Denmark is not holding Greenland back. If greenlanders vote for independence, they will get it. The problem is that Greenland is not self-sustainable economically and is heavily dependent on financial support from Denmark. It would be interesting to hear realistic plans for economic independence.

Denmark 'scaring' Greenlanders not to persue independence is something of a stretch. 60% of the budget is paid by Denmark and will logically not continue with full independence, which is the reason it hasn't been persued. Developing resources is entirely a Greenlandic decision. They've (wisely) chosen not to for environmental concerns. Denmark is not involved in the decision. The modern fishing fleet he emphazises is also heavily subsidized by Denmark. Sure, Denmark has treated Greenlanders poorly in the past, but since 1979 has bent backwards to make up for it. The lack of appreciation is mindboggling. That said it seems Times Radio and others deliberately chooses critics of Denmark to be voices for Greenland. Pretty distasteful.

Greenland with out Denmark is naive ignorant idea, the Greenlanders will be eaten alive by USA. If they are lucky they get some money att least, but they have no future! No matter what happens with Greenland, I think Trump has started the end of NATO, the trust of US will be gone among smaller countries. First problem for countries like Denmark is to get US out of the territory and away from America militarily equipment! Denmark needs to be less dependent on trade with US as well.

As a Dane, hearing the "danish politicians scare greenlanders", that just felt out of left field. When China previously showed a lot of interest in Greenland, the Greenlanders pressed for independence, since mining all the resources would secure them financially. But China decided that it was too expensive to start such an operation in that weather/terrain, and backed down with their deals. When that happened, the Greenlanders came back saying that they didn't want independence anyway, and wanted to stay as a part of Denmark.

The Faroe Islands tried to become independent in year 2000. They wanted 15 years of financial support and double citizen ship. The offer was 4 years of financial support and no double citizenship so the negotiation ended in 5 mins. Greenland has 60 inhabited places and 56000 citizens. The unemployment rate is 30% and severe social problems. Denmark runs several administrative areas on behalf of Greenland because they do not have the resources themselves. Rare earth metals has about 4 customers and the market is run by China. 1 goldmine can’t make everyone rich and the Greenlanders refused to mine uranium which ended an Australian effort. The Danish government is now being sued for about USD 10 bln US. All in all do not believe everything that is being said by none official spokes persons. Feel free to fact check me..

Greenland became part of Denmark due to historical events and political decisions. Denmark and Greenland have a long history dating back to the 10th century when Norse explorers settled in Greenland. However, official Danish colonization of Greenland began in the 18th century with expeditions funded by the Danish king. In 1814, when Denmark and Norway separated, Greenland became Danish territory. It was fully integrated into the Danish state in 1953 under the Constitution of Denmark, which made the people in Greenland citizens of Denmark.

Pele Broberg is right. Greenland has had one of the most modern fishing fleets in the world. Polar Seafood's trawlers are about 120 m/+300 feet in length, and floating fish factories earn Greenland most of its income. Unfortunatly, the easiest mined rare earth ores is laced with uranium, posing a health risk for some 10.000 people in south Greenland, and the ISUA iron ore and the Black Angle lead/zinc/silver ore is hampered by low ore prices, so right now mining is less possible. Same with some prospect finds, including oil, being in the high arctics with temperatures and winds much worse than ever in Prudhoe Bay or Russian arctics. It is -50 degr F or -45 degr C most of the winter.
