I think this is actually a decent way for countries (and companies to a large degree) to decouple - get as much of your energy as you can by not relying on deliveries from others. It’s because China is diverting from oil when it comes to their energy mix so big oil is in trouble as they face demand destruction. Now big oil lobbied to make up for that loss and threaten us europeans, nevermind how wronged we’ve been so far. We’re headed for increasingly hard times, but at least there’s better chance the european nations would extrapolate themselves from the US grapple, put forward indipendent industrial policies and rise again.

Unpopular reality for trump fans: Tariffs are a way for America to tax it’s own citizens for imported goods.
@Miller-k4r
@Miller-k4r Сағат бұрын
It bogles my mind that nobody is realizing that. Tariffs tax YOU, when you try to import you pay more, as a company or individual, and that money goes to the state, it is a tax on YOU not on foreign companies. As a consequence you are forced to buy domestic instead of getting the best deal. Tariffs only benefit collectives standing to lose from free trade like uncompetitive sectors (US agriculture vs 3rd world agriculture) and of course the state itself which reaps massive taxes from it.

The EU runs a trade deficit with the US, sure. But.. The EU has 8 strategic dependencies from the US. But the US has 32 strategic dependencies from the EU, almost all chemical and pharmaceutical. A trade war wouldn't benefit either party. I'm not sure why this is being proposed, especially at a time when US GDP growth is really good.

The whole “trade imbalance to USA” is a partial story or a scam Because in services USA have the upper hand not only with Europe but practically almost whole World: finance industry, Internet services (Google, YT, Amazon, twitter/X; look what they’re doing to TikTok), and the judiciary in a number of cases specially with Latin America (look vulture funds and Argentina).

Most European nations do pay for their own security. And most countries in NATO meet the 2% suggested threshold of spending. Just because the US has a base in another country does not mean we are paying for their defense. It is a strategic way for the US to enforce its power on a global scale in a minute's notice. Most US bases in foreign countries are leased so we are actually paying them for their land.
