Derek Chauvin killing George Floyd was a bad apple. The county coroner attempting to cover it up makes it systemic. The fact that it took them 4 days to reluctantly arrest and charge him makes it systemic.

@houdini97394 жыл бұрын
Yeah there’s definitely a problem with the way the whole law enforcement system is structured, but I feel TERRIBLE when I see people trashing all cops, saying that they’re all terrible. Because I’m sure there’s a huge portion of cops who truly want to help people or, at the very least, know enough to not hurt people. Even if they’re just in it for the benefits and the pension, they’re not unnecessarily cruel and they just do their job. But there are many, many cops who just like holding power and abusing it, and our current system just enables them, because there’s no real punishment or threat. And those cops are always the ones who make it on television. I’m not saying the bad cops are the minority, but I hate it when people generalize all police as being bad.

The irony of the "few bad apples" thing is that it is constantly misused. It's a reference to the pre refrigeration days, when you had to find tricks to preserve things in the absence of cold. One trick was putting those things that lasted a while, such as onions, potatoes, and apples, somewhere cool and dry. They would last quite a while if you did that, but it was very important to routinely inspect them. If one rotted, and you tossed it out fast enough, the harvest as a whole might last quite a while. If you let the rotten apple/onion/potato stay in there too long, the rot would spread and the entire batch would be quickly ruined. In other words, "a few bad apples spoils the bunch" is actually about how if you don't root out corruption with vigorous inspections and actions, it will corrupt an entire system. Which is what has happened with the police. Corruption has spread and become entrenched and is now systemic. The irony is that many people use the "a few bad apples" proverb in a way that completely inverts its message. They say it to suggest that the presence of corrupt individuals is not indicative of systemic corruption. How's that for historical irony?

Growing up in the late 60s, I had no idea what “Racism” meant. I was 6yrs young & walking into my 1st grade classroom. The majority of children were blonde/blue eyes. The only 2 that had different shades were me & Lawana. The teacher sat us in the back of the classroom. Later that day I told my mom, I didn’t want to go back to that classroom. She ask why. I told her the teacher doesn’t like me. The next morning my mom walked me into to the classroom. Realized the issue & took the matter to the principle. The next day I was sitting in the second row with the other kids. That didn’t change anything. The teacher began to mentally abuse me. Eventually she resigned. My mom believed in equality for humanity. Our best leaders start at home. Parents, it’s our responsibility to protect our children from the ignorance of others. I became the same role model to my 3 sons. They respect every human being/ culture/religion. The only thing that will change is believing in yourself. Love all humanity. God makes no mistakes. We are all his chosen. We are all beautiful. Start loving yourself & others will follow that example.

So...a couple of years ago here in the UK, we had a spate of attacks where terrorists would deliberately ram vehicles into pedestrians and those responsible were rightfully condemned as terrorists and murderers. In other words, they did exactly what those police in NY did. Wearing a police uniform while you do it doesn't change what that action makes you, nor does it excuse you from the appropriate punishment - if anything, the punishment should arguably be more severe for a law official to be acting in such a way. And while yes, I could see how a group of very angry people surrounding your car could be scary in the moment, the natural instinct would surely be to back away from the danger, not ram towards it. As Seth said, they should have reversed. Honestly, if Trump wins this next election, I don't see how America can survive four more years without fundamentally ripping itself apart.

