That is the net effect, there is much more nuance than that though. But to sum it up - we are being ripped off by everybody. Everybody wants to continue to rip us off, so tariffs actually give us incredible leverage, if done properly.

USA gets discounted rates on Canadian resources such as oil. The deficit with Canada that Trump is refering is in fact revevue and jobs for US as those resources are transformed into products. Sk this will increase the products of both imported products and products made in USA. In addition the tarrifs with Canada and Mexico can disrupt negatively the interconnected north america supply chain, hence decreasing its global productivity . And Yes general tarrifs are inflationary. Tarrifs need to be strategically planned and be aligned with economic development.

You put tariffs, they retaliate. American dollar high, yen, peso, Canadian dollar low it makes American exports extremely unaffordable. Tariffs are just a fancy name for a tax. It will make everything more expensive and cause inflation. Plus if manufacturers move their production to USA, it is impossible to have lower prices compared to Mexico or China. Majority of the money collected from tariffs are going to be used as subsidies to cut the losses.
