My sister lost her home in the Palisades- their whole neighborhood on the bluffs is gone. They built the home 30 years ago- raised four kids there (one still at home), and have opened their home and graciously hosted hundreds and hundreds of people from all over. In addition to the many visits and holidays they hosted, they also invited my son and me (and two large dogs) to live there over a summer when I struggled to find a rental home following an unexpected divorce. I share this because along with each home you see destroyed and each family devastated, there are a thousand stories connected to that individual home. And now the thousands of displaced traumatized folks "compete" to find a space to live. I live in Oregon and chose to stream only local trusted news outlets and reporters on the ground and have been grateful for them all. The requirement for a clean police record exists for very logical reasons and is about protecting people and ensuring trust in various roles. For example, would you want someone convicted of rape to work in a kindergarten? Of course not. Similarly, in other areas, you wouldn’t want to hire an economist convicted of embezzlement to manage finances. These examples illustrate why the requirement for a clean record is necessary in certain positions and sectors.

I must say as a conservationist during my career, there were several scenarios that allowed these huge L.A. County mega-fires to occur. Along with Climate Change that directly influenced the threat of these huge mega-fires, we have ignored the very flammable Chaparral foothill habitat and above that, the Yellow-Pine forest habitat, that developers were allowed to build homes into. We need to GET AWAY from building high-density homes into very dry biosystems such as those that surround Los Angeles. ALSO, L.A. has never had the adequate infrastructure (pipelines, hydraulic systems to fire hydrants etc) to combat these huge fires that have burned in many different communities. L.A. was only prepared to fight localized community related fires, not these huge mega-fires!! FINALLY, in January, typically the reservoirs are kept low in readiness for the rains and snows that USUALLY come in January to April! BUT with climate change, the fire season is year around now.

Yes, thank you for this insight. I keep seeing blame being slung at Newsom and Bass and while I'm not going to pretend to know all of what they have or have not been doing for fire prevention, I do know that the conditions for this crisis are far more complex and longstanding than either of their tenures. I grew up in Northern California, lived in LA County and Riverside County, watched the El Dorado fire burn from my backyard in the valley. I experienced the summers getting hotter and longer, less and less rainfall. I drove by prescribed CalFire burns. I know that the state has been taking measures to prevent fires and to do better at controlling them when they do start. It's always easy after the fact to say what could be done, much harder to actually make those things happen. So much red tape. Time, money, aging infrastructure, changing climate, bizarre weather, people -- all of these things are factors that too many seem to be overlooking. At this point I'm less concerned with what should have been done and who's to blame than what we can do to make sure it doesn't happen again.

@ Very good comments. Trying to find blame in others does no good. We are ALL at fault! The only way we can ‘make sure it doesn’t happen again’ is by not allowing building on hillsides or fire-prone areas in So CA, and all the west for that matter, spend millions of dollars to construct more infrastructure, which most taxpayers probably cannot do, and work towards controlling climate change. All of which are hard to do.