@natashagoode5014 жыл бұрын
I'm a cop. In another country. It's murder. I'm also a prosecutor. At work today we were discussing our jurisdiction's equivalent to second-degree murder, which is I assume statutory murder in my country (common law murder here is killing with that precise intent, statutory murder includes intentionally causing serious harm that results in death, serious disregard for human life, etc). We all agreed that we would give statutory murder a run. He conducted an unlawful restraint and refused to remove his knee even when the person in custody was saying he couldn't breathe. And members of the public were begging the police to get off him. And they tried but were threatened with spray (or potentially get shot themselves). When Floyd stopped moving, became unresponsive, the murderer remained on his neck for nearly 3 minutes. He is held to a higher standard than an average person due to op safety and combat training, as well as duty of care. I only saw a short snippet of the footage, however, he did not appear to check on Floyd's welfare or show any concern for Floyd's distress, nor his colleague's repeated requested to get off Floyd's neck and turn him over. So, although I cannot see how first degree (common law) murder would stick (we can't prove that he actually intended to kill Floyd beyond reasonable doubt), however, second-degree should be a strong case. Especially with the CCTV footage from a neighbouring business, and the MoP phone footage of the incident. The BWV on all officers should also be quite telling. I feel somewhat reassured knowing that the murderer would be having a horrible time in custody and will not enjoy his sentence at all. He is a stinking pustule to my profession, the type that sinks into the fabric and you can never quite wash out the odour, no matter how many times you try. It also breaks my heart knowing (and seeing on the street today and yesterday at work) that people don't feel safe, especially around me, a white cop. That is wrong. My presence should be reassuring, help feel safe. I serve and protect, all humans (and actually animals too) within my jurisdiction. To borrow the ethos of our indigenous peoples....I cannot speak for others for that is their words, their knowledge; I can only speak for me. However, I am listening, I am watching, I want to help in any way that I can. Every waterfall begins with a single drop. Stay safe, be kind to each other. :)

@jayv97794 жыл бұрын
@@jeremysmith9694 Tanks in fact are not needed. This comes down to the goal of the police. Police are there to deescalate a situation, a tank does the opposite. Military on the other hand is designed to show overwhelming firepower superiority. So a tank is suited to military use. If the police need a tank they can ask for the governor to bring in the National Guard. There is a system that is in place so that each level can do their job. Some police forces have decided to act like military units which will inevitably bring a militaristic response. It doesn't help that we have so many defense contractors that if they can't sell their gear to the military they sell it to the police. A tank means that you have given up on being police and want to be a military. If a force treats the people like an enemy they will act like one. This is all from the lack of true action by the leaders in the country now and in the past who have not taken proactive action to correct how some police interact with society. We need to learn from other countries who police more effectively than we do with far less firepower. They understand the dynamic and that tanks are not an intelligent solution.

When governors asked people to limit social gatherings to slow the spread of disease, many called it suppression. When people protest the cruel and excessive force that lead to the death of a human being by law enforcement, these same people want to use force to shut them up. You, sir, showed you are not for rights or decency. I am in no ways excusing the looting or violence, but I will not be naive enough to believe there are no opportunists taking advantage of this chaos to commit crimes. The difference in treatment between those "I need to go to my hair salon!" protestors - who also hung effigies of the governor of Michigan - and the way they treat the protestors who are fighting against police brutality towards the black community and several other injustices is staggering. It really feels like the police are escalating on purpose, probably under orders, in order to create an environment that will allow for severe draconian measures and implementation of cracking down reminiscent of fascist countries. If the people don't stand up even more _now,_ we are going to be in a _world_ of hurt. The police began the escalation, and while I don't agree with the looting et al, the protestors need to respond in kind in order to show that the _people_ control this country. Not the so-called "protectors" that, in general, have done nothing so far in decades in terms of what they've been sworn to do. I know there are good police out there, but the vast majority are bad apples; change needs to happen _immediately._

No wonder the system is flawed: in Europe police training is about 2-4 years, in US it's like 15- 20 weeks. That's not nearly enough to learn everything you need to know about about your job: serving and protecting. From using force to peacefully engaging with citizens. US needs to put more money and focus on police training (and rooting out the "bad apples" in the process) and less money on arming them with freaking TANKS.

There are still things that are overlooked or are wrong of course, but germany has had a long and very thorough conversation on how to control the police force, how to educate them, how to make sure that they serve the people. I was reminded of the rest of the phrase today, thanks to an educated person in an online forum I read. "A few bad apples spoil the barrel." Bad apples ruin the *entire* barrel. You can't pick them out and everything's okay, the whole barrel is ruined because of the rot they quickly spread. Corrupt people can't exist alongside honest people, because honest people threaten to expose and punish them. They must either corrupt the honest, or expel them. A few "bad apples" visible in the police force means the entire force is suspect and must be thoroughly investigated. Maybe they're not all corrupted, but until you know, you must fully investigate each and every one. Any found to be corrupt must be fully prosecuted and honesty must be restored, or the rot will seep back in.

