I'm old enough to remember the controversy back in late 1970s concerning the canal. The elephant in the room has always been the security of the canal. The Panama Canal was absolutely vital to the US in WW2. The US was concerned about what might happen to canal given the politican instability of Panama. This is far more important than the financial aspects. We are very nervous about China being anywhere near to whole area. Of course the Chinese know this and that is precisely why they want to become involved in the area. It's the security stupid.

Why would the Panamanians changes their rates for traffic through the Canal? They have to cover their operational costs. They just built last decade a new set of locks expanding the Canal so largest ships come through including natural gas ships that transport American natural gas to other countries. They need to recoup those cost. One would imagine that business people understand this. Asking them To change their rates is for all purposes almost as imposing sanctions on Panama. The US already invaded Panama once. Trust me, it won’t happen again. The other question is how this helps the regular guy on the street?
@stevebutler8127 сағат бұрын
While much of the Canal’s original legislation expired upon turnover of the Canal to Panama, one key treaty relevant to U.S. and Chinese influence in the Canal remains active with no expiration date. The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal, or the Neutrality Treaty, between Panama and the United States guarantees permanent neutrality of the Canal with fair access for all nations and nondiscriminatory tolls. Only Panama may operate the Canal or maintain military installations in Panamanian territory. The United States, however, reserved the right to exert military force in defense of the Panama Canal against any threat to its neutrality. Any interpreted Chinese threat to the Canal’s neutrality could activate the U.S. forces through this treaty, meaning current and future Chinese interventions should be calculated with this potential response in mind
@LLQ4233 сағат бұрын
In such case the US would have to take retaliatory measures against China should the need arise but he can't not simply come out and threaten the sovereignty of an independent nation based on assumptions of what he think might end up happening in the future in another country. The 1977 Torrijos-Carter treaty laid out a timetable for transfer of the canal, leading to a complete handover of all lands and buildings in the canal area to Panama. The most immediate consequence of this treaty was that the Canal Zone, as an entity, ceased to exist on October 1, 1979. The final phase of the treaty was completed on December 31, 1999. On this date, the United States relinquished control of the Panama Canal and all areas in what had been the Panama Canal Zone
