooter means someone somewhere was not doing their job. Now if it emerges that the shooter was ghillie suited up to match the rooftop material and blend in that would mitigate spotting them but those rooftops, any windows and other vantage points would be swept and secured and monitored constantly but this one was not...somebody messed up I think.