K I randomly came across this video and I must say This reality is delivered very well. I like the funny run offs but the honesty and what should be common sense for people(evidently not everyone) so thanks for the easy to watch dose of reality. Keep it up😁

If cities like New York spent more on Departments of Health, homelessness, housing, youth services, and community, they would find they wouldn't need to spend so much on policing. Invest in cities and you reduce crime.

Homelessness problem is a mental health issue, housing for them won’t fix it, need more mental health outreach, but yeah totally agree otherwise

R B Homelessness is not strictly a mental health issue. It's natural to experience depression and anxiety when homeless, but sometimes that's temporary and resolves itself with employment, short-term counselling, and stable housing. That being said, yes many homeless do experience lasting mental illness or dual diagnosis, requiring long-term treatment and supervision in specialized housing. Some will even graduate to independence again. Yes, we do need more mental health outreach, but it's a mistake to put all homeless people into the same basket. Be well. ✌️🍀

You're talking common sense. Something sorely missing in the departments of justice and DC.

When libertarians tell me how wonderful and rich society would be if only we let the free market rule, I ask them for examples of nations where that has happened, or failing that, good studies which show that nations closer to their ideal are outcompeting the rest of the world. They have never once responded to that challenge; they want to transform a society with no evidence that it would produce the benefits they hope for, except their intuitions and feelings. I have the same even-handed challenge for hypotheses like yours (which appeals to me much more than the libertarian vision, btw). I hope that you understand that you are advancing a hypothesis about society, not listing a proven fact of nature. What evidence support or calls into question that hypothesis? Have you seen a relatively objective study of cities which have substantially reduced their need for police as they ramped up the services you suggest? Or again, a study showing that those cities coming closest to your ideals are doing meaningfully better than those who do not? (Cherry picked anecdotal accounts and isolated examples don't work, we need broad statistics). As I say, it's an attractive hypothesis for me personally, but that doesn't make it true. If we can show objectively that it's very likely true, we can work to convince folks of it. But if it's just an intuition or feelings, we are going to remain stuck in a morass of subjectivity, because other people have different intuitions about what would happen. Do cities which spend more on social services actually reduce their need for police, statistically? I don't pretend to know, but I'm very open to balanced analysis and statistics.

"If you don't like that, then call the cops, because chances are they're us" - The Mitchell Trio, "Friendly Liberal Neighborhood Ku Klux Klan," 1967 Oh, but racism in the police department has gotten BETTER since the sixties, right? I mean, we never actually did anything about it, but... it just sort of quietly disappeared. Like a miracle, when the weather got warmer.

YES it has. But your gonna stay blind to the facts and statistics and throw out every conspiracy theory you can. It has gotten better because its gotten quieter we cant change if someone is already racist but we can can and continue to change systematic racism

This whole XYZ Lives Matter mantra needs to change. Souls have no color, race, religion or creed. Souls are pure light. What is light? All colors coming together and reflecting together to form the beautiful light that reveals our world to our eyes. All souls matter. Without color there is no rainbow. Just darkness.

"A few bad apples" wouldn't cover the situation where 3 officers stand guard for the 4th while he commits slow ritual murder in broad daylight, in front of video cameras. Somehow, those three other officers considered their role to be the correct and supported policy of their department. In addition to charging them with accessory to murder, like any other citizen would be, start firing everyone up their chain of command until you get all the people that enabled that mentality. Then do an exhaustive performance review of every employee who worked for any of those people. You can't have one cold blooded murderer and three misguided accessories working the streets together, just by coincidence.

David Erickson the police officers were 100% in the wrong, but ritual isn’t really the right word to describe George Floyd’s murder.

@@masteroogway8916 I live outside Minneapolis and that's the word that keeps coming to mind when I watch that video. He knelt on that man's neck and slowly applied pressure until the man died. He never looked down at George Floyd, and kept that freaking smug look on his face while staring at the crowd. Maybe there's an official definition of 'ritual murder' that doesn't apply here, but as I have been following this, that description seems apt to me.
