In watching what I call denial channels, I make data based comments. On one occasion a commenter tried to justify fossil fuels as more efficient by comparing the total process of electrical generation. My response was to compare the total resources needed. For fossil fuels I listed mining/drilling, transportation, refining and burning of fossil fuels. This included a loss of two thirds of the energy as waste heat. Renewables like wind and solar, are collected and distributed as electricity by wire directly to the user. Bottom line, my comment was erased. This seems to happen a lot.
@ziploc200023 күн бұрын
It's really easy to generate electricity by a variety of methods, many of them totally clean at the point of generation. Not so with fossil fuels. No. What they hate is the people and policies enforced by the increasingly tyrannical governments. This civilization, in its current form with the people living very well compared to the last 5,000 years was built with carbon and nuclear fuels. Yet the against carbon fuels crowd are living very well from the use of carbon/nuclear fuels. The crowd degrades both the fuel use and those who don't embrace their carbon-free ideology. Building of green technology including wind/solar/battery wouldn't even happen without fossil/nuclear fuels. It took 5000+ years of human existence for the population to reach 1 billion in 1800. Another 125 years to reach 2 billion and another 100 years to hit 8 billion. Without the fossil/nuclear fuels it never could have occurred. If the technologies are profitable in the free market let them stand on their own. If not let them die for another day. The earth is not going to burn up or overheat to kill the human race or anything near that. I remember when global cooling was predicted by the "scientists" and global elites. And the last 30 years it's been global warning. And none of the predictions came to fruition. When a scientist can predict the weather 1 day or a week out with 99% certainty, I might listen. Until then don't waste your energy or my tax dollars prophesizing what might happen.

Are you performing a 1:1 comparison though? Typically the datasets for solar and wind are just in the generation of energy not the extraction, processing, manufacturing of the resources. Wind turbines are higher for deaths upon generation, but even though we should continue to develop solar, there are REAL environmental hazards with solar manufacturing that id argue people are really ignorant of. Unless its changed in the last 4 years, the EPA to my knowledge still has zero specific regulatory capacity over solar manufacturing and the production of silicon tetrachloride, dichlorisilane, sulfur hexafluoride as well as GHG chlorofluorocarbons typcially defined under E-waste. As a result this is handled at the state level, of which only 1 state even has reporting of chemical wastes of this nature. Why isnt this talked about or known? Because it requires a understanding of how solar panels are actually manufactured. These are synthetic materias that do not occur naturally in nature to meet the needs of society. Now does this mean that their risk is greater than that of fossil fuels? No absolutely not. But it is dangerous to give industries a clear path on the belief that they are green when in reaity that is 100% a PR claim not supported by science.
@dcochran1219 күн бұрын
@@MattBuild4 I was responding to the impact on birds from wind turbines in specific, but if you are going to add the environmental impact of wind and solar equipment manufacturing into the calculation be sure to add the impact from fossil fuel refining equipment into the other side. Nothing is absolutely green, but we should prioritize products and processes that are less harmful to the environment, and demand continuous improvement of those that become dominant (which is happening with wind and solar).
@sjsomething493617 күн бұрын
@ I definitely agree that the chemicals used in production of solar panels should be regulated, the same as any industry that is using potentially hazardous chemicals, from cradle to grave. That is one of the benefits of solar panels, is that because it is a physical product its entire lifecycle can be controlled, including disposal. If that *is not happening* then it should be, and we should all definitely be writing to our representatives to enact those changes. As you’ve noted, just because the generation method is not polluting doesn’t mean that the manufacturing process is rainbows and unicorns, but thankfully those would be known risks that can be addressed (and should be) if the will is there. I’m in Canada and I see that there are a few (very few it seems) Canadian manufacturers, I’ll send an email about this to the politicians representing my district (called ridings here in Canada) as well as the minister of Industry Canada to see what kinds of regulations we actually have.

I think the fuss over the windmills is certainly a bit overblown, but I think it's the scale of the numbers people struggle with. There were roughly ~71 thousand windmills in the US (as of 2022) vs 100 million cats. So on a per capita basis the numbers don't seem as crazy. At the high end of 1 million birds killed by windmills each year in the US, so at the high end like 14 birds per year, where the cats kill rouhly 24 per year each. Telling someone the average windmill would kill as many as 14 birds per year isn't very impactful though so they talk about the big numbers. Soemthing like 1 billion birds die per year flying into glass windows, but Trump as a real estate developer isn't suggesting they stop making buildings.
@jerryblackbird814922 күн бұрын
@@CrypticFoxGaming I agree with the argument when talking about plain numbers. But we need to be careful since windmills kill different species of birds than cats do, for example windmills also kill eagles while cats don't. So they have different impact on wildlife.

