Hope people understand that tolls are typically auctioned so it is the market that is setting rates. One of the big reasons why canal tolls are so high is due to the fact that there has been a serious drought in Panama (primarily due to rainforest deforestation) causing transit to be severely restricted due to the amount of water available to transit ships. Part of the base toll increase to is to help fund increased water capability to improve traffic (and trade!). Trump telling Panama to lower rates is like telling a company to lower their stock price or lower their price.

As a Panamanian, we have always supported President Trump because we are a conservative country, so we love his anti-woke policies. Having said that, this is a very bad look for him right here, picking on a nation of only 4 million people, that have always been friendly with the U.S. and doesn't have any history of violent or criminal activity. The U.S. managed, operated and benefited financially from the Canal for almost 100 years. I’m sure that, with all the profits the U.S. got during that time span, it paid its cost, and then some. We were invaded and bombed by the U.S. in 1989, had to rebuild our country and, after that, have managed the Canal in an excellent way. The Canal hasn’t been mismanaged and it’s actually been improved during the past few years with the construction of a wider set of locks while expanding the site. Given the timing of his statements, they were in very bad taste, since December 20th was the anniversary of the U.S. invasion (also known as Operation "Just Cause") and is a day of sorrow and reflection for us here in Panama, as we saw many of our countrymen die during the bombings. On top of that, this December 31st will mark the 25th Anniversary of Panama running the Canal, having turned it into a profitable business and tourist attraction both at once. On a side note, why do Panamanians need a visa to enter the U.S. with the close history both nations have had, while other countries such as Brazil and Chile don’t have to meet such requirements? I'd say we are the ones who got a raw deal. Maybe the tariffs we charge the U.S. can be lowered while reaching an agreement on this whole visa issue.
