Well done Fab. I was a career Ground/Simulator/Training Captain and Examiner on Bombardier products. Scenario based training is far more effective and relevant than a typical recurrent program.

I was a pilot for this engineer who is now a good friend. He always said regarding training, when you’re in the middle of the emergency that’s not the time to write the check to send your pilots for training.

Sounds like Dan Gryder’s push for AQP in general aviation. Good to hear it from another professional pilot.

makes a lot of sense to fly in commercial flights

Having been a pilot since 1987, and flown for the Airlines FK27, A330, A340, B737, B777 and then private PC12, Lear 45, Global 6000. I noticed a very glaring problem with regards to training. The training providers in private aviation treat the pilots they are training as paying clients which they are. However I found too my surprise that the training providers are very reticent to bring up, lets call them "operational problems" with there clients and also do not really recommend remedial training. The difference with the airlines, the pilots are generally employees of the airline and the standards are very well defined and most training departments have no qualms about pointing out deficiencies and recommending remedial training if so required as the trainee pilots are employees, not there clients. I do feel that this may let some "bad apples" fall through the cracks in private aviation. Just a observation.

some valid points, thanks. One airline I worked for our Chief Pilot's philosophy was a big T on Training and a small T on testing. He was all about us all improving and using the simulator as a true training device and not a testing device to terrorize pilots in.

Please let me know where you can get a B737 type rating for 15K TODAY. Navy pilot here. In 1990 I got a B737 type for 13K to improve my chances for getting an airline job because the market was so tight.

Lots of places in the US where both an A320 or B737 rating can be done for $15K and sometimes lower.

Negative. Pilots flying, be it a Citation or a B744 should be trained, and held to the same standard. Whether flying PAX or Cargo, makes no difference. One does not require an ATP, nor a COMM to be typed in a jet. However the TCE or DPE must hold such pilots to the same standard in Technical and Non-technical skills.

Most airlines will run an aircraft through one D check, when the second D check comes around they will analyze the costs to run the D check and how much income the aircraft will produce effectively without a lot of down time and is there a demand for use of that aircraft. Now if the aircraft is being used less for an airlines plans of operations then they will consider selling the aircraft to another carrier who might better use the aircraft. As for 757’s and 767’s ( not to mention the 747 series ) those aircraft are in demand for freighters so airlines will retire the aircraft and sell it off to a freighter company or to companies that convert PAX aircraft to freighters. They will take the aircraft in and strip it down for the D check and correct any anomalies with the airframe and systems. At this point the do not need to reinstall passenger systems but instead install loading doors needed for the main level conversion. Additional structural components will be added to accommodate the loads of the freighter floor system as well as the floor. Passenger equipment removed from the aircraft may go back to the carrier if they need it for their spares inventory or it may be sold as is with documents from what airframe it was removed from ( traceability is a must if sold as replacement parts even if it goes to a refurbishment contractor.)

@@BizJetTVit depends on the type of aircraft, commercial aircraft are far more expensive than biz jets or private aircraft. A major reason why many Lear 35’s wind up in aircraft bone yards, engines are way too expensive to refurbish and recertify exceeding the cost of an airframe. It’s cheaper for a company to "write off" the aircraft from their inventory and sell it for spares than to refurb the engines. There were several individuals who purchased a pair of Beech Starship Ones, they were API's who brought the aircraft to flying condition and recertified it as EXPERIMENTAL for their own use. In the USA there have been a few individual who went on and acquired the API certification and bought the aircraft of their dreams but do their own work as they do not trust some of the shops doing repairs or annuals. Their philosophy is "if I am flying that aircraft I know what I fixed is correct and cannot blame someone else if something goes wrong".

Before he became POTUS he was running at least 3 aircraft types in his fleet for a long long time so I think he's letting the pro's do what they do. I'm sure we'd be hearing from an ex-pilot if he put them at risk or treated them with contempt or disrespect. Trump isn't the know-it-all type, just look at how many questions he asks people about things he wants to learn more about.
