Hard disagree that extending the settlements is a strategic mistake. That Trump plan from 2020? The Palestinians should have taken it, because their bargaining leverage has PLUMMETED in the last five years. This isn't a moral question, it's a question of how leverage at the bargaining table has shifted. October 7th 2023 was the single greatest strategic mistake in the last 100 years of middle east history. Remember, it's not what you deserve, it's what you can negotiate, and right now, Palestinians have no ability to negotiate. There's a reason that land grab happened in 2024: October 7th, and the subsequent war that has hammered Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, has decimated both the Palestinian ability to do anything about the land grab, and has turned the broader Sunni Arab world, with Saudi Arabia in particular, into a "fuck Palestine" mindset. Israel's position grows stronger by the day, there is no reason for Israel to negotiate unless Trump forces them to, and I don't think he's going to force them to.

A hostile state that started a war and lost does not have a right to exist or dictate the terms. Recent examples are: Russian Empire, Ottoman Empire , Austro-Hungarian, and German empires. That’s the nature of losing wars. Palestine as a state should not exist on that merit alone. Considering that it has not been a sovereign nation in recent history (or ever) it has very little room to negotiate. When you risk it all and lose there is no do over.

One of the main issues both in this video and in real life is that everyone has climbed on the high "settlements are an obstacle to peace" tree, and can't climb down. Even Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, of all people, admitted this in a 2011 Newsweek interview. The truth is, the vast majority of Israeli settlements aren't expanding their footprint significantly (24 km2/yr is a joke, at that pace Israel will control less than half of the area in 100 years - and that's a record year), and they don't preclude the creation of a contiguous Palestinian state. Moreover, over 500,000 people live in these so-called settlements (Israeli definition), and over 900,000 by the international definition. That's quite a bit more than Iceland, similar to Cyprus, and approaching countries like Estonia. Do you expect a country like Cyprus to just stop building homes one day because, say, Turkey doesn't like it? In what universe does this make sense? Maybe the first step to solving the conflict is to safely climb down that tree. Trump might be able to provide the ladder. As for the question of what Trump will do generally: yes, it's likely that he will pressure the PA again. Other US presidents solely pressured Israel, and got nowhere. Some made the conflict much worse through such pressure. Trump already facilitated peace in the region, and will likely do so again. If there is an Israeli normalization with 2-3 more Arab states, Abbas (or his successor) will sing a different tune.

The Palestinian people have had a right to the land which settlements are on since the osslo accords, isreal just went ahead and took it. How do you expect the Palestinians to trust isreal after breaching their own agreements over and over. Settlements are the obstacle to peace in the West Bank that and the constant invasions operated by the IDF, you’re also talking about 2.5 million people in the West Bank that are slowly being squeezed and cut apart from each other, unlike sovereign countries the settlers have a place they can go to.

I don't get this video trying to ignore realities of the world around and paint Israel as a unique case... Isn't this suppose to be international news channel about politics ? Just look at the world and history around, there are plenty of of places with jigsaw puzzle territories, there are plenty of locations were there are minorities without a state, and there is nothing new about pushing populations (not that Israel was intentionally doing it originally), or about grabbing territory by building it up (look about everywhere in the world where there is a border). If anything the folks who used the most brutal ways have reached decades later to the best results, Turkey had over a million Greek natives with it's west costs being Greek (historically Minor Asia was greek/byzantine and constantinopolis just as well but due to the western giving the city to Turkey to keep (was conquered way ago but still) and the Turks then kicking the minorities out of their lands no one talk about those grievances any more, not to mention the eastern border ... lol. This is ironic. The only difference is that Israel is treated with double standards as if it needs to be above all in morals while ignoring the fact that the only true unique case they handle is that their neighbors literally are being raised to kill them ... not even in Cyprus this is the case and the turks just grapped the northern side of the isle by force as a nato member XD. what a joke.... It's idiotic to be talking about two state solutions unless you are antisemtic and want Israel to be destroyed, just as it is idiotic to blame what's going on on the 'settlers'.

12:05 thank you for the opinion but these decisions come from a different mindset, a lot of Israelis disagree because they are under the impression that Palestinians (at least the entire political class) who don't really desire a state, just the demolition of the Jewish state. they think the exitance of a "too independent" Palestinian state (own military, own economy, own education) would just be a call to arms against the Jews. and 7/10 only strengthened that line of thought because Israel saw Gaza as an independent state they gave to Gazans, only for Israel to have to return to it over and over again to stop attacks against Israelis.

my dear josh! nice video, however, you failed to mention that the palestine authorities will never accept any conditions that we lay forward. many years ago ehud barak offered them so much, they refused. ehud olmert offered them no less. the answer was the same. we just can’t make peace with people who really don’t want to make any concessions. sadly, that has been the political situation in israel. regardless of who was in power. and again i wish you wouldn’t call judea and samaria “palestine” since that were never declared as such. when you of the golan heights you never fail to mention their occupation, and so i think the west bank and gaza strip are fitting for a geographical description, whereas palestinians are, at least for now, are a people, not a nation state. at least until they learn to be more flexible, or we will break under the constant terror we are put through since 1920, the year of the first arabs pogroms

yeah... uhh, no. until i am somehow, (and that sure would be nice, but so far even chatbots cannot explain why it would be otherwise...) i will always see Israel (well, Zionism more specifically, but the current nation and political entity of Israel as we know it) as an entity that is encroaching upon land it may have had LEGAL but not the MORAL right to, after having pretty much CHOSEN that option out of many more, just because it felt ITS right to be there and to claim Jerusalem as ITS holy city/capital was worth more than anyone else's, in short... i wish some day someone or something could make more sense of it for me, because it's an awful question to have in my head still i am fortunate enough to be able to not bother too much with since i am too concerned with the OTHER big conflict, that is the West vs authoritarianism in Ukraine vs Russia/Iran/North Korea, but... definitely WAS surprised to hear that your position (i've been watching for years and may have missed a few episodes, but 😅) on VisualPolitik was that Israel should have the right to defend itself against against "against its enemies" "and the terrorist groups that attack it from various sides", based solely on the fact "it is the only democracy" in the area (which, well... might be a brutal and repressive (towards its neighbors) reality, but still is the theory/fact on paper. ;D), but i guess that is Real Politik. ;q. big edit: hopefully i did not misquote you saying (17:04) defending itself "against its enemies" "and the terrorist groups that attack it in various sides", plus, i'd like to argue that the current shape of Israel (which is also likely to remain its form for times to come...) is ALSO a theocracy (for much too great of a part...) to some extent... if that was a bad cut (and you guys do love to do cuts all the time within parts of a sentence/speech!) that i've ever seen, that might've been it😅.
@takingbacktheplanet
@takingbacktheplanet 21 күн бұрын
i just cannot bear that the "West" seems to see all of it as basically legitimized because it is to protect an important bastion of democracy in the area, despite the, to me, clearly disproportionate response Israel took, and all the awful "crimes against humanity" that ensued, including all the hospitals, schools, NGO/UN buildings etc bombed... all the apartment buildings razed to the grounds... the horrors of by now thousands of children and innocent that lost their life, or will otherwise forever suffer from deep trauma and/or have lost limbs, when the whole idea that "we can and will easily destroy Hamas" was never possible to begin with to me, except using a more peaceful and political and gradual approach... 😥i don't think "fighting terrorism with terrorism" is a valid way to go, except in the most extreme scenarios. :(
