His dad went bust when he was a child, lost their home and (back in declining Scranton, living with grandparents, then in Delaware) scrabbled around for a few years getting low-end, short-term jobs. He did regain a successful, middle class life, but it was a shock and a struggle that Biden remembers.

In many European countries they have safeguards. i.e. a company must prove a reason why a person is "let go". There is no "fire at will". In the US you can be let go and there are no repercussions or questions asked of the company. If you have a bad employee generally in the UK for example they have to be censured for a specific failing several times and then you can legally fire them. If the company goes bankrupt that's a different scenario. But employees have more rights abroad.

My company sent us a letter saying that although we had short-notice shift changes, we would not be paid an on-call rate, because this wasn’t on-call, and to prove it we had no work mobile phone. At the same time they were slyly sliding new hires into actual on-call working. Then they began publicly scolding people for being more than one hour from work during our “unprotected” days off (one day a week). Then I got a call one morning eight hours after my last shift telling me to be at work within the hour. I said I would consider an on-call service if they would pay me an on-call rate. “We’ll see about this!” my boss said. Nothing happened for three months and suddenly my boss notified me that she wanted a meeting. This was in a booked room. No reason given. But I knew how sly she was, and turned up with a union rep. Her jaw literally dropped. She recovered and told me to expect a letter summoning me to a disciplinary meeting, yet could not say what the topic was. The letter did not explain. At the meeting, they came up with extremely vague, accusatory stuff about “attitude” that was not poor colleague relations, timekeeping, productivity, or anything at all concrete. In later meetings they started making xxxxt up. I lodged a grievance, let them know I had the paperwork showing their stories contradicted one another, and that I was eager to go to industrial tribunal - and left after six months off on full pay, having signed an NDA with two years take-home pay. I know that other people were not so alert and left with nervous breakdowns and bad references instead. That would have been me if I was a US worker.