A necropsy determined that the cause of death for the Humpback whale that washed up on Lido Beach was multiple blunt force dramas consistent with a vessel strike, including multiple skull fractures. While vessel strikes and entanglements in fishing gear are known leading causes of whale deaths, little is done to mitigate these factors. However, even without any proven causal link with offshore energy development or generation, groups that are demonstrably against offshore wind endlessly repeat the falsehood that wind turbines and/or their construction results in whale deaths. That is estimated time span for the implementation of EVs and HPs. We have had much higher growth rates in the later half of the 20th century alone. In my household, all of our cars are electric-my wife drives a Model Y, and I have a Cybertruck. However, I believe it is not the government’s role to dictate which technologies individuals must adopt. Innovation naturally replaces outdated technologies when better alternatives emerge. Both electric and gas-powered vehicles have their advantages and drawbacks. While electric vehicles suit my needs today, that might not be the case tomorrow. Evolution in technology occurs organically; it can’t be forced by mandates. Regarding Trump’s comments about charging stations, while his wording may not be entirely accurate, there is truth in his criticism of how government funds have been allocated. The program’s spending has been inefficient, with construction costs for participating companies far higher than Tesla’s. For example, Tesla’s chargers reportedly cost between $30,000 to $42,000 each, whereas competitors’ chargers can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000. Notably, Tesla was excluded from the program, despite its proven efficiency.
@plonkster23 күн бұрын
To be fair though, governments rarely dictate a specific technology. What they do, is they mandate a certain efficiency. For example, in my country light bulbs that make less than 90 lumens per watt are banned. The government didn't mandate LEDs. They mandated a level of efficiency, and that pushed manufacturers towards LED (and CFL, at the time) lighting. Doing it this way does not preclude future improvements in the technology: If someone can make an incandescent lamp that can do those levels, then incandescent lamps will make a comeback. The same would be true for electric vehicles. Governments are mandating a certain level of emissions by a certain date (and these can be revised as well). Right now there are just two technologies that have any hope of matching those levels, hydrogen and battery electric, which probably makes it feel like the government is mandating EVs directly. But if we get technical about it: They aren't mandating a specific technology, and the things they are mandating are aimed at the manufacturers, not the consumer. At least not directly. How else do you do this? I mean, if we assume for the sake of argument that we are all agreed that something needs to be done about our climate? The vast majority of people I run into, who argue for less government involvement in this space, also tend to deny that there is any urgency involved. The argument is valid even: If there is no urgency involved, then we should let the market and the consumer dictate the pace! But if there is urgency involved, if this affects the Politikos (the people of the city), then government will probably have to set some goals. Which is what we see, right?
@Yurek_Vigo22 күн бұрын
@ Individuals should have the right to choose which type of vehicle suits their lifestyle, whether an electric or a gasoline powered car. I should be free to drive an ICE car if that’s what I prefer. The government has no right to tell me what kind of car to buy or drive. This government policies are an infringement on personal preference. When governments impose bans on new ICE car sales (as some countries plan for 2035 or earlier) or introduce incentives for EVs while penalizing ICE vehicles (through taxes or fees), is a coercion rather than a fair market decision. The market, not the government, should decide which cars succeed. If electric cars are better, let consumers choose them freely. Such policies unfairly manipulate the market and restrict personal choice. EV mandates ignore personal needs and circumstances, such as long-distance driving, rural living, or lack of access to reliable charging infrastructure. Forcing everyone into electric cars assumes we all live in cities and have easy access to chargers. Not everyone’s situation is the same. A rural driver might find an ICE car more practical due to its longer range and quicker refueling, and they may resist mandates they perceive as disconnected from real-world needs. Electric cars often come with connected technology, such as GPS tracking and remote software updates, which can raise privacy concerns. Some individuals might dislike that EVs give governments and corporations more control over individual behavior through data collection or restrictions on vehicle use. Electric cars might be used to track where a person go and how a person drive. What if the government limits when or where a person can use a vehicle in the future? For some individuals there is fear of geofencing technologies that could restrict driving in certain areas or worry that governments could remotely disable vehicles during emergencies or noncompliance with future regulations. Government mandates can trigger a slippery slope, where individuals lose more freedom over their mobility. For example, if ICE cars are banned today, what stops future policies from limiting other personal freedoms, such as when and how often they can drive? Example: First, they tell you what car you can’t drive. Next, they might restrict how often you can drive or charge your vehicle. Mandates and subsidies for EVs is government interference in the free market, tilting the playing field in favor of one technology over another. If electric cars are truly superior, people will switch naturally. The government doesn’t need to bribe people to buy them or penalize those who don’t. I support environmental responsibility, but I prefer voluntary action over government mandates. An individuals should decide how to reduce their carbon footprint, rather than being forced into it by regulations. I care about the environment, but it’s my decision how to contribute, not the government’s job to force me into. Everything boils down to preserving personal choice in the face of increasing government mandates. While I may acknowledge the potential benefits of electric vehicles, I believe that the freedom to choose matters more than being forced into compliance with policies I didn’t consent to. If electric cars are better, people will naturally adopt them. Mandates are unnecessary and coercive. The government’s role should be to protect freedom and foster innovation, not dictate which technology we must use. Ultimately, true progress happens when individuals are free to choose, rather than being forced into conformity by top-down mandates.
@plonkster22 күн бұрын
@@Yurek_Vigo I'll repeat what I wrote earlier. Arguments from personal freedom assumes -- often without arguing for it -- that all personal choices are equally good. If it is true that we're slowly killing the planet we live on, then all choices are not equally good. Or in other words: Arguments for personal freedom often assume there is no reason to be concerned about the climate. If there is a reason to be concerned, then the stubborn naysayers may need some incentive. The good news is that this transition is going to take such a long time, that in most cases we can simply wait for the old vehicles and the old people to naturally disappear from the equation.

I don’t own an EV, but I’m open to the idea. I keep noticing people like Rogan, Trump, and others trying to hinder progress toward EVs and seizing on any news (whether fake or real) that supposedly supports their views.
