Politics is a necessary evil, not the primary consideration. The real priority is in choosing the best person for the job, and I truly believe Anita Hill would fit the bill both in terms of qualifications and political considerations as well.

Hill could easily be there for two decades. How many decades would you like to require as a minimum? And what guarantees that a 45-year old nominee won't get killed in a car or plane accident or by cancer or some other disease within the first five years of her presence on the Court? Actually, I think some of the other potential nominees being discussed are probably more qualified than Ms. Hill (who has never served as a judge), and we don't even know if she wants the job (she's currently a professor and social activist). Regardless of all that, you have no idea who I am or whether I'm "distracted by impractical idealism while Republicans prioritize political strategy," so you can drop your patronizing tone at the door.

Republicans would LOVE Biden to appoint a 65-year-old. For context, Clarence Thomas is the longest-serving justice and started when he was 43 back in 1991, and the oldest starting age of any current SCOTUS justice is 55 (Stephen Breyer, Samuel Alito, and Sonia Sotomayor all started at that age). The three currently youngest SCOTUS justices are ALL Trump appointees-Amy at 50, Neil at 54, and Brett at 56. There are currently three living retired SCOTUS justices, and they retired between the ages of 69 and 82. Why potentially forfeit one or two decades to one of Trump's minions when you don't have to?

Nor am I insisting that Anita Hill be the nominee. But I am suggesting that disqualifying someone solely on the basis of her age is neither necessary nor wise nor just. It appears that you are the idealist on this particular issue. And when it comes right down to strategy, where is the concerted effort on the part of the Democrats to a) expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court AND b) impose terms limits (lifetime appointments in this day and age are not what they were back in the 18th Century)? There is no one perfect answer here, so we push for as much progress as possible. It appears that this battle can (and should?) be fought on more than one front.

It seems like Democrats often have a short memory and forget that when they knock down such barriers, they knock down such barriers for Republicans, too. If Democrats can expand the Supreme Court from 9 to 12 (or whatever), what's preventing the next Republicans from simply adding as many additional seats as s/he needs to in order to reestablish a conservative majority? Expanding the Supreme Court would be a short-term solution with long-term unintended consequences. As for lifetime appointments, I don't see how the short-term focus demonstrated in Congress is any better. The whole point of lifetime appointments is to remove the incentive for justices to care about what anyone else thinks. If they have to think about their exit opportunities (which could be quite lucrative), you can guarantee that is going to compromise their judicial independence.
